If I am in downtown Baton Rouge, Red Star is definitely on my list for a casual drink. It is one of the few low-key bars in the downtown area. The ambience is «divey» but not to the point of being dirty or grimey. The lighting is dark and with a red tent(thus the name– Red Star) which makes it a great place to chill with friends. There is a decent amount of seating(stools, booths, etc)., although I think it could use a bit more. The staff are friendly and quick. The drink prices are fabulous($ 2PBR’s and Tecates).

I like the reincarnation of this bar. I feel that the vibe is more laid-back and less pretentious

I’ve been going to Redstar for many years. Now that it’s under new management/ownership it’s better than ever. This joint was hipster waaaay before that was even a thing. The bartenders are cool and pretty quick and the drinks are cheap and strong. They have great daily specials and regular weekly events, like«Hipster Bingo.» It’s also become my favorite place to watch a Saints game. Every time I’ve gone they’ve had catered food for free or a food truck outside. The bottom line is that Redstar is an awesome place to hang pretty much any night, especially if you wanna be somewhere downtown where you can hear yourself think. Way to go new owners!!!

This is one of my favorite bars in Baton Rouge. It closed for a little while and then reopened under different management. Luckily, it’s exactly the same! It’s definitely a neighborhood bar with a dive feel without being dirty. The bartenders and clients are extremely friendly and willing to chat with strangers. The drink prices are the best in all of downtown. You can get a PBR or a Tecate for $ 2 or a drink with Louisiana bayou spiced rum(highly recommended) for $ 4. They usually have free food on Sundays for saints games. The look of this place is very unique when compared to other 3rd street bars. There is always interesting artwork on the walls and a lot of other random items hanging that give this place character. Five stars overall for friendly clientele, great drinks and prices, and character.

Awesome place, I’m from Austin, and it doesn’t get any more«Austin» than this in Baton Rouge.

When you leave your debit card, and live out of town, good luck getting them to answer the phone! I don’t think they even have one. Sucks

This is seriously one of the saddest bars I’ve ever been to(and I’ve been to Marksville). Empty bar, disrespectful bartenders, and unresponsive management. Stay away!

Went last night(9⁄6) for«Booty Work»…OMG! Hadn’t had this kind of fun in a looong time. Nice mixed crowd, good drinks/prices and a Great DJ, he played 90s Hiphop all night that kept the crowd dancing all night long! Will definitely return!

Let’s face it, Baton Rouge has few places that anyone would want to find themselves. This is one of the few reprieves from awful that one can find in Louisiana’s capital city. Nestled in what Baton Rougians seem to think is a downtown area and a few city blocks from the Mississippi river, the real estate is about as prime as Baton Rouge gets. It’s one of the few bars in Baton Rouge not constantly playing the greatest alt rock hits of 1999(for the record I do enjoy the greatest alt rock hits of 1999). It’s a bit classy to call a dive but it’s divey. If you happen to have the misfortune of being in BR, hit up this bar. It’s a fucking oasis. One of the only places in the whole city you’re not surrounded by dudes in ray bands wearing petrochemical and oil company polos and discussing investment opportunities or 19 year olds strapping feed bags of booze to their face and then vomitting cane’s fried chicken on each other. Pretty good drink specials, too!

Alright, so I’m a little late to the party… but I’m glad Free Taco Sunday opened my eyes to this sweet little place. It’s different than the other bars downtown, less fine china and more paper plate, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s more of a neighborhood joint than your City Bars or Blends of the world, with a much more accessible and laid back staff who just want you to relax and enjoy the awesome. AND, it’s smoke free which I absolutely positively LOVE. Go to Red Star to take advantage of some great drink specials, listen to some kick ass jukebox jams, enjoy a taco if the time is right, and get your neighborhood groove on.

As people have been saying, the Star is open again. I think they slapped a new coat of paint on, or not. No smoking inside but they cleaned up the back patio for you guys. Looks like some good specials on the chalk boards. I came for an Alex Harvie art show( definitely check this guy out. Really cool, really talented and he’ll do customs too), and I hope they continue putting on events like this. Haven’t been at night since reopen, but daytime art show with Otto on the 1’s and 2’s was definitely a good time.

Red Star is open again! It’s a bit different, but it still feels like Red Star. There are now TV’s and they will generally have either a game on or an old movie(the other night I was there they were playing an Akira Kurosawa film). They no longer allow smoking which some people aren’t exactly happy about, but other people probably greatly enjoy. They have a pretty decent beer selection and super cheap PBR. The bar staff is very nice and they are very quick. I haven’t really ordered any mixed drinks so I can’t speak to their quality, but I haven’t heard any complaints. Personally, I’m really glad to have Red Star back.

This place is sex on fire! The chillest bar I have been to in Baton Rouge. They have AWESOME drink specials, the bar tenders are cool, and nothing beats this place on a Wednesday night. Even before the crowds show up, this is a great place for an after-work drink. Well deserved five stars.

This is the BEST bar in baton rouge. Thanks to the skinny jeans, all 50 hipsters can easily squeeze up to the bar for an over priced high life. When I need a huge dose of self important casually ironic nonchalance, this is the spot!!!

Hipster heaven. You aren’t cool enough to be at this bar, why are you even here? I went to this bar every week for over a year and the door people and bartenders never stopped treating me like shit. Oh well I guess they taught me something: don’t expect jerks to treat you with anything less than jerkiness! Other than that, they have cool bands come through every now and then and it is one of the only places in BR to hear live indie music. I kept going for a reason, its a cool place frequently by cool people, just don’t expect for this to become your«Cheers». If you go, check out the back patio– it’s cute, skeezy and cozy all at the same time!

This was the afterparty for a major concert a few months back. Line was out the door!!! Luckily we got in b/c we had VIP tickets… haha suckers! Packed packed packed! Tables had the worst lighting coming from the side, so if you were to lean across the table, it’s not flattering to ANYONE over 27! I give this place three stars b/c some random guy yelled he loved me. HAHAHAHAHA… that’s funny!

I went to see a friend perform with his heavy metal band. The great thing about this place is that you could tell some folks just happened to be there(not for the band) but they totally got into the music… not just because it was great but because this seems like the type of place that draws customers with ecclectic tastes. I say this because there was one dude who looked like a morman totally rocking out and knew ALL the words to the metal covers which was quite surprising. They also had one superfan wearing 1996 era Gap jorts, a clean cut haircut, white sneakers, and white tube socks who also knew not only every cover but every ORIGINAL. Maybe I have lost touch with the metal scene and there is a new breed of fan out there but color me surprised is all I’m saying. The beer was cheap, the band kicked ass, and the crowd was great. I really want to check out their karaōke night which is supposed to be hilarious. All in all a really fun night out on the town… especially for a Tuesday.

Definitely a cool place if you end up in the business center of Baton Rouge, fun people cheap drinks hilarious locals singing 70′ and 80’s karaōke. Great nite out on our last leg in Louisiana. I even snagged an Abita beer mug. Thanks Red Star* O –check out Rasputin vodka, which has a good selection of vodka. The prices are a bit high but the space is really nice, too bad there isn’t more stuff happening in the area. At least the Hilton’s Tsunami has a great rooftop to smoke a cig and chill out a bit and gaze over the Port Allen bridge and the haunting Mississippi river. Go BR!
