I’m a traditional shaving hobbyist. I collect and use vintage and current safety razors and straight razors, and I’ve tried pretty much every shaving product you can name. Art of Shaving’s shave creams and shave soaps are fairly high quality, although you can find better quality products online for the same money or less. However, if you need a shaving related gift for a guy and need it right now, this is your place. Get the Lavender soap or the Ocean Kelp cream. Those are their best products. And that’s the ONLY reason you should go into an Art of Shaving store. Ever. Period. All of their other products– razors, shaving brushes, assorted shaving and grooming oils and lotions– are seriously, ABSURDLY overpriced. If you buy anything other than shaving cream or soap at AoS, you are getting absolutely HOSED. Don’t do it. You can get much better gear online at West Coast Shaving, Bullgoose Shaving, or even Amazon, for less money. As for the barber shop there: meh. They’re not allowed to use a real straight razor due to Louisiana law. So they use a shavette, which is a handle that holds a traditional razor blade that’s been snapped in half. Sure, the hot towels and such feel nice, but aside from that, you’re just getting a mediocre shave and paying $ 70 for it. That’s a big bucket of Nope in my book. So to recap, if you need an emergency man gift, buy some AoS cream or soap. Otherwise, be smarter with your money and avoid that place.

I decided to come here as I needed to get my beard trimmed for an interview. While I could have done it myself I felt that I needed it to be trimmed past my ability for the interview. I came to this place around 11:00AM on a Tuesday. Walking down the boulevard at the Mall I passed it up as it is rather small and easy to miss. When I walked in I immediately felt like I was in an old fashioned upscale Barber shop as I am sure is their intention. I asked if I could get a beard trim and luckily I got there just early enough that I would be done before their first appointment would arrive. The Art of Shaving is expensive. There is no way around that. I spent $ 35 on «The Perfect Shave» which included a beard trim and a straight edge razor shave. Whether or not you get your money’s worth depends on your perspective. In my personal opinion I found the service to be worth the money. The barber, Charles, was very friendly and did a great job. The Art of Shaving is a full service barber shop so they also do haircuts too. I would definitely recommend this place with the caveat that it is a very pricey service. Though it’s not a bad investment if you have an important event that you must look your best at, for example an interview, wedding, or first date. I definitely plan on going back.

Joshua Thibodeaux helped me pick out the items I needed. He was extremely knowledgeable and considerate of my needs by not over selling me anything. I was very happy there but they were busy and He could have used another salesperson to help him out. I would have given them a 5 star if one person more was there to help the additional customers that were waiting and we could have hotter more personal service, however with that said, Joshua was great.

Not bad, but pricey for a disposable shaver that I could do at home. I’ve been to similar places in Texas & New York where the straight razor is used for shaving. For $ 70 tip included, I got the royal treatment package, which last about an hour. This is what I paid in NY&TX for the same service but a REAL, not a disposable, straight razor was used. According to the barber that served me, LA law only allows disposable single razors to be used. It’s OK if you are going to a wedding or formal party. Appointments should be made if you want to make it worth your while.
