The food was mediocre, and the place was extremely filthy. The seats were worn out from years of use(you need to serious replace those seats). Also, the place smelled really bad… Like garbage sitting on a hot day! You’re probably better off eating a swansons microwaveable dinner than eating here.

The most authentic food in Beacon. I am always satisfied no matter what I order. Love the chicken and waffles, yams, and their breakfast options. If you have your doubts, your first bite of chicken will have you planning your next trip back.

If you have never been to BJ’s you need to know a few things. The prices are reasonable and the food is excellent, because it’s a family run business and Ms. Barbara knows that without the local community that has supported her over 35 year’s she would not be in business today. When you are dining at BJ’s it will be a little while before you food will be ready, but the fish, chicken, pork chops etc are not precooked and it’s a family run business so all you visitors that are looking for NYC service and atmosphere eat at one of the other high price restaurants on Main Street at don’t care about you or the community. But if want a home like feeling then BJ’s is the place for you. Thank you Ms. Barbara and family for making BJ’s Restaurant my second home… 35 year’s of LOVE THANKYOU

I love this place. Chicken and waffles are a little known gem to this town. You never know who is working here and who is just hanging out. It takes a while to get food. But it all adds to the lazy home kitchen feel of the place. Everyone just chats with each other and takes their time in here. The clientele obviously dates back decades. Cakes and pies are a must. Certain things like the chicken noodle soup are just straight campbells so you can avoid that.

Best fried chicken wings! Fried fish with hot sauce the bomb! Décor is not fancy, the wait can be a little long, but the food is comfort food goodness. I usually call ahead and wait a half hour before going. Great takeout joint.

Well I was here a few days ago but forgot to leave a review(oops). So here I am to drop some kind words in this soul food gem in Beacon. When my fiancé and her friend finished with crossfit they stopped here for a quick bite and I met them. When I first walked in I was automatically a little cautious because the place seemed a little out of date, but then I thought«hey its kind of charming and a nice getaway from the trendy norm of the new Beacon. The old guy at the counter really really made a great impression and added to the charm of the place. My girl ordered the oxtail with collard greens and yams and her friend ordered the baked chicken with collard greens and rice with red beans. The order took some time to come out but that wait was made enjoyable by the old guys stories and convo. Once the food came I was definitely impressed by the portions, enough for me and my girl to share. The oxtail was tender and really well cooked. The gravy was and awesome feature, the collard greens were great and the yams were pretty decent. I took a bite of our friends baked chicken and even though it was a little tiny bit dry it was seasoned perfect and was really really good. The rice was pretty good too. After the meal all three of us decided to treat ourselves and share some homemade sweet potato pie… whoa. Epic, amazing, perfect, heavenly… just to name a few words to describe it. For the two meals it came out to around 25 bucks which reallynwas great just based off the portions. We left with a warm smile and advice that if we are ever in a rush just give a call and it’ll be ready whether for taken out or eat in. Most definitely going to visit again on my next cheat day. Happy Munching

So I just noticed that I never really fully reviewed this place. And I was really unhappy with it. So i had to come back and tell my story. I was in town for an early morning appointment and wanted to have breakfast after that meeting. I looked here on Unilocal for a near by place to sit down and have a quick meal. There’s a bunch on this street, but I felt the need to go with the more ethnic feel meaning«The down south» feel of the name and type of cuisine they serve. I was the only one when I walked in, it was earlyish like 9. Walked to the kitchen to place my order with the only person there. It felt different than any experience I had because it’s a good size place, and there was no one there except the cook. I ordered a corn beef hash breakfast a coffee and a bottle of apple juice. After which I received a bill for $ 15.80 I was stupefied by the bill which I then asked the cook, how can it be so expensive for canned beef, oily, under cooked, «home fries» and 2 eggs. She then went to the register to ring it up only to find I was being over charged a $ 1.25. Maybe I’m just venting but that was the most expensive worst breakfast I’ve ever had. Reason for the one star.

Best food that we’ve had in Beacon. We got oxtail with gravy(awesome) and fried chicken breast(great, but we think you should get leg/thigh for a juicier experience). Collard greens and cabbage were meh, but the cornbread was AMAZING and the Mac and cheese was delicious(a little on the overdone side). Sweet potato pie was sweeter than I usually like, but hey, it was still delicious. WE’LLBEBACK!

This was the first time I have eaten at a restaurant that would be considered soul food and I believe it has spoiled me. The ribs were definitely in my top five ever and my husband said the fried chicken was great. The sides were good and not skimpy like in some places. Usually I don’t care for Mac and cheese but here it was really good. And good prices. Will definitely be back.

Had a massive dinner party last weekend and ordered enough fried chicken from BJ’s to feed 60 people(that’s truly how many people were at this party.) Barbara, the owner, worked with me on figuring out which cuts & wings to choose in order to maximize my order and was just super helpful overall. Showed up to the party with the fried chicken and it disappeared within 15 minutes… people freaked for it and were clamoring for more. Bottomline: BJ’s is the real deal.

If I lived in Beacon, I’d be here every week. The service here is so friendly and nice, and while it does take a while to get your meal, you can bet that everything was freshly made to order. We came for dinner and breakfast the next day. For dinner, the fried chicken was tender and crispy. The collard greens and mac + cheese were delicious too. The chicken soup was no cop-out, it was dense, creamy, and perfect for my sore throat. Plus, it came with a hunk of the BEST corn bread I’ve ever had. Breakfast grits came with a pat of melted butter on top, plus I got the corned beef hash and 2 eggs over easy. FYI, I thought the corn bread was better than the biscuit. Oh my my my, words can’t express how good that corn bread is. We even bought back some corn bread muffins to take back to NYC! Like all the best meals, food at BJ’s is so simple and so good. It was my favorite restaurant after visiting Poppy’s, Max’s on Main, & Homespun Foods.

The whiting fish and grits is a really good choice you get 3 big pieces of fish and bread you really leave full so your definitely getting your money’s worth. The shortribs, oxtails, collard greans are all seasoned to perfection. This little joint in Beacon has amazingly delicious food! Barbara&Brenda are amazing mother and daughter cooks. So whenever your in the mood for some delicious southern cuisine head on down to BJ’s in Beacon, you won’t be disappointed.

As a man from the South living in New York I have never found a good biscuit in the state. All that changed when I found BJ’s. This place is as legit as it gets. I had the chicken and waffles, it was great. The biscuits were a slice of back home. I will be a regular here.

The ribs were great but the service took forever. The servers were nice but in the future I think I will call in my order and pick it up.

When we were planning for our wedding in Beacon, we needed to find a good catering option for a rehearsal dinner picnic on the 4th of July. We had chosen an Italian restaurant that was difficult to work with. At the last minute I had a thought to check out what else was in the area. BBQ was an obvious choice for a good 4th of July picnic food, so I tried calling BJ’s. Brenda answered the phone, and from the first minute talking to her I knew this was the place. She said«We’re gonna make this easy». She gave me three choices of meats and two sides, plus cornbread for a VERY reasonable price per head. We were ordering for 60 guests and she even had me knock the order down to 50 cause it would be «plenty of food» — she obviously could have made more money on the order if she had encouraged me to over-order, but she didn’t! The food was AMAZING. Best fried catfish I’ve ever had, amazing fried chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, collard greens and cornbread. All SUPERB, delicious, travelled well and was ready on time. We literally got dozens of compliments from the guests at the rehearsal dinner picnic, everyone loved it! There was plenty of food for everybody, but not TOO much. The best part is, through the course of the weekend it ALL got eaten — we were finishing the collard greens with brunch on Sunday! Brenda wanted me to let her know how everything was… So as soon as I finish this review I’m gonna give her a call!

Our first time there and we were really charmed by the friendliness of the proprietor and the waitstaff. When we arrived, there was one booth available at the back next to the kitchen, and when booths up front opened up, the waitstaff asked if we wanted to move to one of them which was a pretty cool thing to do. Since it was our first time, I thought we’d try the fried chicken and fried fish, both tasty and battered fried well. I must have«soul» in my soul — I ate my entire side of collard greens, including my partner’s, who is not as into greens. It was the perfect comfort food. My fried chicken came 3 pieces to a plate(your choice of white/dark meat), with side of greens, and rice/gravy($ 9.99) I packed my chicken to bring home to my kid and he commented on how tasty it was, even upon reheating. Most of their customers are local residents and that makes for that down home feeling. The best way to describe it is the feeling you got when you were a child and your grandad brought you to hang out with his buddies at his favorite coffee counter. It was just pretty darn cool to hang with the regulars. I would love to go back and try their oxtails next time, for sure.

I was in Beacon for wedding and decided to stop at BJ’s for lunch after reading all of the excellent(but not deserved) Unilocal reviews. First of all, walk in the door, and you are transported to a diner straight out of 1976. This could be overlooked and even considered charming if the food had lived up to expectations. I ordered the chicken and waffles. About 5 minutes after placing my order, the waiter came back to the table and informed me that my chicken would be chicken wings, as they were apparently out of any other chicken parts. I didn’t want chicken wings, but when I told him that, I was told that they had already been thrown into the fryer. Oh, my apologies, I guess I’ll just eat them, then… which is exactly what I did. The waffle was nothing to write home about, either, and it was served with Aunt Jemima maple flavored syrup. Ew. Overall, despite my failed chicken and waffles, the other food was good enough(not memorable enough for me to remember what it was for the purpose of this review) but heavy. If you’re looking for a light lunch, this is not your spot in Beacon.

Great food and not that expensive. Wait for food was long but worth it. Chopped bbq was amazing!
