Run with Paula Events

I recently did the Helvetia Half Marathon (my first ever) organized by Run with Paula. This was an incredible experience for me. I cried at the start line then again at the finish line… tears of joy! The excitement of 4,000 people lined up and ready to begin, the count down, runners start to bounce up and down with excitement, then the rush and smiles of all these beautiful people was overwhelmingly moving. The course was a collection of soft rolling hills and farm land, all well stocked with porta potties and refreshments. Crossing the finish line had me crying again — I was greeted by friends and a gaggle of «Soul Sisters» who gave me a shout out as I crossed the finish line with my name announced over loud speakers in the stadium. I felt like a rock star… I’m hooked and can’t wait for the next one. Thank you Run with Paula for a great event. Thank you friend Shannon for getting me into this. Thank you Soul Sisters for your consistent training tips and encouragement.

My favorite running event since I’ve attempted to become a runner was the Helvetia Half Marathon. It is a Run with Paula race and they did an amazing job putting together a fun and challenging event.
Paula Harkin is co-​owner of Portland Running Company and in the interest of full disclosure lived about two blocks from me in Tualatin before we moved last fall, but I never met her. I also have a co-​worker who goes to her for personal coaching and raves about her.
They have five or six events a year and several are focused on women — Hippie Chick Half Marathon and Run Like a Girl. Most of the events feature longer distances, so these aren’t your casual 5ks. The events get a lot of awards for best race in the area and some of them sell out well in advance of race day.
What makes a good race in my view is an interesting course, good facilities, lots of support while racing and then a cool after-​party. Oh, and did I mention free stuff — I really love samples.
Last year the half marathon was fun (didn’t think that was possible) and probably the greatest feeling of personal achievement during my brief running career was finishing the race in Hillsboro Stadium (damn that artificial turf felt good after pounding the pavement) with the crowds cheering.
Along the way there were many aid stations with snacks and drinks to keep you refreshed and many great sponsors so there was a lot to see and do before and after the race.
