Good spot, definitely a very cool vibe. The food and the décor are both great, if on the small side… The portions could stand to be a bit bigger, its pretty hard to leave here full although everything you eat is so tasty, and we know that’s owing to the cost of high quality ingredients. The space too is very nice but feels a bit too cramped… for a place that’s billed as a date spot there’s not many tables, but if we had been there at a less crowded time I don’t think I’d have minded. Worth checking out, we will probably go again.

The restaurant is tiny but feels like you are in someone’s home. And the wait staff is really friendly. The food and drinks are amazing! Great date spot.

I live around the corner from this spot and love Mexican food. Have been several times! The food is great and its«cute» as everyone has already commented. However… the hipster service is terrible has caused me to decide not to recommend this place or ever go back. Item(s) to improve: –The waitress working there barely says a word to anyone who walks in and leaves them standing at the front door for a few minutes. Thumbs down. –The same waitress was cuddling/kissing on her boyfriend while customers are waiting for service. Unless these Two own the place, I can let it slide. …actually no, they looked ridiculous while everyone was twiddling their thumbs waiting for decent service. Would give another thumbs down, but too busy twiddling them. –When given large bills to pay the check… don’t ever ask if the customer needs change. The customer will tell you if «no change is needed.» Inexperienced-waitress-girl, next time just bring the change and say thank you for waiting.

This is one of my favorite local restaurants. So far I’ve been twice with friend-dates. Both times I had the Mexcalita, which I was pleased to notice was still on happy hour even though it was a Sunday. The Mexcalita is delicious! Habanero rim, a savory contrast with the slightly sweet-sour cocktail. The first time I came, I waited for my friend at the cozy bar and enjoyed a peppery Mexcal. I love that this place has a range of Mexcal; it reminds me of my favorite haunt in Mexico City. For food, I’ve had the guacamole and chips to start twice. The second time wasn’t really salted, but still tasty. I’ve only sampled their delicious tacos. My favorite is the shrimp taco. Oh my word! So good! I also like the pork taco with fresh pineapple and onions. So good! Pretty much everything I’ve had there has been delicious. Each time I’ve gone, I visualize myself returning solo for a tasty, chill happy hour. The atmosphere is definitely quaint. This place is tiny, but just right. The lighting is dark; candlelit only, it seems. Calaca is perfect for a date, or dinner with a few friends.

The best dinner experience I have had in the entire year. Went for a dinner with my best friend in from Scotland and from the time I stepped in, I fell in love. The votive basilica candles next to the white flower buds in mason jar buds. The tiny bar. This place is small with big heart, huge character and major flavor. The cocktails look amazing!!! Love that they only do Tequila and Mezcal– FINE tequilas and Mezcal for the artist’s buck! The Rabbiteye cocktail was beautiful, refreshing and made with damn good Mezcal! The chef is supremely talented. I LOVE their food!!! I want to try everything. And he seemed like a sweetie when I met him at the bar! We started with the grande guac and chips-as an avocado lover, it was a YES. We had our lives changed with the Queso Fundido prepared with soyrizo, which I appreciate since I don’t eat red meat or poultry. Huge flavor! Amazing presentation, you assemble it yourself and it does not disappoint in the slightest. I had the Atun Tostada prepared with sour orange juice, avocado and chipotle sauce, which is perfect with that clean tuna flavor, perfectly diced. Also had the Gobenador and Pescado taco. PHENOMENAL. Everything is amazing and the Gobernador is just a cheesy, shrimpy, crispy, flavorful piece of heaven okay!!! Viva Calaca! I will be back soon!

Calaca is cute inside, has great food, and delicious cocktails. It’s a great spot for a date or a casual dinner with friends. Just make sure you bring cash since they don’t accept cards.

I can’t actually say whether the cocktails or the food are better at Calaca. My husband and I go in and barely look at the menu anymore — the Linnies are just so breathtakingly superb that we can’t bring ourselves to order anything else(even though it’s all pretty amazing!). The food is fantastically fresh(try, for instance, the Atun Tostada), and every time we try something new, it’s better than the last thing we tried. The food is so good that you won’t be able to stop yourself from gasping when you first taste it. A Calaca day is a great day in our house.

First off, I love the food here. The tostada sampler and the few tacos I tried were all tasty with well-balanced flavors. The aguachile which I’d never experienced was zesty and delicious. Nothing but praise for the food and the service is generally good. Why 4 stars? Oddly, the music. They sometimes pump tunes that sound like Mexican Rage Against The Machine. Just super intense and a few dbs too loud for a small, candlelit spot(with otherwise great ambiance). And I love me some heavy jams — just not while I’m eating. Other times it’s been fine. Want to go 5 stars but bringing a date here is a bit of a dice roll so I have to knock one off.

THEIRTOSTADASSAMPLERISSOGOOD. I thought the raw tuna was the best but my boyfriend said the shrimp ceviche one was better. You have to get the Elote(cornnnnn)!!! I didn’t like how close we were to the other tables(it’s a small restaurant) and the waiter wasn’t that nice.

+++ — Gobernador is best ++ — If your a tequila lover, this is your place — Pescado is good, it doesn’t taste fishy, the ingredients are very complimentary + — Wonderful service and suggestions from the owner — Carnitas is aight — Chips and guac were good TIPS: — The wife and I split two tacos and one quessadilla, and we were a little bit more than satiated (We did get our filling of chips and guac tho)

Instagram-as-tacqueria Calaca is a teeny, tiny indoor patio with all the #masonjars #succulents and #rusticaccents befitting The Bed-Sty Of The Now. «Service» seems like an aggressive word for what feels more like someone cooking you dinner in their home, and«menu» feels too formal a designation for the handful of artisanal-looking offerings of which you’ll need at least 3 to comprise a meal. It’s not cheap — one taco costs $ 4(and is consumed in about 4 bites) — but it’s carefully prepared, quite tasty, and pretty. This sort of spot tends to be polarizing, so if your appetite and your aesthetic preferences are staunchly in the quality over quantity camp, I’d recommend. If you could care less about pretty potted plants, and more about bang for your buck, head elsewhere.

I’ve been here three times during the day and have always found a place to sit. It is small but it adds to the character of the restaurant. I’ve yet to eat anything here that I did not immediately want to eat again. The menu has its staples that are great but the owner changes it up with the specials which should be taken full advantage of. A couple of shots of tequila with a late lunch at La Calaca is a perfect way to end an afternoon.

I don’t want to write an honest review because I want to keep this gem hidden. First things first, the food is so fresh and popping with flavor. Perfectly executed and delicious. The music, the décor, and the service make it feel like a little oasis. When you walk in the rest of the world is shut out and you are transported to a dream land as though through a magic portal. Can’t recommend it highly enough, but be warned it is small and popular so it can get busy.

Such amazing food, and a really un pretentious feel inside. I had the Tostada sampler which included Tuna Tartar(Atun), Chiviche, and achiote pork. My wife had a Quesadilla with braised shrimp and she informed me it was the best she’s ever had. The interior is super tasteful and the art on the walls rules. We didn’t have any drinks, but they also looked amazing. I think i counted at least 3 different kinds of Mescal. Right on!

First let me say that we came in around 4 so we were the only guests in the restaurant. We ordered the guacamole, elote(corn), tostada sampler, and mahi mahi tacos. Food was below average and wildly overpriced. The guacamole serving size was about a larger coffee mug size for 9.5 served with a small side of oily thick cut chips. Both were bland and forgettable. The tostada sampler included 3 tostadas-each about the size of a hockey puck-for $ 16. Again, nothing remarkable. All the portions were skimpy. Service was SOSLOW. Especially given we were the only table in the restaurant. The employees seemed more concerned with arranging the décor than providing customer service. We received our dishes one at a time and although we finished dishes before beginning others, none of our plates were cleared the whole meal. 2 stars for the cute atmosphere and pretty presentation. No points for the taste, quality for price, or service. Their focus needs to be less about appearance and more towards food quality and good service.

Gee it’s so tiny in here! I thought we had walked into a lobby/coat check area of sorts but nope, this was it. About 2, 3 benches and tables, with the odd chair here and there and about 5 stools at the bar. Whatever you may think they lack in size, they sure do make up with taste and charm. Calaca, please don’t change a thing… NOTHING! You’re awesome!!! I didn’t actually have a meal except I tried the shrimp quesadilla off my friend’s plate(yeah I know you men hate that) and then decided I had to get a portion! Margaritas were slamming!(Arremm that means it was great). The atmosphere was very cordial from the friendly(really young looking bartended, I thought surely she’s no more than 18), to fellow diners. I plan to revisit for a full meal and then maybe, just maybe, this could become(I’m sure it will!) my mehican(pardon my pronunciation) spot. The End(for now)

I was impressed by the quality, the flavor and the presentation of the food. This seemed like a great little spot for a date assuming they have procured a liquor license(they had not when I visited a few months ago). The pricing is affordable although just slightly too high given the portions. I enjoyed the décor and the atmosphere of the place the most – it was giving a Day of the Dead vibe around the end of October/early November that was executed well.
