I took my first flying lesson last week and I’m still flying high. I bought a Travelzoo deal for a discovery flight ($ 89, usually $ 150ish) back in the spring of 2013, and tried all summer to schedule something, but nothing worked out. The people were very friendly, but their hours were limited.
Fast forward to this summer: I’m going through my old deals and found this one, so I decided to call and ask for a refund, since my deal had expired and I didn’t think I had time to try this anyway. The person who answered the phones was really nice and in addition to offering me my money back, she tried to find me something that could work, even when I told her I was only free one specific afternoon. Lo and behold, they had an opening! (We ended up pushing it back one week for bad weather.)
I finally had my lesson with Rob on a cloud-​free Saturday, and it was absolutely life-​changing. He was so friendly and patient when it came to showing me the ropes, and I got to actually FLY THE PLANE. I never thought it would be so easy or that I would get this kind of chance on my first time out, but he was sure to give me as much hands-​on experience as I felt comfortable with. It was incredible. We flew out to Hampton Beach (he said we could go anywhere we could get there and back from in 30 mins, which is a pretty broad range!). Just the vision of heading off over the ocean, then turning back and using Mt Washington as my guidepost — it was amazing.
I thought that this would be my only flying lesson, just a cool story to tell at parties, but now I’m seriously reconsidering and might actually try to get a license over the next few years.

This is the premier flight school in New England. EFA students learn in beautifully maintained aircraft. Instructors are top flight and are mentored by world class aerobatic champion Mike Goulian and two ex-​military pilots, Marc Nathanson and Ed Keins. The school offers a wide variety of training aircraft, including several with the G1000 avionics suite. Advanced ratings and aerobatic training are also very well regarded at this school.
The school is based at the L.G. Hanscom Field, KBED, and this provides the ideal learning environment. As a Class D airfield, it is tower controlled and provides new students with all of the knowledge and confidence to fly into any airport.
Flight training is expensive at any school. Make sure that your investment pays off with your Pilot’s Certificate! EFA will make it happen.

I got my multi-​engine/​commercial ratings at EFA. Between half-​dozen flight schools I’ve flown with, EFA is definitely the top notch. My instructor was Tony C. and it’s hard to recommend him enough, his teaching style is amazing, his knowledge is outstanding, and flying skills are impressive. He didn’t just prepare me for the checkride but also taught me some fine flying techniques. I’ve also taken couple checkrides (tailwheel checkout and multi-​engine FAA practical test) with Marc N. and it was always great flying and a learning experience as well.
EFA is one of the few schools offering aerobatic and unusual attitude training programs. I’ve only flown their Super Decathlon (I believe they also have Extra 300 certified in aerobatic category), the plane is in great condition and very well maintained. Aerobatic and tailwheel instruction quality exceeded my expectations.
The school is well organized, dispatchers and line service is always there and always helpful. Sometimes scheduling can be a challenge, even on weekdays planes schedules fill up quickly so it’s best to reserve flights 2 – 3 weeks in advance. Rental and instruction rates are rather high, somewhat higher than in other parts of the country, but comparable to those of other schools in New England.
One thing that could be improved is planes availability. They only have one complex aircraft, and one twin. So if the aircraft is grounded for maintenance, it can be a while before you can fly it again. It happened couple times during my training there and it was frustrating. It may be less of a problem for primary flight training, since they also have several Skyhawks, but I’ve never flown any of those so can’t comment on condition/​mx.

I had never had the opportunity to fly in a «small» plane before and the idea appealed to me. Executive flyers was one of the few places that offered a discovery flight option. The staff were very helpful in answering all my questions and helped me fill out the paperwork before the flight. My instructor for the flight; Ryan was very knowledgable and clearly explained what he was doing every step of the way (i.e pre-​flight check, controls etc). He even coached me through taxing on the runway and let me do it myself! It was a clear day so the view that we had from the air was spectacular and even though being in a small plane is a little scary, it was a fun experience. Landing was the only bumpy part of the ride but Ryan walked me through that every step of the way too. In short, if you are interested in flying or earning your private pilot license go to Executive flyers. All the instructors I met while touring the facility were extremely polite, friendly and happy to share their knowledge. Their planes are well maintained and they actually take you up in the air for the full hour of the discovery flight as opposed to other places that include the pre-​flight instruction time in your hour long discovery lesson.

I mostly fly helicopters across the hall with East Coast Aero Club, but I have taken a few checkrides with Executive Marc Nathanson and he is a great teacher. The airplanes at Executive are well-​maintained and overall the school is far above the U.S. average.

I’ve visited several flight schools in the area and those guys are top notch. There were several cheaper options in the area (by 10%) but that meant less access to instructors and airplanes. EFA has 10+ instructors, mostly full time, and a variety of equipment to choose from (including glass cockpits). My instructor is a full timer, meaning scheduling wise he’s pretty much always available. Whoot Whoot to that
