Zees Computer Services is an informal, two-​man business that resembles a garage operation in a small commercial unit off the beaten path in Bellflower, CA. They do not have a presence on a busy street.
I found Zees on Craigslist in order to repair an Apple iMac. It took a number of email messages thru Craigslist to obtain the location of the business and hours of operation.
The owner said they offered free problem diagnosis. I dropped off the unit expecting to get a call on the cost of repair. The next day, I received a text message indicating a ‘discounted’ repair cost of $ 180 without a diagnosis.
The iMac tech gave a short demo to show a system disk of 250GB which was MUCH smaller than the original 1TB disk drive. I told them they needed to install a larger replacement drive even though the iMac tech tried to discourage me from installing anything larger than 500GB. They said they would install a 604GB drive for an extra $ 20.
I reluctantly paid the $ 20 and took the repaired system home only to find they had installed a smaller used 500GB drive.
In order to guarantee the condition of the replacement drive, I purchased a NEW 1TB drive for $ 40 from MicroCenter in Tustin. I took the new drive and the iMac back to Zees for the final repair.
The iMac tech completed the repair and returned $ 20 back to me even though they never installed a different drive. Rather than press for more money, I took the system with the old 1TB drive and went home.
As a test, I took the old 1TB drive, reformatted it and installed it on one of my personal computers. It only had two bad sectors. The old drive has performed well over the last week with no errors.
So the question arises. Why didn’t they reformat the original drive? Instead they replaced it with a smaller used drive with an estimated value of $ 15 – 20 and charged me $ 180 for less than 1 hr of labor? Bear in mind, they NEVER told me the old drive was bad.
You can form your own opinion of this business. However, I can not recommend them based upon my experience. BTW, this is a Cash ONLY business. That should be a Red Flag.
