This place is really such a treat. I love sushi and I was unsure about the top mark ratings. I was completely thrilled at how good the sushi really was. I got blue fin sushi, blue fin Toro, salmon, and big eye Toro. All deserve top marks. Bravo

Service friendly but a little unprofessional when I asked for gluten-free soy also I ordered spicy salmon rolls and they made them with ground salmon which I have never seen before in any of my sushi experiences and it was not good it should be whole pieces of salmon so that was very disappointing.

Gen Sushi is one of those places that will surprise you, in one way or another. First, it’s located in Belmont in a location that doesn’t have many other restaurants. It is on Concord, which is a very busy street, but parking is still really easy to find. When you walk into the restaurant, it’s surprising how small it is. There are only two 4-person tables and one 2-person table. Then there is a sushi bar that can seat maybe 5 – 6 people. The lack of seating does explain why during our meal, there seemed to be many take-out orders being picked up. It’s a very cozy environment and the staff is extremely friendly. It almost feels like you’re eating in someone’s dining room. I came here with my parents and my son, and despite their small space, they had a high-chair available for my son to sit in. The menu itself is fairly simple. It’s a fairly simple menu so it’s easy to make a choice. We ordered a Chirashi, the Sashimi Dinner, a couple rolls and a few appetizers. It was definitely some of the freshest sushi and sashimi that I’ve had in Boston. I was really impressed with the quality. The Chirashi came with Uni(sea urchin) also, which was awesome. I’d recently become a fan of uni, and it added a really nice touch to the entire Chirashi. The sashimi dinner had HUGE pieces of sashimi. I guess I must be used to restaurants skimping on what they give you in the name of cost cutting. But the pieces were not only big, but super tasty too. Speaking of price, that’s probably the only thing that may be negative. They’ve definitely priced in the premium quality of the food here. As a point of comparison, we had a gigantic meal the night before at an izakaya place and the bill at Gen ended up being higher. I enjoyed the meal at Gen more though — so that take for what it is. I’ll definitely be back, just not as often as I’d like depending on my budget!

I can’t believe the good reviews this place has. The sushi was terrible, overpriced, super small rolls, not even tight, falling apart! Terrible sushi and way overpriced! Only 2 tables, terrible service! We waited for 20 min to have our order taken and we were the only ones there, incredible! My home made sushi is of a better quality. May be I am just used to better quality sushi, coming from CA and NY. I wouldn’t go back!

I’m a big fan of the teka maki with large prices of tuna(not all diced/minced at some other places), they also have very tasteful maki rolls

Im baffled by the location: such a good place, but its in the middle of nowhere, part of a tiny town? I judge a sushi place by its uni, and the uni here was AMAZING. They also have the best toro Ive ever had. And Ive never seen any place in Boston proudly serve natto with ika(squid) like this. Amazing through and through. I know people like to eat maki when they go to sushi but please do yourself a favor and order nigiri or sashimi, and their many interesting appetizers as well.

We have been highly dissatisfied with the rolls. The rolls were the smallest we’d ever seen, one cannot physically make them eny smaller. The rice layer was thinner than one rice grain, and, as if short of nori, the cook did not roll it all the way around. The rolls were disfigured and falling apart when taken out of the tiny box(two rolls per box!)

Absolutely delicious and a very friendly chef. Ask for mango to be added to your sushi. You won’t regret it!

Best quality sushi and maki in Cambridge/Belmont. This place is a find in terms of food quality. I totally recommend. It’s better to choose take out as the place is very small. If you decide to eat there you have to bring your own wine, which makes it very cost effective ;)

The best sushi in Boston is in Belmont! Gen is a former Nobu chef, and he brings his extraordinary culinary prowess to Boston. Gen Restaurant is a BYOB Japanese place, where the laudably resourceful meal(White toro, yellowtail jalapeño, Uni, old-school(as well as new age) sushi plates more than makes up for the cozy and intimate footprint. It’s the kind of place where you can rely on the chef to keep send you food until you throw in the towel. Every plate manages to exceed the expectations set by the previous one. You will not be disappointed, and will likely find yourself coming back here repeatedly. For a few years now, whenever we think of Japanese food, Gen is at the top of our short list.

We did a take out of gyozas, edamame, sashimi & sushi for a party of 30 or so, young & hungry grad students(mostly) yesterday, and universally found it to be excellent. Freshness, taste & quality were outstanding, for a take out & quantity of this size. We are veteran sushi eaters with 25 years of sushi dining under our belts — including many meals with secret masters in Japan. We had also brought in 6 freshly made pizzas from Flat Breads(& we all know how good those are) — end of the day, guess what was left — 4 pizzas & about 4 pieces of sushi. We often bring home sushi from this little place, have to say that they outdid themselves for our guests.

My PhD advisor ordered a bunch of sushi and other food for delivery from Gen for a party after my thesis defense. The presentation was surprisingly good. The non-sushi food included edamame and gyoza and it was still warm. The sushi was fresh and delicious. I have not gotten sushi for delivery very many times but this is definitely the best sushi I’ve had delivered so far!

So good! Quality, freshness, presentation and service were all top notch. We got there right when they opened with our own bottle of white wine and had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Seaweed salad and tuna taco to start. Both were amazing. Also had the snow roll, triple spicy roll, salmon nigari and another roll(I can’t remember the name) that had big pieces of cooked salmon in it. They were all great. This is now my go-to sushi place. Can’t wait to return.

Small place but really good sushi. Three of us came here for dinner and surprised to find this place empty at 7.30pm. Seated right away, ordered and served our food very fast. Had the sushi dinner, sashimi dinner, una-ju and caterpillar roll. All really fresh and tasty. They put dots of sriracha on slices of octopus — very surprisingly delicious! A little on the pricey side but worth it as a special treat.

Small hidden gem. Fresh fresh fresh. Tuna taco, miso soup, shumai excellent starters. I saw their salads but not had them, they look great. If it’s your first time here get triple spicy roll it is with shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy may(secret recipe) and some other stuff. I’ll keep adding here if possible, I gonna come here for more sushi.

I am somewhat of a sushi addict, and have eaten at all of the big name sushi restaurants in the Boston area, along with many good smaller and less well known restaurants. I always come back to Gen Sushi. Because honestly, their sushi is out of this world! I honestly think this is the best sushi in the Boston area. After eating at Gen Sushi many times, the Tuna Lovers roll(on their special roll list) is still my favorite roll that I’ve ever had. Their spicy shrimp mango roll and white tuna tempura roll are also fabulous, and though these rolls can be found in their maki section and on their lunch special list, they are somewhat of a splash out from the typical basic maki list that you will find at any other sushi restaurant. Additionally, I have noticed that the sushi chef does something slightly different with his rice, that sets it apart from other sushi restaurants. It always has a great, yet mild flavor and a perfect texture that compliments the fish and the chef’s creations. Anyway, I could go on, but not much more needs to be said. You are doing yourself a disservice if you have not yet treated yourself to a meal at Gen Sushi.

Picked up some food for a Wednesday night in. Food was on time and correct, which was quite nice. Shared all the food w my girlfriend. We started w seaweed salads and avocado salads. Both were good, no complaints. Ginger dressing was light and tasty. We then moved onto the tuna tacos, black dragon maki, and spicy tuna maki. Tacos were quite good, with thick fried shells and a tasty raw tuna/avocado mix. The maki were both quite tasty. Good sushi. Overall quite a solid sushi place. Prices were reasonable. Good times
