What do YOU think of when you hear the words ‘art studio’? A classroom full of students painting ‘happy trees’ with water colors? Students using charcoals to make drawings of Adonis — or it is Charlie Sheen — I forget. Either way, both of those are WRONG plaster-breath! For me, The Rave Building is what I think of when someone says art studio. This place would fit right in… whether in a loft in Deep Ellum or way out in Marfa… or anywhere in between. Rave features probably my 2 fav types of artistic media that inspire me… photography and metal working. More specifically, they feature large metal architectural pieces(aka Edom Ranch Art) and photography by Craig and Jan Blackmon. In addition, they carry some fine jewely(aka Studio Metals) by artisan Dyan Johnson that you should check out if that is your thing. True to the style of Ben Wheeler, the Rave Building is repurposed from the old N&B Feed Store in downtown BW. However, of all the buildings, this one is BYFAR exhibits the most updated and retro look AND feel — both inside and out! The colorful exterior features a vintage Rave sign with orbit finials brightly adorning each side of the façade, and large pane windows that lend to the open, airy and spacious feel. This combination invites you to come in and to take your time to browse leisurely. The set up allows you to pause and think about/enjoy each concept, the vision, and the execution of each and every piece. With both the building and its contents, Rave delivers as BOTH an art gallery and a shop… and it is worth the Stop!
