This is the best used book store in Bend. Great selections, well organized, antique and collectible, reasonable prices, and a friendly staff.

With as many people as we see come and go from The Open Book when we are there, my hubby and I can’t believe it has yet to be reviewed on Unilocal. So here goes. This little used book store is in a great location on Greenwood Avenue, not far from downtown, and as convenient to east side used book buyers as those on the west side. That it has a parking lot associated, avoiding on street parking, is also a plus.(For those interested, one of the stalls in the lot is wheelchair accessible as is the store entry itself.) The store is brightly lit, kept well stocked and in just enough order that you can find things pretty easily if you’re on a «hunt» but not so orderly that you can’t browse and enjoy the delights of unexpected discoveries if you are on a «gather». A tip is that it seems to always have a good selection of cookbooks, some unique and some more popular releases, for those inclined to like to read cookbooks like novels and experiment with and recycle them.(Ask me how I know this. :-)) Prices are good too. My purchase today was a hardcover book that I’ve had on my «to read» list since it was published a year or so ago; dust jacket full retail price(not that anyone ever pays that) would have been $ 25. I purchased the book for $ 7 but with the store credit I had it cost me only $ 3.50. Store credit is accumulated when one sells books to The Open Book. The owner, or his sales assistant, will offer you store credit or cash payment. Store credit clocks in just a bit higher than the cash payment if you take the latter. As example, on the three hardcover books he purchased from me today, I was offered $ 10 store credit or $ 7 cash. So it’s not the money one makes by selling your books to The Open Book owner which he adds to his inventory.(He doesn’t buy all books… and in fact is pretty selective.) The fun is in the recycling of the books to other readers and supporting the business of the guy in the middle who has put it all together so well. Which results in a convenient source and a good selection of used books for you to buy and read! And if you have store credit, you can use it for half of he purchase price of the book(s). Good deal. Oh yes, a good selection of used books on DVD as well. Always a good stop for us before a road trip when we’re looking for one of those. And a nice selection of CD’s.
