The Workhouse, like its surrounding stores in the same post-industrial hipster complex, is a little hard to understand for those accustomed to traditional retail environments. It is more like the physical embodiment of a tiny piece of Etsy than a conventional store. From what I can tell, it’s an artist’s cooperative where individual artisans set up a combined studio/gallery/retail space. The selection varies based upon the whims of whoever happens to be there at the time. I have seen soaps, candles, ceramics of all kinds, jewelry made from recycled materials, leather bound notebooks, letterpress cards, hand-painted cards, and a variety of fabrics and textiles. You never know what you’re going to find here. It is very eclectic and random, and a bit chaotically-organized and dimly-lit. Fun to explore, with a slightly odd vibe.

Every time I’m in Bend, I pop in to see what’s new — and it’s usually a highlight. Though the wares can be a bit pricey, they have a lot of heart. Totally worth it. Not only is the environment inspiring — what’s better than seeing the artists’ spaces as you shop? — but there’s a ton of variety. If you’re looking for a gift, you have a lot to choose from Speaking of gifts, my favorite day to shop at The Workhouse is Small Business Saturday. A lot of the artists offer up items for $ 10, so you can make out like a bandit with great holiday gifts.

What an amazing, eclectic gallery for gorgeous local art! Everything from hand-made dresses, to cutely designed journals, to hand-made jewelry. This place is amazing! Treasures everywhere. Very high-quality. And a wonderful place to get gifts. I went there for a class and was sublimely surprised by what I found! It’s right next to Sparrow bakery. It seems like amazing places gather together.

I’m there most every week; the selection is always being refreshed. If there’s no seating at the delicious but tiny bakery next door, you are welcome to sit at the massive table in the Workhouse(also used for classes). Amazing architecture of a 100yr old Ironworks is the perfect setting for inspiring creativity.

A cluster of art and style in the heart of Bend! Such a treat to tap into a little bit of urban and nw hip culture, talk to interesting people and if your lucky music in the courtyard in the evenings on Last Saturday. Next to Sparrow bakery, Amature and Crux brewery… A Must stop in Bend if you’re passing through…
