During a week long stay in Berkley Springs, my two friends and I thought it mandatory to visit a spa for massages and facials. There are quite a few to choose from in the area to we turned to Unilocal for a little direction. After considering the reviews, the prices and the availability to fit all three of us in around the same time, we chose the Bath House. Let me start by saying I am not one to relax during a massage. I have psoriasis and from past Northern Virginia experiences, I’ve come across a few rude comments, one flat refusal of service and the constant anxiety that my non contagious skin disorder is a problem for the therapist. This anxiety keeps me from relaxing and then the massage is just a waste of money. When my friend called to make the reservations at the Bath House, she mentioned to the lady on the phone about my skin condition and my concerns and was assured that I would be in the best of hands. When we arrived Tuesday morning we were seated in the waiting room and almost immediately my esthetician came to get me for my facial, and two therapists came to get Brandi K. and Illysa S. for their massages. We spoke for a moment about what I thought about my skin, she diagnosed my skin as dry, we touched on my psoriasis just for a moment(it’s not on my face so this didn’t really effect my facial), she showed me where to place my belongings and excused herself while I crawled on the table and under the covers. Everything was so soothing. A little warm cleanser, then a cool mask, then a warm towel, soft voices, candles, relaxing music and dim lights, I was relaxed almost immediately and in my own little world. After the facial, I was given a complementary paraffin wax dip for my hands; this was unexpected and very much appreciated! After my facial, I was given a terry cloth robe, flip flops, a glass of water and I was taken to the Relaxation Room to wait for my massage. My therapist came to get me a few moments later. We discussed my psoriasis when I was told she had another client who was severely covered and that she was in no way effected by my skin and that part of her job was to know what was contagious and what wasn’t… and for me to relax… and you know what… I actually did. She focused on the areas that were bothering me, adjusted the pressure to my liking and overall offered probably the best massage I have ever had. The three of us were scheduled to get pedicures after the massage and facials but when I was done with my massage there appeared to be some confusion and they told me they didn’t have me scheduled nor was there time before others appointments. I was okay with it really, until we were checking out and they had added it on my bill and told me I had been scheduled for a pedicure all along. It was quickly resolved and deducted from my bill but I am still a little confused about how the mix up happened. The atmosphere in this place is very simple and it is very clear that the staff goes out of their way to make sure their clients get the most out of the experience. Parking in this area is a bit tricky, there are pay meters but I believe they only hold up to two hours. We’ve been warned the meter attendant was pretty strict and one of our therapists actually ran out during the pedicures to add a few more quarters. I thought that was above and beyond anything they had to do and it was very much appreciated. I am sure the other places in the area are great, but if I ever find myself in Berkley Springs again this will be the spa I choose.

I visited The Bath House Day Spa & Bath Shop this past weekend. The spa is located on the left side, the shop is on the right side. I did not get to experience a massage at the spa, Though I will next time through town as I am a certified massage therapist and found the massages offered at the State Park’s Roman Bath house very disappointing. Their prices for services at the bath house definitely seem reasonable as well. Anyways I visited the bath shop and found it has a bit of unique items I had never seen before. A clay exfoliater, A Thai herbal compress marketed towards individual sale(the ones i’ve seen/used are for professional massage use only). They sell a good amount of Aura Cacia Products and one of the largest selection of AC Essential oils I have ever seen in one place. They also carried the EO brand which is one of my favorites as well. I am truly happy that I stopped by here while passing through on our trip to Pennsylvania. I picked up some nice bath items that I had forgotten at home and I will most likely drop by again. The whole strip of shops along Fairfax Street where this shop is located is really cool. It is also located near an amazing coffee shop, an art gallery and a place for Himalayan/Nepal goods. I have to put a slight mention about the Himalayan store too because I didn’t catch the name and can’t find it listed on Unilocal. We bought an amazing Tibetian Singing Bowl while we were there, they had a large selection of them and were very fun to play with. They would be a great addition to add to your healing régime after buying some of the wonderful bath items in this shop too ;-D NOTE: Close parking is QUARTER meter only for 2 hours. Be sure to being quarters with you if you want to park in front. It is fairly cheap at 30 minutes per quarter. but if that isn’t enough time then it is easy to find street parking at a slight distance from the shops.

Let me start by saying that I am a massage snob. All in all the experience was average. I received the essential spa package(facial and massage) and was relaxed when I left. The staff were very friendly and made you feel comfortable. The massage was average, the best part was the hot towel on your feet after reflexology. When I asked for deeper pressure on my neck the therapist replied by stating she only did deep pressure on the back(which she did not). The facial was more relaxing than the massage in my opinion. I really like the product line used in the facial. My face felt soft and was glowing when I left and even the following day.

As a spa newbie, they left me with a great impression. I got the essential spa package(facial and massage), and would definitely go back again. My girlfriend and I had Jerri for our massages and Jamie for our facials, both did a fantastic job.

I am never going back to DC. Booked a day for my fiancé and I as part of a weekend getaway, and I’m so glad I did my research to find this place. We both had facials, and came out literally glowing — there’s one milk cleanser used that I really should find. We split up for his massage, which he said was incredible, and my herbal cleansing wrap. I felt like an Egyptian goddess… and actually fell asleep, I was so relaxed. The technician gave me the sachet of herbs she’d soaked the wrap sheets in to take home and use in a bath later; the whole staff was lovely and skilled.
