Known for their seven course meal, but my favorite is the crispy chow mien.

Got the phở there and it was pretty good! Service was fast! The place is also really big and tables are really big too. The bathroom is clean as well.

The restaurant is huge! Not many people though. We ordered the BBQ chicken plate. It was also huge! Big portion enough for two to share. I like their carrot soup served for each table. Very soft.

I used to come here frequently late at night since the location is convenient(close to BART and campus) and it was open late. Usually when I’m here there aren’t many other tables so the service isn’t too horrible. The food itself is decent. A lot of the different items kind of leave the same taste in your mouth(maybe similar sauces? Not sure). I would recommend this place for a «late night» or an «on the way» bite but there are better vietnamese restaurants in the area.

My first time trying phở was on Saturday with a friend. With finals approaching, we needed some food to distract us from the horrors of chemistry. So we stumbled upon this place. I didn’t know what the hype for phở was about, but after ordering it and eating it for the first time, I can definitely say I would eat it again! They only had the beef phở on their menu, which was surprising. I expected more options, but the food was good either way! The regular sized bowl for phở was pretty big too! I was so hesitant on getting just regular and not large, but my friend said it would be pretty filling. And it definitely was even for a huge eater like me!

My friends & I came here at around 9:30 P.M., and I was extremely surprised at how big this restaurant is! There were about 5 tables that were filled up including ours during that time. I’d say the restaurant definitely lacks some music because it did get supppeeeer quiet inside at one point. I ordered the Com Thit Nuong and my god the portions were pretty big. Maybe the plate was bigger and that made an impact but for a small girl like me, the portions were pretty big. I’ve been to a lot of phở restaurant in my entire life, and I must say this place’s thit nuong is so so good. The restaurant looked really clean and the servers were accommodating and nice!

Service is slow and they forgot what we ordered even though they wrote it down. We left.

This is the first Vietnamese restaurant I’ve been to that doesn’t have a phở section on their menu LOL. My boyfriend and I came here last night and were surprised to find that they only have one type of phở. It’s your basic combination, with rare steak, brisket, and meatballs. For $ 9.95-$ 10.95, it’s pretty pricy, but it was SOGOOD. Maybe because it was 49 degrees out, but something about it was so delicious. We also ended the meal with the fried banana dessert which is definitely a must try. It comes with a fried banana egg roll cut in half + 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream. 5 stars for food but –1 for service. There were only 3 other tables taken at the time, and we constantly had to flag down the servers to order food or ask for the check. I can’t even imagine how slow the service would be if it was actually crowded!

Love the food here. I always get the grilled pork and shrimp rolls. You have to make them yourself but it’s easy to do. They bring you all the ingredients(wraps, meat, vermicelli noodles, mint, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots) and a bowl of hot water to soften the wraps. The meat is always so good! And it always fills me up. A lot of the times I end up with leftovers. The mamas chicken wings and the short rib rice plate are my other favorites. The resteraunt looks really nice/clean inside. It’s a big place. Lots of tv’s and stage were they sometimes have live music or karaōke. My only issue here is slow service. Everyone is really nice, I think they are just understaffed a lot. Great place but I wouldn’t come here any day I had a time limit.

Came here and I had a vermicelli bowl. I had ordered mine with pork and it came out with chicken on it. I had to ask them and they switched it out, but instead of making a whole new bowl of course they just replaced the meat. My dish was alright but the meat wasn’t too great. The meat was in small pieces and hard to eat. Boyfriend had seafood egg noodles which were not good at all. It had a weird flavor and it was not fresh. Service was shabby and the space definitely needs an update.

This place is near my house so decided to eat their phở for dinner after work. I belive they only have one phở option and it wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t great. Just tastes like any other mediocre phở(kinda like how ramen would taste at a sushi bar that doesn’t specialize in ramen). Well but they are more known for their beef course meal so I can’t really complain. I wouldn’t get the phở if I ever go back but maybe try the beef course meal. Their bathroom was disgusting… really kills my appetite when the bathroom is dirty in the restaurants…:/

It really sucks having to write a bad review for a restaurant where the food was so good. See I’m not sure what was going on with this place. The staff was friendly but very unorganized and the level of service was extremely lacking. Our table never got our drink order. The water on the table was room temp at first but somehow got colder through out the night?!? and when they refilled the water they often missed a empty glass or two. The timing was terrible. I don’t think anyone there knew how to anticipate any of our simple needs like rice paper or clean dishes. I still cant figure out who our server was. The venue was really awkward to say the least. The immediate entrance was nice with tile and the typical fish tank for any Asian cuisine but deeper in, it had a small stage and a large bar plus random TVs and neon lights for the beers on tap. They put most of the patrons in front by the window which is smart for business but the venue is so large it created a long walk from the kitchen to the tables for staff members. It was sad to see the Three of them stressing out as more customers came in when then establishment was maybe half full. The 7 courses was spot on however getting extras like more veggies and rice paper was difficult to say the least. In short the staff just needed a lot more organization especially for dinner on a Saturday night. Simple things like clearing plates when dropping off food or refilling water could have gone a long way. Setting up busing stations, or having water and dishes in a makeshift substation closer to your customers is restaurant service 101, and could have saved them a lot of walking and time.

Came here for dinner on Monday night, the warriors game was on so the backup cheerleaders were turnt up at the bar. We ordered quite a bit of food including Beef Phở, Raw beef salad, pork chop plate, and shrimp rolls. I thought everything was just okay, considering the higher prices you have to pay here. It is a nice place though, definitely cleaner and more modern looking than your typical Vietnamese spot. I might come back to try their 7 course beef, which I see is what they’re known for. Service also needs a lot of help, there were only two people working outside and it took forever to get their attention to get extra bowls or to get the check.

After driving and flying all day, all I wanted was a bowl of phở. Unfortunately, we got stuck on the tarmac and our flight was delayed by over an hour. Which made my plan to dash to the phở joint impossible. Thank goodness for Anh Hong, they are open until 10.30 pm and serve phở. Not the best but beggars can’t be choosers.

What I ate: Seven courses of beef Visit date: January 2, 2015 First time? No. This place used to be the location of my favorite sushi place back in college. Le sigh. Anyway, now it’s home to Anh Hong. I’ve been here before, but today was the time I tried their seven courses of beef. Good to note — if you share one order of the beef course they charge you extra. If you share one order of the beef course and purchase another entrée, there is no split fee. The seven courses of beef included a beef salad, beef carpaccio, three kinds of beef rolls, meat balls, and beef porridge. The beef salad had carrot and daikon. The dressing was light and lemony. It was a delicious first course. The beef carpaccio scared me a little. The rare steak was served in a citrus based sauce. The flavor was fine, but the beef was on the chewy side. It was hard for me to eat. I eventually gave up. The beef rolls made my mouth tired, too. Some of the textures were just not my cup of tea, but the flavors were inviting. My two favorite courses were the last two — the meat balls and the porridge. The meat balls were flavorful and tender; the porridge warm and comforting. The rolls and meat balls were served with leafy greens, pickled carrots & daikons, and spring roll wrap so you can make your own rolls. Note that they have bands come in some nights. I didn’t realize this and unfortunately this night I was hoping for a quiet dinner. Of course, even if the band wasn’t playing it would still be a distracting dinner because of all the TVs they have up. It’s kind of a strange mix — a classy looking restaurant with TVs. Were they going for«sports bar»? Also note, they do not provide moist towelettes after the ‘hands-on’ feast; they really should.

I’ve been here twice for lunch and I found both to be great. My first visit, I ordered the pork and shrimp salad. The light lemon dressing of the salad went well with the pork and shrimp. A very good salad option for lunch. My second visit, I had the bbq beef leaves dry noodles. The grilled beef rolled in a ti leaf was very tasty. As for the dry noodles, think of it as phở without the soup. You add the fish sauce to flavor and hot sauce to your taste. Another good lunch option as it didn’t feel like a heavy dish, though it was a lot. With the usual Berkeley lunch spots I go to, I have put this on my regular list.

Decent food, incredibly slow service. To our server’s credit however, this is completely on the owner for not hiring enough servers. When a group of 5 of us came in for lunch, our server was the only person on the floor. Later, one more came out when the rush began. Two people, without a designated busser or cashier, cannot handle this fairly large dining room, especially during a rush. Some of us ordered phở, and some others ordered a different kind of noodle soup. A regular bowl of phở will set you back $ 10, and while it is large, and certainly wasn’t bad, it wasn’t all that great either. and I can’t justify paying $ 10 for that when you can get a much better and cheaper bowl of phở in Oakland. I may come back to try their signature 7 courses of beef – it definitely seems like Anh Hong is aiming to be a more upscale Vietnamese restaurant than your hole-in-the-wall phở/bun place.

Arriving in Berkeley for orientation for my sister and have only heard rave things about this place from my family. It’s fine dining Vietnamese food without departing too far from its cultural roots. Their signature item here is the 7 course beef, and apparently I had this years ago when I was younger. I didn’t remember then but I’m so glad I had it now. The 7-course meal was very good. In addition to having this, we also ordered 2 other entrée items. The 7-course meal is a little overpriced, almost $ 22 /person. You can order 2 of those for 4 people and order 2 other entrees to try more items. What really killed this review and my experience at Ahn Hong was the service or lack thereof!!! This was a Saturday night, and almost a full dining room of patrons. They had 2 people on the floor taking care of the entire restaurant — I was shocked. They had one guy who also had to seat each group down as well as take orders, bring orders out, etc. The other girl seemed a little more experienced but you can tell that she was rushing to take orders and getting to the next table. At some points throughout the dinner, the manager had to serve the food or the cook came out. I don’t know if they were understaffed that night or something but everything really took a long time. Usually amazing food is enough for me to forget about the lack of service but when the food is taking over an hour to come out, no water, no vegetables, etc. — there’s a problem

I attended a student org banquet, and there were 3 memorable take-home messages: 1. DIY Vietnamese spring rolls are pretty fun to make! The server did a nice demo, and now I feel so accomplished knowing how to make these exotic, tasty appetizers. Be sure to dip the entire rice wrapper in the hot water though – initially I thought it was just the edges to seal the roll together, and found it impossibly crunchy to eat. Crunchy does not begin to describe it… it was like eating hard plastic, so if there is one thing you remember from this review it’s to dip the wrapper. All the meat selections were yummy, and the rice noodles were a refreshing condiment adding a balanced texture dimension; however portions were small. 2. The beef appetizer is raw beef. It’s an interesting marinade, basically a badass Asian ceviche with hardcore raw beef. It wasn’t bad, just a tad bit surprising when you see thin red slices and eat it thinking it’s tomatoes. I got a stomach ache afterwards but I speculate it is more from the shock of eating raw beef than anything in the dish itself. 3. The lighting is fairly dark. This takeaway is likely not applicable to most people, but if you are planning to take lots of pictures of food and/or people like we did at our banquet here, a dSLR is recommended.

I don’t give many 1 star reviews, but after last night’s experience I couldn’t help but not give this place any more than that. I came here for my friend’s 21st birthday dinner. We had a party of 10. I was the first to arrive and I had brought a cake with a box of candles, I asked if they could keep it in the fridge for me till the end of dinner(it was obviously a surprise for the birthday boy). Half the people ordered their famous 7 courses of beef. The rest ordered regular entrees of the menu. I ordered the crispy chow mein. The noodles were alot different then how it usually is, almost reminded me of thin wonton strips. Flavors were fine, but nothing special. My friend ordered the combination egg noodle soup and the broth was way too sweet which was odd. I don’t eat meat, but the beef courses seemed fine. If it’s more than 1 person ordering it than it’s served family style. The service however, was atrocious. I don’t go into Asian restaurants with high expectations. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for 7 years so I understand the difficulties and what not. But this was horrible. First off, it took forever to try and get a server’s attention. Second, at the end of the meal, the waitress asked if I wanted the cake then. Well, guess that’s not a surprise anymore. She then just plops it down on the table. With the box of candles on top of it. There’s a reason I gave her the box of candles. Seriously? I don’t think it’s much asking for a server to put on a few candles and light it before bringing it out. Then, we had to wave them down for forks. And then plates. And then a knife. And then to help clear the dishes from dinner(we even bussed our own table so it’d be easier). Then after that pleasant experience, we were given the check. I asked if we could do separate checks and she told me that they can only take 2 cards. Understandable, alot of restaurants do that. But they at least ADVERTISE that they do at least somewhere in the menu, or in the restaurant. Give patrons a heads up. Especially for a big party! Luckily we all had cash, but it was a headache. And to top off that, the attitude wasn’t very pleasant. While the food was just average(and a bit overpriced), the horrible service just left a bad taste in my mouth.
