Channing Guest House

I meant to leave a review for his place when I stayed here in April, but alas I forgot my log-​in. Here goes:
Judy is a personable hostess with a bread maker (YUM!) and chickens that lay fresh eggs everyday. What more can you want? She took me to Marshalls and showed me around Berkeley a bit. I really enjoyed hanging out with her.
I stayed in the smaller of two available rooms. I believe it was the red room, but I am not sure now. Five stars for attention to interior decoration, and clean bathrooms. Unlike previous reviewers, I had an indoor shower.
The neighborhood is close to buses that go into the heart of Berkeley. There are also parks and a great Co-​op nearby selling organic food and bulk staples like dried fruit (a personal favorite).
This is a quirky, grandma’s house for the boho-​appreciative and thrifty soul. I would stay again if I am ever in Berkeley.

Wow, what a wonderful stay my wife and I had with Judy in Berkeley. When we arrived at her home, we were greeted by a delicious Lemon Cake and lots of Judy’s friends. In the evening Judy took us to a lovely restaurant overlooking San Francisco Bay. What a beautiful spot. Great Friends, Great Food and Great Scenery, Priceless.
In the morning Judy took us to the Amtrak station in Emeryville! What a special time we had at the Channing house and we look forward to a return trip out west and to Berkeley, Ca.

I stayed here for 3 weeks in August in the room under the roof (neither the red nor yellow room, which are nicer but more expensive). The room is simple and perfectly meet the requirements of students who want a temporary accomodation (shower is in the courtyard, no worries, you won’t feel cold). I had full access to the kitchen and cooked several times. My landlady, Judy, was great, kind, and helpful (she does laundry). She welcomed me with a delicious pasta meal. The price is very convenient ($ 30/​night). The whole house is amazing.

I stayed in the red room which has an attached bathroom right in the room. It was really cute, with old fashion charm, like Yardley of London soaps. In the living room there was old fashioned china. I really felt home and nurtured in this place, exactly what I needed. Judith was so warm, welcoming, and nurturing, and I felt like I was being taken care of by my grandmother. She shared about her life and experiences. Judith made home made bread and cakes. It has a jacuzzi. I am blessed by angels to find this place and it was a safe place to live in.

6 stars if I could! Judy is a doll and we felt right at home. Hot tub was great, chickens in the back yard are awesome, and the house itself is adorably eclectic. The price is more than reasonable and we would have stayed longer if we could. When you book, do it in advance and ask for the yellow room (it’s the biggest), but truly, ANY of them will do. Enjoy!

This place is amazing — Judy’s just like the cool grandma in the movies, cooks for you, has fresh bread everyday, and when you arrive, there’s a teddy bear on a bed that looks like a fine confection. She’s thought of every detail and treats you like her favorite kin. Even has a hot tub and little meditation area in the back, and real chickens! The room I have has its own bathroom that’s so cozy it makes me smile. I’ll stay here everytime I visit Berkeley or SF !

I stayed at this «grandma» house in May 2012. It did bring back memories of my own grandmother’s house with antiques, pocket doors, and lace doilies. Judy is indeed a grandma sharing her fresh eggs from her own chickens in the morning. I was very comfortable staying in this 100 year old house in a diverse neighborhood.

Five stars for sure. The rooms are immaculate as are the shared bathroom and WC. Judy had fresh flowers in our room, a fresh bottle of water, and some chocolates. The kitchen is available and it’s very comfortable. We had breakfast and dinner there most nights (food from Berkeley Bowl — a 30 minute walk away). Good Lord, you can even go out back and check the chicken coop for fresh eggs! A washer and dryer are available and I think there is a TV available, but who needs it here? Internet access is fast and reliable. The garden is great — classic Berkeley, very inviting. The Berkeley Café Trieste is a few blocks away, as is Good Vibrations, Black Oak Books, an architectural salvage place (nice), and some upscale cafes. Bus stops are nearby, but we’ve always thought Berkeley bus routes are confusing. Yet, we got back every day. Finally, it’s nice to do business with a truly good person. So yes, it’s a very good place and a good deal.

Judy is an über-​cool Berkeley grandma who makes you feel at home the moment you walk in the door. This is a European style set-​up: guests come and go and bathrooms are shared. The garden is beautiful and comes complete with chickens, cats and one friendly dog. There’s also a lovely soaking tub for two in the backyard. This is the only place we stay when we come here and I am delighted we found it. If you’re lucky, Judy will make a delicious treat for you to come home to at the end of the day – what a wonderful little place to stay!

I loved staying at this house! The room was beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. My husband and I recently rented a room in the house, we shared a bathroom with an adjacent room, a beautiful bathroom with french colors and a gigantic claw foot bathtub with modern/​updated shower fixture. Once again, bathroom was immaculately clean. The people who stay in this house are kind and courteous, as is this gem’s genuinely awesome owner. I have no complaints. We had privacy and lived so comfortably in this house I felt at home entirely. Not good for anyone who is allergic to cat or dog, but if one is willing to dose themselves with the proper allergy meds to stay in the house, I still highly recommend it. We hung out in the tented jacuzzi on our last night which is ready to get soaked in 24 – 7 in the well tended-​to garden out back. Great price, great amenities, overall lovely experience.
