I’m biased because I worked here, but after speaking with several regular patrons I’ve come to agree that theater here isn’t just «student theater,» but is really on par with professional productions in the Bay Area.
Granted, there is a LOT of theater going on in the Bay Area, so things are a little diluted, but for the price– $ 8 senior/​student (with any student ID), $ 14 general, you get a great night of theater. Productions are professionally mentored/​supervised and student-​run, and the department has really come into its own under this model.
I don’t give ‘em five stars– yet– because they’re still working on a few things, like setting up concessions for intermission and shortening some of the shows.
I do believe this place is, nevertheless, a diamond in the rough. Ultimately it’s word of mouth that dictates what gets published in the bigger news outlets like the Chronicle or Guardian.
