This place did a good, basic breakfast — nothing fabulous, nothing bad — at a reasonable price. It had a kind of slapdash feel overall — it wasn’t super clean, and my potatoes came with sour cream slopped over the side, which then proceeded to get on my shirt, my purse, and so on. I’d go again, but it probably wouldn’t be my first choice.(It had the big advantage of being open Mondays.)

Eater BEWARE!!! This place is nasty! I ordered a sandwich and a side salad. Had eaten half the sandwich when I thought I saw something MOVING on my salad! I left the piece of lettuce and a big black bug was crawling around on the salad! When I finally got the waitress to come over she looked at it and said«oh it was probably just in the packaging» like THAT was a reason to just go ahead and eat it! NEVERAGAIN!

This is a great place for breakfast! The burgers are good to, small diner, old fashioned service, been coming here for years.

I very much enjoy eating lunch at Gilman Grill. I’ve tried a variety of things here and they always hit the spot. The portions are good sizes, big enough to be fulfilling but not overwhelmingly so. Both the lamb burger and the Hawaiian burger are juicy and flavorful. The huevos rancheros dish has a lovely combination of items that come together deliciously. The most recent thing I ate was the roast beef, and the gravy was scrumptious though a tad salty, so it went well eating with the vegetables. The bread for the roast beef was underneath and soaked up all the flavor.

My gf and I had a hankering for some noshin’ after a long night of work. Fulfilled here! Fresh squeezed OJ, you say? 2 glasses! And a delicious $ 6 platter of eggs and bacon and Acme-like artisan bread toast? My treat of $ 15 was cool— don’t recall it being so tasty here. Yay for proximity to the freeway onramp. Could be our new rendezvous spot!

Breakfast is the most important meal for me. When I Unilocaled breakfast, filtered cheap and near me, the Gilman Grill was the first option. Seeing that my long time Unilocal friend Rinky gave it four stars I had great chances in getting what my stomach wanted and my wallet can handle. Ordered the #2 two egg any way, with choice of meat and bread, with potato and sour cream. My friend a non egg eater ordered side of potato, bread, and toast. Arrived in a timely fashion. Serving size, I had a doggy bag to take home. Good all around. The home fries could be browned more. It was cheap, tasty, and fast.

It smelled really good from the outside of the restaurant and when I walked in the place was packed so I thought that was a good sign. The server was very nice & brought me the menu promptly. Sadly it went downhill from here. The fries were tasty but cold and I found not one, but two pieces of hair in my sandwich as well as a slightly rotten piece of lettuce. Disappointed because the flavor was good, but hair & cold fries will keep me from returning.

I like this place. It’s not anything fancy, but the food is good, the servers are nice, and the prices are very reasonable. Also, every time I’ve been there, they are pretty quick. I’ve eaten there twice and gotten takeout twice, and have been happy with my experience every time.

Ambience was nice, not too crowded for Saturday brunch. The crab and artichoke Benedict was not great, but the pancakes were fine. Friendly servers who were very attentive.

This place is good for a quick breakfast. Its not the newest looking place but the food is pretty good at a reasonable price. It wasnt too busy and service was good. Im a little picky when it comes to breakfast but Gilman Grill had a warm feeling to it and its right off the freeway so it was a breeze to get to and has parking.

I won’t return or recommend this place to anyone! This place has HORRIBLE service unless you are a frequent patron. I went out to breakfast with my mom and after walking in and up to the counter we waited a few minutes before the two waitresses behind the counter stopped their personal conversation to acknowledge us. Then after being seated the waitress basically tossed our water glasses and silverware on the table as she walked passed possibly in a rush to return to her conversation. I ordered coffee and there was something floating in the creamer when it was brought to the table. I cannot comment on the food because we left before receiving our breakfast due to the horrible customer service and dirty silverware we were given.

I love to go out for breakfast! One of my favorite places to go is the Gilman Grill. The staff is friendly, the food is great and it’s a comfortable place to go! I enjoy their omelettes. The eggs are fluffy and the fillings are tasty. Their standard bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast are not to be passed up either. And on Sundays, they have waffles! Lunch is delicious if you like a really good hamburger and fries or check out their BLT’s. Great food and great service for a comfortable place to go.

Nice place except for the shrieking kid seated next to me. Apparently the son of the waitress. The food is mediocre at best. Damn my laziness I could the done better at home and saved a few bucks. Apparently I’m not in there target demographic. My greeting was tepid and insincere. Bright spot is the coffee pretty good, although I had finished my meal before being given a refill and that was only after having asked a couple of times. I’m done with this place!

I enjoyed this place and I would go back. I enjoyed the outdoor option, the variety of the menu and the garden. I went here on a Sunday brunch with my father and mother in law and they both enjoyed the food as well. I had the artichoke and crab eggs benedict, my father in law got two eggs, a hot sausage and toast, and my mother in law had the eggs benedict with a side of spinach. The my crab and artichoke eggs benedict was good. however, i have had better eggs benedict. I LOVE the fact that café grows their own veggies for their dishes. Also the orange juice is fresh squeezed.

As regular Lake Merritt weekend brunchers we wanted to try out a new spot and heard about Gilman Grill in West Berkeley. We got here within minutes and the corner location made this cozy joint easy to find with plenty of parking!!! We noticed the outdoor benches but opted to sit indoors. We chose a booth underneath the beautiful painting of Cambodian Apsara dancers — and being Cambodian-American we felt right at home! :) The staff was friendly, attentive and prompt with our asks and the food was simple, yet good! The turkey sausage tasted fresh and homemade. Great for brunch fanatics, couples, families and students on a budget! We are definitely going to be back!

Unassuming little corner spot. Inside a kinda of throw back café style, think clean 1960s ish. Many vegetarian options! H2o comes in beer mugs :). Con: smell of a welding shop wafts in a bit. Pros: Place was packed! Never slowed down. Delicious!!! Healthy & reasonably priced. Best eggplant sandwich ever — was baked not fried. Not a thick rubbery slice, thin and delicious. Roast peppers, yellow & red onions. Not greasy. Homemade dressings? Great salads; fresh and pieces did not need to be cut. Can’t wait to come back.

Solid breakfast & brunch place. Pastries cabinet is just meh, but kitchen-made breakfast items like omelets and pancakes make up for the lack of decent croissants and pastries. Modest looking place, nothing chic, but totally expected @Berks area. Will be back

This place was super cute. We showed up around noon on a Sunday and got a table outside.(there are only a couple, next to the parking lot) The only problem we had were the bees. Guess they liked our bacon. My friend calls bees in the fall«meat bees.» Anyway, the food was great — I can’t remember exactly what I got because it was about a month and a half ago that I went, but we got breakfast food and I remember really liking it. Oh, and mimosas! Big and not expensive. My friend got a ham and cheese omelet that she really liked, I remember that. I’d definitely go back if I was in the area. Their bakery items looked fantastic. My friend took some donuts home and I was jealous. :)
