My go to curry place in Berkeley that’s close to campus. You can def. tell where it is because it’s a restaurant made from a house. The service is quick and efficient every time i’ve been. I don’t stray too far from the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. They pair so well together! There’s tons of seating inside, in the back, and outside. I usually order ahead just so I don’t waste time since it can get packed since it’s so close to campus. Plus: There’s unlimited milk tea that you can get by the water!

Super friendly service! Every time I order the cashier greets me with a smile and never forgets to mention to complementary chai. Though the food isn’t the best, it’s a pretty good deal for what you get. Portions are huge, and you get way more naan for your $$ here than you do at IFE. If you’re looking to stray from the famous chicken tikka masala, but still want a creamy dish, go for the paneer tikka masala or the veggie korma.

What a confusing experience. We walked in, went to the cash register, and the guy pushes the menu to us– no welcome or instructions on what is going on. I guess we seat ourselves? Maybe he thought we were doing take out? After we placed our order at the counter, they brought us the wrong order. When we finally get our order delivered to our table, we had to get our own plates and utensils at the cash register, but that’s normal for the restaurant I guess. They also charged us for the«free naan and rice». We got free rice, but charged us for the naan even though we ordered two curries. I also heard we get free chai tea, they only gave us water. The worst part of my experience was that they let a customer bring their dog into the restaurant. It was barking and climbing all over people in the middle of the restaurant.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnn! Too bad it doesn’t taste that great… But for a HUGE garlic naan(that turned out to be pretty bland and not even that soft), $ 2.50 isn’t that bad. I also didn’t feel like getting curry because the kitchen looked chaotic(or like, the food being made obviously didn’t look fresh)… But the complimentary chai tea to the side of the register makes up for it.

This place is a go to for all of my group dinners for groups higher than 10. There is always so much space in the back for us to spread out and be as loud as we want to. The food is consistent and has a good deal during the day time where you can get free naan or free rice with any purchase.

My boyfriend and I like coming here when we’re craving Indian food and we’re willing to make a drive to Berkeley from Vallejo. Although our favorite spot is in Benicia, this place also has its pros. We usually order chicken tikka along with a veggie dish, such as saag paneer(spinach and cheese curry) We also get some garlic, plain, and cheese naan. What we love about this place besides the food is that it’s super laid back, the staff is friendly, chai tea is free, and they’re open late! The only cons for me are the drive, the PARKING(but it is Berkeley — what do ya expect, right?), and weekends can get really packed, especially when they’re close to closing, and they get really backed up in the kitchen and could take awhile. Still would recommend this place to anyone regardless!

I have come here many times over the years, finding the food to be full of flavor but the place quite dirty. My opinion was clarified today when I was served«pakora» with a human tooth baked inside. My partner and I nearly vomited and thankfully it was not swallowed. This is one of the most disgusting things I can imagine. I will never be back and be fair warned– the standards are so low that body parts may he found in your food.

The food is usually pretty good! The Naan bread is outstanding. The tikki masala is ok, but the chicken is usually dry. The chicken vindaloo is spicy and delicious. BUT my big issue is the bathrooms. They are disgusting. And it makes it very difficult to enjoy your meal after using them. I understand there are a lot of college students who disrespect the bathrooms on a daily basis but they should have enough to staff to clean up.

Awful! Terrible! SO bad. Our dal makhani looked and tasted bizarre – sort of like somebody had poured in a bottle of vinegar or chemicals and random spices. Or maybe the dish had simply gone bad. I don’t know – couldn’t eat enough to identify the problem. Our aloo gobi was mushy and overcooked, with a slightly off flavor, but not so bad we couldn’t eat it. The bread and rice were tolerable. So we paid around $ 40 for a small dinner of mushy cauliflower and starch, whose sole virtue was that they did not taste as if they had been contaminated. We will never, ever order food from this place again. Too bad Unilocal doesn’t allow negative stars.

This place is a Berkeley staple — it has been in Berkeley for years(generations?) now, and everybody raves about it. Basically, your Berkeley experience wouldn’t be complete without a stop in this place. With that being said, I graduated undergrad without ever frequenting this place. Feeling incomplete, I decided to finally venture to this establishment. Here are my thoughts: I love their patio area! It is a great place to eat and enjoy a warm Berkeley day. I also love that they give free milk tea(which is decent, but it’s warm). The place is also spacious. And service is courteous; they deliver the food to you. But in all honesty, their food was decent. It wasn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t anything noteworthy(although I was debating whether to give this place two-stars or three, but ultimately decided that the price to taste ratio is extremely disproportionate ergo resulting in two stars). Their curry though was lacking any real favor, which is surprising because I’ve always enjoyed Indian food for the distinguishable spice. And for the most part, I felt as both of the curry dish(one prawn and the other lamb) was just there for dipping. For some reason, this place has definitely garnered traction to remain relevant in the Berkeley scene. However, don’t come here for great Indian food because you won’t find it here. Instead, you’ll find(in my opinion) Americanized-Indian food that’s unfortunately indistinguishable from Indian food I’ve had in suburban malls. Personally, I don’t think I missed much during my undergrad years by not visiting this Berkeley staple. Their free milk tea though is still bomb.

Authentic Indian restaurant with friendly casual atmosphere. All of the curries are individually made to order in small pans. They also roll and bake their naans fresh too! It was slightly crusty on the edges and soft in the middle, probably my favorite part of the whole dinner. Both of our curry had a weird slight sour taste to it. It also as buttery and rich as we expected it to be(especially for Chicken Tikka Masala). I would also want to to be spicier. We ordered: Chicken Tikka Masala($ 6.99) Lamb curry($ 7.99) Naan($ 1.99)

Pretty decent indian food near campus. Obviously not as good as the places around home but I am a fan. For roughly 10 bucks you can order a dish and naan. I usually get the chicken tikka masala with garlic naan. Obviously the goto of many. Last time I went I asked for it to be spicier which they delivered. If you like spicy, I suggest upping the level. The naan is pretty nice and fluffy as well. I am definitely a fan. My friend tried the garlic cheese naan. If you like cheese I suggest you get it, it was surprisingly good. The place itself is not TOO large. It is GREAT for groups of up to 4. There isn’t much interaction with the staff, but they are all nice. Remember to bus your stuff to the carts around.

I’ve only ever gotten the chicken tikka masala here, but every time that I ask for medium or spicy, they give me VERYMILD. As mild as it gets. The mildest chicken tikka masala I’ve ever had. I wonder… If I ask for extra spicy next time, am I still going to get mild? The wait times are usually pretty long too, I’d call in ahead if you’re getting takeout. Also it’s annoying that you have to order the rice separately.

Generally good food and inexpensive prices, but the service isn’t great. However, your entrée, rice, and naan are all separately priced. So while you may be paying $ 6.50 for your entrée, you have to add and extra $ 2 for rice and an extra $ 2.50 if you would like naan. I generally get the veggie korma with garlic naan, and it’s delicious. Disclaimer that the garlic on the naan is garlic powder and not fresh, but it’s still great. The veggies are cooked in masala sauce, and the flavor is the perfect balance of not too hot or too mild. Today, the guy taking our order at the counter seemed super annoyed that he had to remove his headphones and interact with us. We paused for a moment to glance down at the menu, and he put them back in while we were still ordering, which I found to be super rude. They weren’t very busy when we came, yet the tables weren’t wiped down. We went to get napkins when our meal arrived, and the containers were empty. When asking another guy at the front where to find additional napkins, he rolled his eyes and pointed toward the empty containers.

Met up with some long time friends here. We were originally thinking of going to another restaurant on the street but Indian food sounded even better on a cold night. Plus, there is plenty of seating for a large group. The portions are just how I like ‘em — big. I recommend all the naans. The chicken tikka masala was good but the grilled chicken was even better. The name of that dish is blanking on me at the moment… You just can’t go wrong with anything you order here. No, it is not a fancy restaurant so don’t go in expecting that kind of atmosphere or service. What they focus on is delivering quick and tasty food in large portions. To that extent, they excel. No, not the most amazing Indian fare I’ve had, but you should probably find somewhere else to get that(and pay many more dollars). Parking is street. We went at 8pm on a Monday during finals at Cal so parking wasn’t difficult to find. The 6 of us went family style and spent $ 80 including tip. Had some leftovers too. I probably would have been a frequenter of this restaurant if I attended Cal. House of Curries, I hope we meet again!

My dinner at House of Curries can be summed up in 3 phrases: very divey atmosphere, free chai tea, and MMMMNAAN. — Divey atmosphere You’re getting dinner on Durant Ave, so you probably shouldn’t be expecting top notch service and spotless amenities. House of Curries definitely gives off a dingy vibe, but I’m guessing most of their patrons don’t mind it. It gets crowded with groups, and since you seat yourself after you order, I saw a lot of people claiming tables with clothes, a cup of tea, their backpacks, etc. — Free chai tea ’Nuff said… help yourself to a cup on the shelf and make sure to add a little bit of sugar! — MMMMNAAN I ordered the lamb curry with cheese naan and had no regrets. The cheese is mozzarella though, so um, not sure if that’s the most authentic but I could care less because it was SOGOODPIPINGHOT. The lamb curry was flavorful with huge lamb chunks but they were a bit dry. Overall, I spent less than $ 10 for a hearty dinner and had some to spare the next day. I’d come back for a no-frills, filling & warm meal again.

Very solid Indian place. Not the best I’ve had but a good way to have healthy filling food after a long day of studying if you’re a student at cal. Must-haves: — Chicken Tikka Malassa(spicy but soooooo delicious) — Mango Lassi(seriously how good is this drink. I would have it every day) — And of course Naan 4⁄5 because of the sketchy area… You might want to try the restaurant place on College if you want to sit down and eat.

Why the low ratings? Anyone who’s graduated from Berkeley needs to admit that they’ve gone here multiple times when they’re too lazy to cook a meal. I myself frequented this place numerous times and it’s a notch above the other student-priced Indian places around campus(i.e. Naan N Curry). Plus, they’re incredibly supportive of student organization fundraisers; we’ve never been denied once. Again, the food is student-priced and for what you pay for, you get notably good food. Their curries are sweeter than most but I like my curry cooked that way. The sizes of their naan is large; it’s sufficient to share with one other person. Don’t get the regular naan either, try the garlic naan. Chicken Tikka Masala — Most likely the most frequently ordered dish. It’s a crowd pleaser. I’m guilty of ordering this dish one too many times but it’s just so good that it’s hard to be adventurous and try something else. Palak Paneer — Vegetarian curry with spinach and cheese. It’s pretty good as well. I love love the chai tea section of the store. It’s unlimited and I tend to have several helpings over the course of the meal.

I feel like I’ve warmed up to this place very quickly. The workers are friendly and the food is good. Honestly, it’s satisfying when I’m missing home food. It’s definitely not the best; I don’t think any Indian places on south side serve«real» Indian food. If I’m ever just in the mood for Indian food, a naan and ctm does the trick! Free naan or rice with the purchase of any curry from 2−5PM Monday — Friday.
