Mitchel Rubin is basically a tie salesman that hates fat people? Well; maybe not whimsical fat people? He only kinda hated me. Fortunately, like the major portion of the population, he has learned to tolerate us and fortunately he is a very good tie salesman. Sorry Mitch, I know I started the conversation and you did say it was a conversation you were uncomfortable with because it was one that you could not win. Ok, maybe I am not being completely fair. Let’s get to what is important. One look at Mr. Rubin’s hand painted whimsical designs on the highest grade silk products and you will realize he is a very talented artist that takes his work extremely seriously. I am proud to say I have a custom, one of a kind tie by this talented craftsperson and I am coveting a pair of custom braces. You may be asking yourself; «what the ‘heck’ are braces? Braces are suspenders that hook to buttons on your pants rather than fastening to your waistband with clips. I certainly will be buying a pair of these hand painted masterpieces as soon as I have the money to not only afford the braces but a pair of pants with fancy buttons to accommodate them. Of course, a really nice French cuff shirt with custom cuff links would completely rock this look. Mitchel also has custom painted cummerbunds and bowties and is accomplished painter as well. Check out his site some time.

Joe K. and I met this artist during the Sacramento Arts Festival. Mitchel Rubin stood out right off the bat with his out going personality, funny sense of humor and his original artwork. While he is a true contemporary artist that explores specific shapes, colors and designs on canvas, we were also attracted to all the wearable art that he had on display. Specifically, the hand painted silk ties, bow ties, cumber buns, suspenders, hats, and even some Mardi Gras style masks. My boyfriend doesn’t get to dress formally very often, and when he does, it’s usually pretty standard looking attire that every other man normally wears. Mitchel Rubin added some interest and fun into dressing up for that special occasion. There were many colors to choose from with his original, eye catching abstract designs beautifully painted on each silk accessory. My boyfriend finally narrowed his decision down to a red bow tie. Which he looks forward to wearing when the time arrives. We had an enjoyable time talking to Mitchel about his history as an artist and how his life evolved today. If you are looking for that unique gift for the man who has everything, Mitchel might have some ideas for you, or you can request something made to order just for yourself!
