This review is for the restaurant portion of Pappys. Honestly their student deals are unbeatable. $ 6 for burger fries and a drink! $ 7 for a full Caesar salad(HUGE) a drink and cornbread/garlic bread. They also have wing Wednesday which is also a good deal 4pm-9pm 50% off with a purchase of a drink. The cashier guy is also one of the nicest people. I originally ordered warm cornbread but when I got my meal it wasn’t warm. A few minutes later he brought the warm one out and said he was sorry and he also gave me a to go package for the cold corn bread. Thanks a lot!

The service was super slow for some people, but better for others, meaning those with boobs. Food was ok, but wouldn’t go back to watch game or eat unless I was dying for starvation and happen to be crawling by Pappys. Don’t waste your time.

Go-to burger place in Berkeley, especially with student specials making things so cheap. I enjoy their chicken and tri-tip sandwiches the most! They also always have the biggest sporting events on at any point in the day, which is a welcome break during lunch hour.

Stopped here while my daughter was in orientation for a quick drink. We ended up staying longer then anticipated! The bar tender was awesome! He made the visit! Very friendly and he gave us ideas for things to do while in Berkeley. We did order chicken wings and chicken tenders. So great! Everything was fresh and drinks were on point! Music was good too! Definitely a great bar to check out while your here!

Stopped in for pre-game basketball with friends who had previously been there. Was told that this was the place to be prior to CAL games. Ordered a pitcher and was told that it was $ 28 for Stella. We were floored with the price and was told that Pappy’s jacks there prices on game days! My friend announced that he was there 2 weeks ago(not on a game day) and that the price was $ 17 for Stella pitchers. That is a huge delta to pay for the privilege of being in Berkeley when the team is in town. Price gouging at it’s finest! The hamburger was overcooked to nearly cremation levels. It was served cold(are they pre-cooked and sitting in a pan in the kitchen in hopes of a home?) as were the fries. Just an overall terrible experience that started with a good price raping on the beer. All down hill from there. Sorry CAL fans, there has to be a better place for game day Bears!

Good college sports bar. A fair amount of seating, even some seating(with TV’s downstairs which is kind of dark). Came to watch the Warriors game and it was packed because the football game was also on. Drinks were really affordable. Had a vodka tonic and hennesy on ice for $ 10! Crowd was pretty young since it’s a college area. To park there is a fee. We found street parking, 2 hrs $ 5.50.

Bartenders need some customer service classes. Hard to be acknowledge if you stand in front of their faces for minutes. I ‘mean… What is the deal

I went here once with a group of friends to catch up during the holidays while we were all home. We picked this place precisely because the Warrior’s game was on and we got to watch it on three different screens while the other TVs were showing NFL and college football. I liked this place because it wasn’t crowded despite being in college town Berkeley, but I know that it was only because students were not back to school yet. Either way, I liked the sweet potatoes and BLT I ordered, but I especially liked the $ 12 pitchers of draft beer.

If you’ve ever found yourself on the south side of campus, a bit later in the evening, with the sudden urge to wet your whistle, you’ve no doubt discovered that your faced with a choice that borders on the inhumane: Pappys?.. or, Kips? After my experience last night – buying a pitcher, tipping well, sitting down to enjoy it amongst a small group of mild-mannered friends, only to be kicked out 10 minutes later on account of ‘last call’ – it’s clear to me that the correct answer to that question is never – and will never be – Pappy’s. Our barely-sipped beers were literally ripped from our hands ~10 minutes after the bartender had sold them to me. To be clear: I’m not exactly saying that one should always, instead, definitely go to Kips(only a shill, an idiot, or a teenager desperately trying to pass for 21 would ever venture such an endorsement). But I am, definitively, confident in the notion that we can all do much better than Pappy’s on any given night. Read a book; buy a 40 and go sit in People’s Park; but don’t – just don’t – think to yourself«it can’t really be THAT bad…» because it can, and it is, and it will be, and I will have told you so. So just don’t.

$ 12 for two HUGE shots of chilled vodka with OJ backs. Whaaaat? Going to college in SF and then moving down to SJ post-grad, my initial thought was that the server charged us for ONE shot — I am obviously too used to overpriced liquor. But nope, $ 12 for both. My friend and I made a joke that we should just start coming here for happy hours… ;)

Food sucks, and it’s always packed here. Personally, I wouldn’t come here to spend money on fries, soda, and a burger. That’s just a glorified McDonald’s. At least at a McDonald’s I can hear people talking to me. It also seems like there are police cars and firetrucks here late at night at least a few times a month. Hmmmm, I wonder what that means…

(+) I remember when this was Blake’s. Thursday was«college» night and we’d go clubbing here sometimes. Dancing was downstairs in a dark, sweaty, tightly packed crowd. Good times. (+) Modernized, nice big flat screen TV’s, updated bar area, and Cal décor. jerseys of some of the most famous and successful Cal athletes in recent history. (+) Outdoor area is a nice space, it can be reserved for events and big parties. Stool seating by the open wall facing Telegraph is a nice people watching spot. Always some characters walking up & down that street. (-) Food was just okay. Chicken tenders were pricey for what they give and the breading was a little mushy inside and undercooked. I do like how the condiments, napkins, water etc. are laid out and easily accessible in one area by the kitchen. (-) Bathrooms are downstairs still. Just to pee I had to walk through a private business society mixer going on… basically a bunch of undergrads(mostly Asian) in business suits networking and/or flirting lol

Student special is one of the best deals ever! 5 dollars plus tax for fries, soda, and a burger. It doesn’t taste the best but definitely worth the price. Pappy’s has a chill environment. Friendly people with friendly staff. Definitely will come back.

Cheap drinks, nice bartenders, oh and there’s a dance floor down stairs? Sounds A-OK to me! Why only A-OK though? Well it was a slow night. Surprised that in the middle of Summer on a Thursday night, there wasn’t really much people. Where’d everybody go? Did I miss the memo? Do people not party on Thursday nights anymore? I guess school’s out… On the flip side if you’re looking for plenty of room to dance, this may be the place for you. Bring your crew and you can have the place almost all to yourself. Sounds A-OK right? Onto the spot

Back in my days, this place was called Blake’s and it was the only place that had a dancefloor for 18+. So now it’s more well lit than before, still the sticky floors, better bathrooms than Kips. I don’t know about dance floors now but it’s a decent spot for sports, you have like two huge TVs at the bar, one TV at the food line, a giant projection on the wall to the right, regular sized TVs everywhere else. They have downstairs searing too, more comfortable than upstairs. They have a bar down below as well. They really kept the Blake’s look. This place gets packed, I can see why though, their TVs are better than Kips, with a bigger menu. It could get super rowdy an might not be your thing. I’m only here to watch a game, as long as you don’t mess with me, I won’t mess with you. I’ve never had any sandwiches here, I know they have these value combo, with sandwich/fries/drink. Drink can be upgraded to a small draft for $ 2.50. either order a beer or two and a harvest or chef harvest salad. That depends on if I want to eat protein or not. For like $ 7 you get this giant salad with romaine, red cabbage, carrots, seeds, two dinky slices of tomatoes, hard boiled egg, edamame, corn, cranberry. That’s pretty good for a $ 7 salad. Hell, if you’ve never made your own salad with that much ingredients, you don’t know the pain of shopping for that many items, chopping(if any), and compiling. The price is worth the laziness! Chef harvest is $ 2 more, I tried their tri tip, a bit too salty but not too bad for giving it to me medium. This salad is pretty big, one of the few rare ones that would fill you up.

Stopped by for a burger and a quick pitcher of suds with friends. It was a pre-party of sorts, as we were headed to the Bowl for a crazy line-up that included DJ Shadow, Dilated Peoples, and Jurassic 5. I knew what I was in for(hint: it’s a sports bar), so I didn’t have any lofty expectations. Bros, beers, burgers: really that’s what I found. The sweet potato fries were exceptional. The show, though, was killer.

I’ve gotten burgers here to go. They have a nice 5 dollar student lunch special everyday which is a plain burger, medium fries, and a medium drink. Quite a steal. The burger patty was well seasoned but it’s a plain hamburger– a value for 5 dollars still. I’ve also ordered the bacon cheeseburger which came out to 8 bucks, so too expensive for now. The only thing I hate about this place is the sucky tacos on taco Tuesday. They taste like arm pit. Dry and not seasoned. Service is fast and when games are on, it gets loud.

3÷8÷15 8:30pm Sunday evening, I walk in to get some grub because I’ve heard good things about this place. So I order a avocado burger and asked for it to be medium rare(mistake number 1) as well as cheese fries to go with it(mistake #2) I also asked for a side of Mac and Cheese(mistake #3) 20min later I get a call that my order is ready, so I look at everything and the first thing I noticed was that the mac and cheese was just straight mac… I even give it a taste before I bring it to my table. Then I politely asked the Hispanic cashier lady if I could get more cheese on it because it was dry AF. She rolled her eyes and asks her cook if they could add more cheese in Spanish. He then responds and she then tells me that they make the Mac and Cheese in the MORNING, so beware for those who crave Mac and cheese in the evening because that shit is not fresh, and I feel sorry for the next person who orders it late. I then proceed to bite into my avocado burger… it was HAMMERED. Over cooked like a mofo. And the cheese fries I expected would come with FRESH melted cheddar, but instead to add to my disappointment they added NACHO cheese instead, so you get that fake rubbery imitation cheddar taste with a hint of spicy to it… my $ 16 meal was absolutely disgusting and I am very very very so disappointed with the food they serve here. Please teach your hot line how to cook and your cashier to smile and be polite and not give attitude! Perhaps just stick to making drinks pappy

One of my friends posted on their various social media websites that they have come with their friends to eat, hang out, and watch the various sports matches on the big screen televisions here at Pappy’s Grill and Sports Bar. It is named after the winningest Cal Football Coach, Lynn«Pappy» Waldorf. Here is the 411 on him: I remember when this used to be Blake’s a long while back. It was known for having live performances in the evenings. Regretfully, I never had the pleasure of experiencing Blake’s. I stopped by here for a bite to eat and to do some readings for class on a rainy day before the peak lunch hours and lunch rush. It was not crowded, it is definitely a sports bar. It certainly has the look of an upscale sports bar. I immediately felt comfortable here. I was in the mood for ribs, so I got myself a combination platter of ribs, potato salad, and cole slaw. The ordering process was pretty simple. One places their orders at the till and are given a number. When the number is announced, the customer picks up their order from the counter. The meal was pretty good to satisfy an appetite on a rainy afternoon. The meat pulled off of the bone with the fork, knife, and or teeth. The potato salad and cole slaw were pretty good though I must say I definitely loved the potato salad best. I would consider coming back to Pappy’s Grill and Sports Bar. I will plan on trying other offerings, yet must have the potato salad. Bön appetit! SYOY! Ciao!
