Being a teacher, and having foolishly checked the «10 month» box instead of the «12 month» box for my salary distribution, I have found myself looking like the Edvard Munch painting as I realize I’m rapidly approaching 2 months with no income. (hey, cut me some slack, I had a second p/​t job at the time I did the checking, one where there was more work during the summer.)
With that in mind, I applied for a summer job at the SB YMCA., since they have an academic component to their summer program. I visited for the first time, and was blown away by this place. You could eat off the floors, every game and toy was in its proper place, and they took pride in mentioning that their computer room, which was pristine, had every bit of furniture the way it had come to them 10 years ago.
There was a clear commitment to the kids they were serving, and everyone I spoke with was a gem, especially their Director, who is Robert Brower’s widow. In an environment where squalor is tolerated, South Berkeley YMCA is an oasis of loving, conscious alternatives. Bless their hearts.
Oh, and… KNOW OF ANY 2-​month JOBS that pay more than 10 bucks an hour?!?
