I am writing this in response to the review that was posted on the Unilocal website on May 15, 2011.
The review was posted by a person whom I have never seen, met, or spoken with. She has never been a client. I will not take the liberty of guessing publicly at her motives.
The reviewer's comments did not merely resonate and then fade away in some obscure corner of the world--they are posted for anyone who is using the Internet to attempt to assess my character and competence.
How does one respond honorably to defamation? I wrote two respectful letters to the author, offering to meet with her at any time and place that was comfortable for her, and in the presence of any others she would want to have present. Because we have never even met, I asked her to at least temporarily remove her posting as a courtesy to me until we could talk in person. I have received no response. I am still open to a meeting.
Many people do not consider very carefully the consequences of their words. To knowingly make untrue statements with the intent to damage another's reputation is calumny. It is equally reckless to post destructive words when one has made no credible effort to determine firsthand whether one's words are true.
Perhaps the higher road is to just ignore such postings and move on, to "act in such a way that if others speak ill of you, no one will believe them." At least ninety percent of my work originates from unsolicited referrals, so I'm probably doing something right. Still, it doesn't feel right to leave such a destructive statement unaddressed.
With the rise of the Internet, it is now possible to sow great destruction in new ways. Authors do not have to take responsibility for their words. Their statements continue to spread doubt and cast false shadows in the minds of people they have never met. Words have consequences.
