In southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, WAUS is the only full-time classical station available. I really enjoy listening to this station when I am driving through the area and while staying at my lake house near White Pigeon, MI. I am a big fan of classical music, and I am very thankful for this station. It is an oasis in a sea of commercial talk, rock, and pop broadcasts. If you’re traveling along the Indiana Toll Road, the coverage area of WAUS extends from approximately Michigan City to La Grange, IN. Reception is best in the South Bend area. I find that listening to classical music helps relax me when I’m out on the road. WAUS operates on a tight budget, funded mainly by contributions from listeners, local businesses, and Andrews University. Over the past few years, they have struggled with failing audio processing and transmitting equipment and the quality of the on-air signal has been marginal at times. Some of the announcers are regular staff members, while others are students at the university. They don’t always pronounce the names of the composers and musicians correctly, but having live announcers is a luxury that few stations, commercial or otherwise, can offer. During the summer months, the station sponsors the«Second Sunday» series of live, outdoor concerts at the Fernwood Botanic Garden in Niles, MI. These concerts are presented in a beautiful outdoor setting and are about 40 minutes in length. Admission to the Garden is free for these events.
