What an awful experience my fiancé and I had here this past weekend. We celebrated our engagement party in Berthoud at my fiancé’s parents’ home, and they treated us to a night at the b&b. A nice welcoming gesture is that the owner puts a «welcome, ____!» on the front door for all incoming guests that day, except he got our names wrong, and put Kathryn and Keith, instead of Christine and Kevin, and was also not home when we arrived, and we had to wait outside for 20 minutes until he came home. He was pretty sour showing us around(we stayed in the Oriental room, which was fine enough, except for the slightly ignorant name), and had a normal day. We were abruptly awoken the next morning at 4:45am by the sound of bursting pipes/water hoses/obnoxious water whistling WILDLY in our room, which was apparently just the neighbors showering. The walls are very thin, and we could not sleep the rest of the night. Do not stay in the Oriental(Asian) room. And lastly, but most importantly(and disturbingly), my future mother-in-law both called and emailed Mark several days before we arrived to explain that I have type 1 diabetes, a chronic disease that involves diligent dietary restrictions and monitoring. I didn’t ask her to call, but it was a sweet gesture, and even though I don’t normally like people making accommodations for me, it was a nice thought. She simply asked him if he had any low sugar or low carb options, and that I cannot eat bread or fruit. Additionally, we filled out the breakfast form the day before, and I said I eat eggs or oatmeal for breakfast. The meal that arrived the next day was lavishly, carb-filled sugar bomb that I simply could not eat without getting sick. I sipped my coffee and we left for the morning to get something that I could eat out on the town(Da Bean is AWESOME for breakfast). I let it go, because I don’t like calling attention to myself much, especially when it comes to my chronic condition. Other people don’t live by my standards, and that’s okay. EXCEPT when we came back from our run into town, Mark cornered us in the foyer of the b&b, and started reprimanding us because I didn’t eat my breakfast, and then continued to insult me because I have diabetes and have special dietary restraints. I have never been so insulted or embarrassed! I was willing to let the issue go, until he yelled at us and made me feel horrible. PEOPLEWITHDISABILITIESARENOTWELCOME is what the front door sign should say, it would be more applicable and correct(instead of the incorrect names you posted for your guests). I get that he may be a sous chef, but people have had allergies and chronic conditions for hundreds of years, and it is not hospitable at all to not make any accommodations(when you asked for them on the breakfast sheet? Why have a preference sheet, then?), and then you berate and belittle your guests. Horrible! We checked out and did NOT stay the second night we paid for. He is awful, vile, and should not be an inn keeper.

We found this little gem by chance, and it was the best place we stayed on our trip. The Victorian-style B&B is beautifully furnished with theme rooms, and lots of little details make your stay comfortable, relaxing and wonderful. The place is spotless. We stayed in the Oriental Room, and the room was cozy, with large, luxurious towels in the bathroom and good water pressure in the shower. Instead of normal generic bath soap, there was locally handcrafted soaps with essential oils. Rooms have free WIFI and satellite TV. Little candy dishes filled with cinnamon red hots or M&M candies are located in places to help yourself. Mark is a most gracious host, even leaving beers in the fridge to help oneself if a person so chooses. We had been told that Mark is a gourmet chef, and his breakfasts were certainly the highlight. Everything was spectacular. It’s a 3-course affair, and includes a scrumptious dessert with ice cream! Dessert for breakfast!!! Yum! He was also graciously accommodating when we told him we didn’t want meat, and served us wonderful salmon dishes instead. We stayed a day longer than planned because it was so relaxing. I would make sure to come back to this charming inn on any future trips to Colorado. Or maybe make that a destination in itself.
