Perhaps the one star belongs to us for not taking advantage of the bountiful buffet offerings. We just were not that hungry so we ordered off the menu, and it turned out to be a poor decision. Service was slow, drinks were not refilled, and our burgers were not good. We would not return, but if we ever found ourselves there again, we would have to spring for the buffet.

OMG! This place is amazing. Come hungry because the servings are huge! There are buffets as well, breakfast and lunch at least. We were there during the change out. We chose the menu route. Wife ordered and omelet and I ordered liver and onions. Neither of us could finish. The plate is over flowing with food. But it was so good we tried and left with over flowing bellies. If you’re in area I highly recommend this place.

If you are in the mood to eat poor people food, this is the place. Buffett is full of fried food: chicken, mashed potatoes, canned green beans mixed with fatty bacon. But, alas, the generally obese clientele love it. The food from the menu takes a long time. But was ok. Omelet and cheese sandwich. Nothing fancy. Friendly staff. Clean facility.

This is one of the few places to stop & eat between Des Moines & Kansas City that isn’t fast food. This place is definitely small town dining. It is cozy & old fashioned. The buffet is not too bad. Just simple country cooking & a decent salad bar. The ham was pretty darn good. They bring out a huge basket of massive rolls to the table. I wish they tasted as good as they looked. They didn’t taste homemade. The sweet, cinnamon butter they bring with them is tasty though. My favorite thing at this place was the chocolate cookies with a surprise: peanut butter filling! They were AMAZING!

After a long day traveling, we stopped at Toot Toots for dinner. We both got the buffet. He had catfish, mashed potatoes, bbq chicken, green beans, and dessert. I had fried clams, BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, and a salad. We also had a few hush puppies. I described it to my husband as like being at family’s house for a holiday meal. It all tastes homemade. It was great. They had a huge selection on the buffet plus a separate menu if you wanted something other than buffet, including an all day breakfast menu. We had a sweet and attentive waitress(Tina) who checked in on us regularly and made sure our drinks were always filled. We travel this route on our way to see family so we will be back.

Driving to Kansas City from Iowa we stopped here for a late lunch. I prefer salad and he prefers meat and potatoes. I was pleased with the VERY fresh salad bar with locally grown produce(large slices of homegrown tomatoes! Yum!!). He declared the BBQ worthy as well Excellent homemade yeast rolls and sweet cornbread. A delicious meal, friendly efficient service and the place was very clean. All at very reasonable prices! I’d recommend the Toot Toot to anyone.

My husband and I have seen the sign for Toot Toot Family Restaurant so many times, debating on whether to stop or not, and drove past. This time, on our way to Kansas City, we decided to stop. We were hungry and needed a break. I read the other reviews which really sealed the deal for us. We were not disappointed! We both had the buffet, home cooking at it’s finest! A U-Hail truck pulled into the parking lot, but then left. Big mistake, I thought to myself. They have a sign by the cashier that says«everything for sale, except the cook» I know why! We will definitely stop again, and highly recommend that if you have a chance, you should too!

Food was wonderful. Got chicken tender basket to share with my three year old. Service was not so great. This was my first time at toot toot, therefore I didn’t know what the options were. When the waitress asked if I wanted the buffet or to look at a menu, I asked her how much the buffet costed. She replied«I don’t know, like ten dollars or something, and kids buffet is like five or six dollars or something like that.» Every conversation we had with her, she seemed like she really didn’t know what she was doing. She never asked to refill our waters, and never asked if we wanted any sauce with our baskets. The woman working the cash register, however, seemed much more polite and like she actually knew what she was doing.

Family Restaurant and a pancake comes with whipped spread and not butter? Disappointing!

Service was great, be sure to try the corn bread with their special blended butter. Just a good place to get a good old fashion meal.

We stopped here for the second time in the last couple years. Once again, it was a very pleasant experience. Quality food and a very helpful, friendly staff. The mashed potatoes were amazing. I could of eaten a plate of them. Diverse selection for your salad, also.

Amazing and reliable food for the middle of nowhere. It’s a great pit stop between Kansas and Iowa and you don’t have to drive miles into the countryside for it. We had the buffet there plenty of times: the meat was often delicious and always varied, and their red skin-on mashed potatoes are simply outstanding. Cobblers and pies aren’t my thing, but the dessert bar was well-stacked and popular. Great wait staff and there’s often someone tending to the buffet. Four stars because veggies and variety at the salad bar could be better.

What can I say about a restaurant whose walls are bare particle board? I guess I could day they are pretty darn good. The have a large breakfast buffet that gets freshly stocked. Everything on it was good. They have a rustic charm with the bare wood walls and the country hunting lodge motif. A definite stop when traveling.

Just say Yes to Toot Toot. You know how diners in the middle of nowhere are basically all the same thing and suck? Well… this place has been open for 30 years because it’s not like that. They have this lunch/brunch buffet there… and I don’t know how to explain it other than it’s everything you could want from a diner, but a little better… and all you can eat. They just had a whole ham on the buffet that you could cut and eat as much of by yourself. They also had breakfast potatoes on there… at lunch… I was waaaay too excited about it. They also had standard salad there on the salad bar… and an incredible home-made like dessert bar. The desserts went on forever and were all incredibly and straight out of the kitchen like you were at grandma’s house. This was a great oasis in the middle of driving throughout the midwest and for where it was and what it was… it’s getting 5 stars from me. Don’t listen to Toot Toot’s haters on Unilocal. If you’re from a bigger city than say… Des Moines… and you’re driving through this«wilderness,» you need to stop in.

Driving home to Kansas City from business in Iowa city is tough, it’s barely better driving than flying but it makes for a long day when you wake up early and work a full day. We just wanted to get home but ¾ of the way decided we’d stop for dinner. With actual reviews from real people, Toot Toot was the obvious choice. This is the place to go when you want to be anonymous and be gluttonous. With two dinner buffets and a desert buffet you won’t have any trouble finding something to eat. The food is as you’d expect it to be, it’s food, and it’s good. There were five of us and between us, everything was tried — they even serve breakfast all day. With a full menu and two buffets, I had a salad — and tater tots(don’t judge). Oh, and they also have a full bar. I ordered a whiskey, neat. I didn’t even try to order a particular kind. What ever I got was better than expected. And it was a nice three-finger pour for 5.50.

As a truck driver, finding a nice meal is rare. This establishment will come retrieve you from the nearby truck stop at no charge. The salad bar includes diced ham, shredded real bacon, shredded chicken, whole green onions, and chunks of pound cake, with stewed strawberries, and whipped cream. The meatballs were decent. A but«done», but tasty. The sliced pork chops on rice had good flavor, but were a bit on the dry side. The red, skin-on mashed potatoes were good, smooth, well kept. The white gravy was probably from a package. Not terrible, but nothing notable. Steamed peas and corn are hard to get wrong. Thankfully, they didn’t. The batter on the fried chicken was thankfully not centimeter thick. The actual chicken(I had a thigh) was moist and tender, and not dry. I observed someone attending to the buffet several times during my visit, including stirring the dishes to alleviate drying out, and adding water to the steam table. Basic things, yes, but overlooked more often than you’d think. Kalani was both my server, and my taxi. They provide ride service at no chargeif they’re not busy. I had a great experience, and would go back again.
