Had a horrible experience with this place. Bought a Groupon for some framing and even with that, they were horribly overpriced. There were no price lists anywhere and the person helping me seemed to pull prices out of the air. I had a small poster(probably around 8×12″) framed in a black aluminum frame and they charged me $ 140 for it. I lived in NYC for 10 years and have larger posters done with a black aluminum frame for $ 25. I was told that the frames would be ready on the 7th. They weren’t finished until the 17th(10 days late) and when I went to pick them up, they were still working on them. I will never use them again.

I had a nice little piece of embroidered work, given as a token gift by a friend who, I think, picked it up at a garage sale — thought of me because of the theme. I was in a bit of a pickle because I needed to display it, lest hurt feelings result, but it certainly wasn’t display-worthy in the yucky frame in which it came. I took it to Meredith and — wow! It is so much lovelier than I would have anticipated — now, in fact, it’s quite a little treasure. And, no, it wasn’t cheap — good framing is never cheap — but it was worth every penny and then some for the years of pleasure it will give me. Thanks, Meredith!

I had two unmounted canvas paintings I’d purchased several years ago from a street artist in Africa framed here through a GroupOn deal. The paintings were in rough shape, but Frame Avenue did a fantastic job on the mounting/framing. I couldn’t be more happy with the results. Also, the husband/wife owners were incredibly helpful both on advising me on glass/frame/matte selection and accommodated my timing constraints. I highly recommend, especially if you can get a deal through GroupOn!

It’s tough to know where to start. I dropped off three items for some straight-forward framing in early August: one involved replacing the old frame and the other two involved putting plain wood frames on two prints. No mats were involved. Three months later, the last item has finally been finished. In addition to being glacially slow(two months for the first round of framing), the quality of the work is mediocre at best — half the corners have gaps that are filled with putty, which is quite visible. The work was so bad on one piece that the shop had to reframe it: during the first round of framing, the wood around one of the corners had split, and rather than take the initiative to immediately redo the frame, the framer instead tried to repair it, leaving a rough and uneven surface held together by wood putty. To add insult to injury, customer service is… kind of missing. They’re poor at returning phone calls. The hours can be unpredictable; I showed up during business hours on a cloudy day when rain was threatening to find the shop closed(they explained later that they didn’t have plastic bags so they sometimes didn’t open when rain was likely. Interesting business strategy…) From the number of frame shops out there and the number of groupons being offered, it’s clear that framing is a pretty competitive business. Judging from the dates on the other Unilocal reviews, I suspect that Frame Avenue is feeling the pinch of competition and taking on more business than they can responsibly handle. I hope they rethink that approach, because nothing will make the customers go away than poor quality and poor service.

This weekend I went to Frame Avenue to get my diploma framed and it was a really nice experience. Meredith — the owner — helped me pick out mats and frames that would be suitable. I liked how she was personable, no BS, and gave me her honest opinion. People don’t realize that framing is expensive(everywhere). I feel that the customer service was worth the money I spent and I would definitely go back. Support small businesses like these.

This framing gallery is definitely much better for people really looking to frame high art rather than something simple like a poster or nice photograph. The owner herself said that they were much more about art, and you could tell by the frames they had to offer that simple would not be the word of the day. I purchased an Amazon Local deal paying $ 50 for $ 150 worth of framing. I definitely needed the help on the price, because this ended up being much, much more expensive than I expected. I was very happy with the job they did, and it was very professionally done, but the price was really high for the job. My family is really fond of movie posters and so I brought one in to get it framed for my mother for Christmas. Even with the busy holiday, she took the job gladly and got it done well within the agreed time. However, I only wanted a very basic, really classy and simple frame for the poster, and they did not have much selection in that department. Somehow, the job ended up being over $ 200 even though it was only a movie poster with one of their most basic black frames. I know framing is expensive in the DMV area, but even for the location that seemed an inordinate price. I’m giving them 3 stars because they did do a really nice job. However, I am tempted to go with 2 stars because of the ridiculous price considering the job. If you have really incredible art, bring it here. But if you want a simple job done, go somewhere else… this is not the place for you.

This husband-wife team has been in business for many years, and I must have driven or walked by their shop 100 times, but it wasn’t until I bought a LivingSocial deal that I had the opportunity to meet them. Meredith and Thomas do fantastic work and are creative and friendly as well. For example, Thomas helped me pick out a frame made of old-looking distressed wood to perfectly complement the linen texture and agricultural content of a ~100 year old patent drawing of my grandfather’s. It looks fantastic. I’ve now had four pieces framed by them and can say that their execution is flawless. Anyone who has used professional framing services knows that the cost of framing is often surprisingly high, and Frame Avenue is no different. But if you live in DC or Montgomery County and want a thoughtful and reliably good product, I highly recommend this team.
