I’ve found the down side to Elm St. Hardware. You can’t count on them to be consistently open. I love the store, the owners are great, it’s a much nicer shopping experience than Home Depot, and it’s actually cheaper most of the time, but I’m tired of going down to the store and finding a note on the door saying that they’re not there. First they closed early for dog training. Then they were closed for a funeral. And yesterday there was a note on the door saying that they changed their Sunday hours and were closing at noon. All this happened just in the last few months. I’m glad to support local businesses but it’s helpful when the business understands that the locals are going to give up when a store isn’t open consistently. Sorry, I don’t think it’s reasonable to call them to see if they’re open every time I want to buy something, especially if it’s a time when I’ve already been inside the store buying things. I’ll call a restaurant on a Monday to see if they’re open because it’s common for restaurants to close on Mondays, but a hardware store closing on a weekend afternoon? Really? When do they think I get all those fix-it projects done at home? At 2PM yesterday, I was one of three different people in the parking lot at the same time and I’m pretty sure we all wanted to buy something. Put it on a web site, on a facebook page, and here on Unilocal. And they should apologize for making me go to Home Depot. I’m taking away a star. I still like them and I’d rather go there than the big store, but if this keeps up I might have to start looking at Dupuis a little more closely as an alternative.
