I was trying to stick to my healthy Jessica plan and was feeling very independent — so instead of dining at Fernwood restaurant — I decided to hit up Fernwood General Store. I picked up a massive cucumber, some smoky salsa, a robust looking red bell pepper and an avocado. The guy helping me was extremely personable and even gave me a discount on what looked to be a very ripe avocado. Sunning myself on Fernwood’s front patio — I was proud of myself as I awkwardly dipped my cucumber into the salsa in between bites of my avocado lathered on my home-brought rice cakes. Fernwood truly is a wonderland. They have it all — and this general store — only adds to their magic — with their solid supply of grocery basics. Trust.

My Girlfriend and I stopped at this place two different times. The first time we were just traveling thru and decided to stop here. They have a small eatery inside there store and we both ordered up the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich with steak fries. They have the best tasting sandwiches ever. They also have a full bar inside and seating inside and outside. Inside is a fairly large area with a large fireplace. The general store has just about everything and there is a small camping store next to it, that has just about anything you need for camping or fishing or backpacking. They also have a large camp ground for tents or RV’s and cabins too. The second time we stopped here, is when we rented a room at the Fernwood Resort. We got lucky to get a room just by calling a couple of days before and someone had just cancel out. Probably cause they slept on there bed and the springs were hitting them in the back. We stayed there in August on our way to Crescent City, up in Northern California. Lucky for us we only stayed there one night, cause I woke up with my back hurting from the mattress. You would think they could afford to buy some new mattress every few years? We both had a couple scoops of their Ice cream and it is the best ever, Lappert’s Ice cream. It is made in northern California and in Hawaii. I have only found a few other places that sells that ice cream. The scenery around the area is the best… I am rating this general store and tavern and camping store with five stars, but this rating does not include the Fernwood resort.

My friend and I stopped here on the way home from Gilroy. I noticed the Lappert’s Ice Cream sign and had to turn around and come back. I love the atmosphere of this town and of this building. Lappert’s has been my fave ice cream for years and I ordered the Kauai Pie and the Coconut ice cream in a waffle cone. My friend ordered the blueberry cheesecake ice cream and loved it. The service was very friendly and helpful. I will come back next year, on the way home from Gilroy’s Garlic Festival.

If you are in Big Sur this place is a great place to stop. One stop shop if you will, attached to Fernwood Resort and the Tavern, this general store offers cold beverage, Lappert’s Ice Cream, coffee, drugs(over the counter), candy, gourmet chocolate, a few souvenir, soaps and other basics if you are camping nearby and you forgot to bring from home and more. I grabbed some killer pepperminty gum«Jila» that doesn’t stick to my teeth or dental work and they even sell those incense matches that come in cute bright colors in case your poop stinks and you want to cover the smell when you are at a friend’s house(on the counter by the register).
