Terrible customer service. It would have been nice for the employees to stop visiting and offer some help. I prefer Scheels.

You know, I’ve always been a big fan of Cabelas and have spent lots of money there over the years, both mail order and in person at their stores in Salt Lake and Billings. I’ve almost positive that I’ve seen people with dogs in the stores before, but when we tried to carry a 12 week old puppy in the Billing store, we were told we could not do that. I did see a new sign on the door that I’ve not seen before about«no dogs». Not sure what has happened there, but the attitude of the guy at the front ticked me off. It’s not like we were going to set the dog on the floor and let him pee on their clothing racks or something. We just wanted to go in and did not want to leave him in the truck. As a result of the clerk’s attitude, we ended up going to Scheels in Billings and buying the rifle we wanted. Thanks Cabelas for nothing! Billings is kind of a crappy store anyway.

Background: Cross country road trip in full effect with two of my oldest friends as we make our way from Seattle to NYC. Somewhere about the Montana border, my traveling companions decide that buying a knife and hatchet will afford us the much needed protection our adventure is currently lacking. In theory this is a fine idea were we still traveling by covered wagon. In reality it’s the 21st century and while it speaks volumes that I was able to wander aimlessly about Cabela’s for 2 hours without being overcome by extreme boredom as my friends hemmed and hawed at the knife counter, I wouldn’t mind having that part of my life back. The whole experience played out as an exercise in theory vs. reality… Theory: Buying a hatchet with intentions of pulling off the highway, venturing into the woods and throwing it at some poor unsuspecting tree as it kneels before us on its roots and branches, begging not to be sent to the lumberyard. vs. Reality: Hatchet still safely contained in its original packaging when we arrived in NYC. Theory: A hatchet would make a useful souvenir from the trip that will come in handy around the house. vs. Reality: Coming home to wife bitching about, «buying a stupid axe that is now lying around the house.» Theory: The security in knowing that you’re packing a solid 4″ blade on the subway in case anyone steps to you. vs. Reality: Getting shanked while trying to remove knife from pocket and being stymied by your decision to buy the model with the blade safety lock because the fear of slicing your scrotum open walking down the street was more compelling than the idea of being able to quickly open the blade at the time of purchase. Theory: Cabela’s is the place to go if you’re into killing, camping, hiking or some other means of interacting with nature. vs. Reality: Welcome to your outdoor life wet dream. — Cliff Notes Version: Redneck utopia.

So, when I travel on my annual trip to Montana/Wyoming for fly fishing I also camp back country. Grizzly activity has been higher the last couple of years, so I take a firearm with me when I go now, but cannot transport everything I need before hiking backcountry and this Cabela’s was a good place to pick up some provisions. For this visit I needed some very powerful ammo for my handgun, camp cooking fuel, and camp food. I was able to acquire my ammo and fuel, but since Sturgist bike rally was going on bikers had cleaned out the camp food… so I had to go to another store for those supplies. But the people were VERY helpful and showed me where to find what I needed quickly. Funny, the first review says this place is small… didn’t seem that way to me — hence why the folks working there were such a big help.
