AMAZING great food, I think I have found my taco heaven the salsa is tasty, and the selection of fruit flavored water is very nice(horchata, cantaloupe, Jamaica, tamarind, pineapple) all great, and much better than soft drinks. The prices are good too, definitely worth the price and great service too

Best tacos around, and the $ 10 torta cubana is a sandwich big enough to feed two adults. Affordable and delicious food, and friendly service. Pozole and menudo available on weekends. Combining a bakery, taqueria, and tienda, Gordos is a one-stop shop for all your Mexican food needs. Grab a couple or three tacos and a Jarritos soda for a quick, cheap, and satisfying lunch; you’ll be glad you did. Crowded at lunchtime, but the service is amiable and efficient.

We found this place somewhat by accident while passing through Birmingham, and will definitely be back whenever possible! My husband had a carnitas burrito, which was huge, and some homemade tortilla chips. Chunky, spicy guacamole is provided on the salsa bar, and he wolfed it down with the chips. The salsa bar also had a couple of red salsas, tomatillo salsa, creamy salsa verde, mild pickled jalapeños, and delicious roasted onions that went wonderfully on all of my tacos. There were tons of drinks, too — in addition to the soda fountain and a cooler I didn’t pay much attention to, there were five flavors of punch(melon, citrus, pineapple, horchata, and something dark red.) I had tacos with carnitas, chicken, and some kind of brains. Each was served on a double layer of tender tortilla. The brain meat was an accident — even though I knew perfectly well what«cabeza» means, I asked about it at the counter anyway and was told the taco would contain beans. Beans are frijoles, but I ordered it anyway on the assumption that it was a slang term referring to beans’ and heads’ spheroid shapes. Nope! The brain taco tasted good but was too greasy for my suburban tastes, so I got a second round of carnitas. Moral of the story: Use your cabeza.

Now this is authentic Mexican food! The chorizo is 2ND to none whether you’re ordering tacos from the restaurant side or ordering it by the pound from the butcher case. I love Tex-mex as much as the next guy but when you want real Mexican food that is the best, this is the place to go. Seating is awkward and limited so I suggest you get it to go. Which, from what I can tell, that’s what their going for. Not a nice sit down meal. Just chow and go or get it to go. The small, simple menu is in Spanish so don’t be afraid to ask questions. I would recommend this to anyone.

I don’t think is possible to find anything more legit than this place! The place is actually split in a market, a taco restaurant, and a bakery. The market has sells the best tortillas in town, not to mention that they actually sell FRESH tortillas, that I would strongly recommend to buy. The taco joint is just great. The meat is super fresh and the condiments are many and delicious. The bakery doesn’t look anything exciting, but give it a try and you’ll be surprised of the uniqueness of the taste. We bought a chocolate cake slice and it was just delicious, something you can’t taste anywhere else. There are chances they won’t understand your english, so try to be patience and appreciative of the uniqueness of the place!

The tacos are very tasty. They are served on two corn tortillas with queso fresco and whatever salsa you wish to put on. Tortillas are made on premises, and, are good. It is a bit hot inside and it is pretty drab and beat up. There is a place to eat outside. Store has a good health rating. Everyone was helpful, even if not engaging. But, if you make an effort, you will find them friendly and responsive. This place will give you a chance to brush up on your Spanish. It is different, and, we like variety in life. So, I will be back.

My friends and I were wanting some good authentic tacos. I came across this place on Unilocal and decided to give it a shot. It was a great pick! Tacos are cheap($ 2) and I enjoyed the self-serve bar with the different salsas and options to put on your taco. Overall, great experience and I will definitely be back! I might try the bakery they have attached next time too!

Great tacos – I like the self-serve bar for the toppings :) The aqua frescas are slightly too sweet for me, but okay overall.

«Chubby’s» or «Fat One’s» for those Unilocal friends that don’t speak Spanish is a must-visit Mexican dining option in Birmingham. It’s not just your normal chips and salsa sit down Mexican place with pretty good food(Don’t get me wrong, I love those, too). This restaurant/bakery/grocery store has a bit of a fresher and more personal feel to it; the restaurant is actually in the middle of the 3. They have lots of great options, and you might feel a little uncomfortable if you don’t know Spanish, or aren’t so familiar with the cultural norms. Immersion into another culture in the heart of all things international that is Valley Ave. This place is the pinnacle of Latin America, and the food was very tasty. Like I think somebody else said, the tacos are basically the same level as the taco truck just a mile or two East down Valley. Get some tasty tacos, top them with your choices from their toppings bar, and feel free to buy a huge bag of real tortilla chips for $ 2.00 to go along with your meal. The salsa options are dang hot; just saying. Also, check out the bakery upstairs and the market downstairs. They’re all connected inside, but I’m sure the ownership is slightly different.

I just moved from Texas and I have been really unimpressed with the Mexican food in the Bham area but luckily a fellow Texan took me to Gordo’s for a fix and I’m so glad he did. This is really authentic, yummy Mexican food. I got 3 tacos lengua, pork, and chicken… put salsa, lime, and cilantro on there and I was transported to a taco shack on the beach in Jalisco. Ugh! So good I can’t wait to go back!

In the spirit of Cinco De Mayo, I was craving horchata today. I had an incredible glass of horchata in Brooklyn last summer and wanted some of that here in Birmingham. After a little Unilocal searching, I decided to try out Gordos for the first time. They gave us a glass and we filled it up ourselves. The flavor was pretty good, but it wasn’t as thick as the one I had before and it was a little sweeter than my liking. Loved the cinnamon flavor though. The environment was great and everything they had looked delicious. Would definitely go back for a horchata again, but definitely want to try their food!

This is the only place in the state of Alabama that actually has good authentic Mexican food. Don’t be fooled by all those fake place that say they serve authentic mexican food because they dont! I tried just about every mexican place I could find and nothing comes close to this!!! Nothing!!! Thier huaraches can get expensive and a lot of their groceries are expensive but worth it!

This place has it all… the atmosphere is fun, but not something that some could handle. It is very authentic Mexican, where they make the food right in front of you. There is meat everywhere; cooked and raw. It is loud and hot, with minimum décor, but MAXIMUM flavor. It is the most authentic Mexican food I’ve had in Birmingham, maybe EVER! The prices are amazing for the amount of food that you get. Usually it’s cheaper even than Taco Bell, and WAY better!!!(Taco Bell is the Dollar Tree of Mexican food…) There are no frills when it comes to the dishes. If you want frills, there is a bar to the side where you can spice up your dish. From fresh cilantro and limes to Habanero sauce that will make even your feet sweat, there is something for the weak and the strong. I wish I had discovered this sooner. MY tummy and life will never be the same!

Like Scott said, Gordo’s is one of the better, more authentic Mexican taqueria’s in town. It also has a bakery in the back. Supposedly they make their own tortillas but they don’t taste particularly housemade. Their carnitas are the best in town(better than El Mercado at corner of Greensprings and Valley). They also have a lot of the standard latin meat choices as the other reviewer said plus an awesome salsa/condiment bar. And you can have a Mexican coke to go with your tacos(or horchata, etc). The bakery is good for desert too. Tacos about on par with Guzman Taco Truck. Sometimes I get a lb of carnitas to go to make tacos, nachos, etc. at home.

This is the best place that I’ve found so far in the Birmingham area that serves authentic Mexican food. You will not find ground beef tacos with shredded cheddar cheese on a flour tortilla here. You may very well be the only native English speaker in there at any given time. You will find tacos, gorditas, quesadillas and different daily specials with meat options like head meat, tripe, pork skin, bbq pork, etc. If you want legit tacos and other Mexican specialties, then look no further than here or the one in Helena.
