Probably the best Chinese food in Birmingham! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Although, the tables doesn’t smell the best it didn’t take away from our experience.

I have considered moving to the 280 side of town because it is closer to work and church, but I stay because of New China. Seriously the best Chinese place in Birmingham!

New China offers fair amounts of great food at a reasonable price. The crab rangoons are fantastic, and the steamed dumplings are easily the best I’ve ever had. Both the house lo mein and the sesame chicken were also delicious and very filling. Furthermore, the chicken bits were portioned perfectly in bite-sized pieces, which is an unfortunate flaw of other restaurants. I highly recommend this place.

I use to get takeout here all the time, only live about 5 minutes away. Not sure what happened but after reading reviews here yesterday I was ready to try them again. First, the nice lady that runs the place has been there a long time. She is a real pistol and has been compared to the soup nazi on Seinfeld, and with good reason. Don’t mince your words, don’t try any chit-chat, just pay, grab your food and get out. I told her that she has quite a reputation online, she laughed just a little and looked at my bag of food as if to say that I needed to leave immediately. But she really is very nice, and all business. I called in my order, which was a trip unto itself. A man answered, thought I had dialed the wrong number. So I ask for two of the shrimp egg rolls, he says we don’t do those any more. So now I know that some of their menus shown online are incomplete and outdated. He put her on the phone quickly and I changed it to spring rolls with an entrée of the house lo mein. I asked her if they could make it spicy, she said yes, I said ten minutes and it wasn’t a , she hung up in a split second… as I said, don’t mince words, it’s all business. The spring rolls were very good, quite crispy with substantial filling. I made my own mixed sauce of the red sweet and sour goo and the crazy hot mustard. Get the mustard packets if you don’t want your sinuses singed to H and back. I really like the hot mustard but it’s not for everybody. The house lo mein was to die for… chicken, beef, very tender pork, and a few shrimp here and there. It wasn’t very spicy by my standards but that was OK. I have all kinds of hot sauce at home and just spiked it up a little myself. It didn’t need any soy sauce, was lightly seasoned and they used just the right amount of oil, was not greasy in any way. The noodles were cooked perfectly, just barely past al dente. I’m telling you this was enough lo mein to feed 3 people easily, a monster container spilling out the top which could not be closed, they had to put it in a plastic bag and tie it off at the top. I’m only awarding the four stars at this point, but may change it to five if it is this good on future visits. I really like getting quality food at a decent price, I’ll be back soon.

Went here hoping to get some good Hot/Sour soup. Didn’t find it. It was easy place to find, service was great and smiles behind the counters. Second place in BHM that was well reviewed on Unilocal,so I was excited to go. The food was bland. I actually tried to doctor it up when I got home, never had to do that before. It was just warm food, with no taste to it. Maybe it was just my timing as alot of people seem to enjoy it. I might just need to ask someone working there, where they would go and eat Chinese food as I don’t see it in the patrons eating here. Still searching.

We get take-out from New China at least twice a month and have for years. The food is consistently good with lots of choices. My son is devoted to their fried rice(either beef or shrimp), while my husband and I each get an egg roll or spring roll and split an entrée. My favorites include orange beef, Mongolian beef and moo shu pork — although we run out of pancakes if we share the latter. Love the crab rangoon too if I’m splurging. Always hot, always flavorful, always ready in minutes, always acknowledged with the same monotone, somewhat strident voice of the owner who is the endearing heart and soul of the operation. Another reviewer claimed New China has a cult following, and it’s true. When the restaurant was shut for a few weeks earlier this year when the family visited China, my husband joked that he expected tents to start sprouting on the sidewalk outside as loyal patrons awaited their return. A coworker mentioning«New China» brings flocks of people to her desk to swap stories of the proprietor as well as rave over the food. It’s must-try.

Excellent restaurant for Chinese food. They serve large portions at very reasonable prices. We drive 30 miles to eat here and it’s well worth the drive.

Great food, had the shrimp fried rice and crabragoon’s. A lot of good tasting food. Will be back but for take out. Dinning room way to small for the good food.

New China has a cult following! The Chinese food rates as some of the best I have ever eaten. We both dine in & take out. My wife & I split a dish, it is always enough for both of us. Several years ago, a competitor opened a Chinese buffet in a neighboring shopping center. WRONGMOVE! They didn’t last six months… such is the loyalty of the local clientele. If you are within 20 miles of New China, it is worth the drive!

We’ve been dining on their takeaways for many years. Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking and this is a few hundred yards from my house. We like the Kung Pao Beef but also like Mongolian Beef, lo mein, and fried rice. Stay away from the«pot stickers» and enjoy most everything else.

Seriously, this place is so good. So consistent, so tasty, so fresh. Kung pao is awesome, won ton soup is very savory(most are so bland!), lo mein is great, it’s all really good. No wonder this place is always busy… Which is so awesome.

I am hesitant to give a 5 star review because I don’t want to share with anyone! New China is delicious. Absolutely delicious. The prices are excellent, and the portions are big enough that two can easily share a dinner entrée. It is our go to Chinese restaurant in Bluff Park and we would recommend them to anyone looking for fresh Chinese.

The people who own this business and who work here are very friendly and are hard workers. Our food was served really hot and properly seasoned. Many times I find restaurant food too salty, but this was not. I had Kung Pao chicken and my wife had sweet and sour chicken. Both were very good and very hot from the wok cooking. The rice had been around for a while and was not good. They serve soup and an egg roll with each order. The soup was good. The egg roll tasted a little eggy. Now I know it is an egg roll, but I consider it a fault when it tastes that way. Usually it means it is not fresh or the oil used in frying was too old. It was very hot, though. Lunch specials are a very good value, and, this is a counter service place which I always like because it is always much less expensive for the same food. We certainly will be going back.

Let me get this out of the way first: the lady who(wo)mans the front counter is Birmingham’s own Egg Drop Soup Nazi(EDSN) in the flesh. If you call in to order, she barks a single word at you: «CHINA!» After this, there’s total silence. The best is yet to come, though: after you finish ordering, she doesn’t ask your name, she doesn’t tell you how much it’ll cost, she doesn’t tell you how long it’ll take. She just hangs up on you ANDREMEMBERSYOUBYTHESOUNDOFYOURVOICE when you come in still reeling from the shock of the encounter. SHE. IS. AWESOME. She really does have some kind of eidetic memory — or must have — because I have personally witnessed her taking orders, wrapping other to-go orders, and cooking SIMULTANEOUSLY. Oh, and she’s incredibly friendly in-person. And as for her food? It’s some of the best Chinese in the area. It’s not the best Chinese I’ve ever had — not even close — but it’s very good for what it is. My wife is absolutely addicted to their fried rice(any variety) and their dumplings. I’m a huge fan of the Kung Pao Chicken. DId I mention that I’m an even huger fan of EDSN? In summary, this is the first Chinese takeout place I’ve ever ordered from where the staff are a(much) larger attraction than the food. And that’s saying something, because the food’s pretty good. ALLHAILEDSN!

There is no better Chinese takeout in Birmingham. Great food, good value, fast service. The lady up front is very talented, she can cook, take orders, and make change at the same time…

Bluff Park is definitely lucky to have New China around. It is THE go-to for every parent that has ever burned dinner and needed a quick, delicious option. I’ve never eaten in here. It’s just so small inside, I’ve never really considered it a dine-in restaurant. That’s ok. It totally serves it’s purpose as a quick take out place with huge portions.

Having grown up in Bluff Park, New China is absolutely the only place to get Chinese food. My family never ate out at restaurants when I was a kid, but we sure got New China when we got take out. I didn’t know that people actually ate AT New China(or in restaurants for that matter) until I was a teenager, but that’s beside the point. The woman who works the front register has been there since the shopping center was built and is a total firecracker. Every time my dad places a to-go order on the phone, he doesn’t even have to say who he is — «THANKYOUMARK, 10MINUTES». She always knows that large orders of sweet and sour chicken, house lo-mein, and mongolian beef is my dad. The funny thing also is that no matter who picks up the order(whether it’s me, my mom, my dad, or any of my sisters) when we walk in, the lady at the front will yell«OHHELLOMARK!». I think it’s awesome that after so long(10+ years), she still remembers us. The sweet and sour chicken is always super crispy on the outside and doesn’t come coated in the typical orange sauce — it’s always on the side so you can pick how much you want on your portion. The house lo-mein has chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp mixed in with the best lo-mein I’ve ever tasted. Maybe it’s more nostalgic for me, but I think it’s the right mix of greasy and flavorful. The mongolian beef is a little too tough and not as tasty as it has been in the past, but it’s edible. I’ve eaten at what feels like hundreds of Chinese places all over the country, but New China will always been my «home» Chinese place.

I love going here for lunch… and I mean love. The lady up front is hilarious. It’s like the soup nazi from Seinfeld but not mean. She answers the phone in such a hurry all she says is «CHINAAA» It cracks me up every time. The name is New China. who doesn’t have time to say«new» ??? And when you call don’t waste time with words like«Can I place a pickup order?» … just say«Mongolian Beef», she will say«5 minute», and that is all. If you walk in to place your order, there is a good chance she will try to order for you. She is a busy woman and does not have time for you to decide. I went in with two friends who had never eaten there. We walked in and she points at each of us and rattles off…“Mongolian Beef, Sesame Chicken, Orange Chicken!!!” We soaked it in for a second, and said«…ok» Lunch is the way to for value. They stop serving it at 3. Most specials are under $ 6 after tax. Huge portion of meat and rice, delicious egg roll and hot and sour or egg drop soup with crispy noodles. Mongolian beef and sesame chicken are my favorites. It is two meals every time for me… and if it’s not, I’m too full for the next meal anyway! Go eat… be full… support your neighbors
