If you are visiting the CivilRights complex and need excellent home style carribean food look no further. This place is a gem. Attitude. Flavor. Price. All just plain delicious.

I hate to say it because was really hoping to give this place great reviews but this is what it comes down to. The food was mediocre and the man that works the counter is rude and unhelpful. He acts annoyed that you disrupted his day by coming in his restaurant. I asked if about it being Thursday so did they have the goat dishes which is reply was«we don’t have everything» No information on what they did have. Often he rolled his eyes at any question i. e what type of patties do you have. I’m from the Virgin Island and am very familiar with Jamaican cooking but no West Indian mamma would be proud of the cooking and his personality would surely have earned him a slap. I wouldn’t tell you not to go, it’s fine, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it. It was also my first time there so maybe just a fluke. We had the brown stew chicken and the oxtail. Oxtail wasn’t that tender and had huge chunks of fat and some skin still attached, chicken was overcooked, «peas and rice», didn’t have«peas» and was very bland, even just salt would have helped, the cabbage was fine.

This place is incredible! The jerk chicken is some of the most authentic I have ever experienced. The price can’t be beat and the service is fast and friendly. That is the definition of a good business. Get here!

Best jerk chicken. It is a hidden gem on 4th Ave. The ox tail is also good. Try the beef patties and the spiced buns.

Good food but not amazing. Got two dinner plates for the bf and I, was very disappointed with the Oxtail. Had reeeeeaaaallllyyyyy been looking forward to it and instead of a delicious dinner I received 4(!) bones and 3 skimpy pieces of meat. 7 pieces total right? No. Only if you’re animal that likes to knaw on bones for dessert. Worst part is I didn’t find this out until an hour or so later, when I finally made it home. Had to drive an hour from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa, the whole time anticipating the wonders of this food… I was disappointed to say the least. Of the meat I did receive, it was good, well seasoned and prepared, just scant. Bf had no complaints about his jerk chicken. It was gone before I could get a bite.

I’ve had the oxtail and curry chicken and they were both bland. With the oxtail, the bell peppers were bitter and it was all fat and bones! Being born and raised in Jamaica all I wanted was some authentic Jamaican food and it was definitely below my expectations.

I lived in the Caribbean for a time. This brought me back. The jerk chicken with peas and rice and veggies was spot on — nicely spiced and ample. Friendly proprietor. Inexpensive. Located in a fun, walkable, downtown neighborhood. What more could I want?

It was delicious. Fall off the bone jerk chicken. And the cabbage! Yum! The owner was super nice too.

Nothing to write home about. Brownstew chicken was bland. Jerk chicken was not as authentic as i had hoped. Overall it was a decent experience.

Great spot near the Civil Rights Institute. Had the jerk chicken and tried the curry chicken, too. Both excellent. Laid back, casual atmosphere. Strawberry Fanta on tap. Get some beef patties to go!

My fiancé visited this place with his co-workers a couple of months ago and brought me back a roll of coco bread to entice me to come with him the next time he stopped by. So, last weekend, I made it out. The restaurant was small, but it was bathed in bright colors and adorned with Caribbean pieces of art. As a native South Floridan with some Ire in my blood, it made me nostalgic for home. I went with the Jerk chicken and my fiancé had the curry chicken. And yes, we got more coco bread. The Jerk Chicken: Honestly, it was good, but it didn’t wow me. It was a lot softer in texture and some pieces were spicier than others. I then sampled the curry chicken and was more impressed with that dish. So, I’ll be sure to have that next time. The Coco Bread: Perfection. Heavenly. I would go back just for a baker’s dozen of that amazingness. Finally, we had a chance to chat with the owner of the store. He seemed pretty nice and I appreciated that he had good enough sportsmanship to mention other island restaurants in the area. Still, we will stick with Yehman as it is close to our labs and can give me a small taste of home.

I’m giving this place 5 stars because it does exactly what it sets out to do VERY well. The jerk chicken is awesome! Exactly as it should be. Yes, you will have to spit out bones. It’s chopped chicken pieces. Just like Jamaica. Outstanding flavor and done right — spicy. The rice and beans that came with it were perfect too. Yes, it’s a mom and pop and the ambiance is designed for you to sit down, shut up, and eat some great food. Not propose marriage. Tired of the same old crap? This is a great choice.

Great place to eat in Birmingham! I would recommend it to everyone! I had the curry chicken(yum!) and my boyfriend had the goat(also, yum!). Like others have said before me, it’s a «hidden gem» in Birmingham.

This is a hidden gem of Birmingham. This small establishment may not have a huge menu or a really upscale location but all there food is extremely good. If your looking for some good Caribbean food this is the place to go.

A limited menu, just curry chicken, jerk Chicken, stewed chicken, curried goat, oxtail, and veggies with rice. But for a quick $ 5.99 lunch with meat, rice with beans, veggies and a drink it hits the spot. Portions are generous and seasoning on the curried chicken lunch special were nice. If you are looking for heat go with jerk chicken instead. There were only two detractors besides the limited menu. The atmosphere, let’s be honest the place is a bit of a dump, leaves a lot to be desired. Faded yellowing lights, a mishmash of tables and chairs and slapped on paint job. It is a small hole in the wall, I don’t expect white linens but a little effort goes a long way. The second negative was how they rough chop their chicken and herbs. You are going to be constantly picking out stems and bones from your meal. Is it a huge deal? No. But you are going to find it annoying. If you are in the area looking for a cheap, filling, tasty absolutely no frills lunch, stop in. You will enjoy it.

We came here for lunch last week and both had the jerk chicken, rice and beans and steamed cabbage. It was $ 5.99 each and that included a drink. The chicken was super spicy and and so tender it was falling off the bone. The sides were good too. We’ll definitely be coming back to try their other stuff.

If you’re a fan of Jamaican/Caribbean food, this is a MUST visit in Birmingham! I began coming here years ago(2010) and have never had a bad experience(except when they are out of beef patties lol). Anyway, always friendly staff… No complaints here. The facility itself may be a little off-putting if you were expecting something modern or fancy. I promise you, this hole in the wall will not disappoint however. The food never fails to remind me why the trip downtown from Hoover will always be worth it! You’ll get all of your Caribbean favorites here… Goat, chicken, oxtail prepared how you like… Jerk, curry, stewed. Something for everybody! The lunch special is where it’s at! You’ll get enough meat to possibly have for 2 meals, stewed veggies and rice/beans along with a drink for a great price! Also, if you’re new to Caribbean cuisine, I recommend either a beef or chicken patty as well. I’ve turned countless coworkers and friends onto this place, some familiar with the cuisine, others who weren’t. Hopefully this will end up in your favorites list as well!

A nice little dive with tasty Jamaican comfort-type food. Nothing spectacular, nothing really to gripe about. They have a limited menu but the items on it are tasty, filling, and remarkably cheap. All in all, a good lunch experience if you’re in the mood for something different. Food: The jerk chicken was well spiced and hit a nice balance between sweet and spicy. The brown stew was rich, flavorful, and swimming in a tasty sauce. A shot of spice would have been nice though. The cabbage could have used some seasoning, but that’s nitpicking. For the money(5.99 $ with a drink during lunch), the portions were generous and more than filling. Service/Ambiance: It’s a dive and it looks like a dive — a very no frills diner. Order from the counter and they bring it out. I was there at lunch and it was largely empty. Service was prompt and unremarkable but he wasn’t irritable or rude either.
