The staff are always helpful. They have maps and books for sale and bear canisters for rent. Be nice to the staff, they work really hard to keep us all safe.

Come here (or any ranger station) before backpacking the Sierras.
I make a trip at least once a year to the Sierras. Here at the ranger station, you’ll find:
1. Detailed trail maps (prices vary)
2. Bear canisters for rent ($ 5/​day or week, depending on the season)
3. Wilderness permits REQUIRED for certain trails (free)
The rangers are very well informed and willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Coming from SoCal, Bishop is my go-​to pit stop for gas (much cheaper here than anywhere else).
