Monte Vista Hotel

My husband and I really enjoyed out stay at Monte Vista! It’s within walking distance of the ever-​adorable Downtown Black Mountain and just off the Interstate.
The beds are incredibly cozy and there’s something rather magical about the hotel itself. The only downside I can think of is that the doors are locked after an unspecified hour so we had to phone the front counter several times after returning to the hotel late one night — granted, we were much younger than most other guests we saw… so they may not have a need for 1am entry!
We would definitely stay here again. It’s a great break from Holiday Inns and such!

As for the ghosts we have encountered none. We open the door as we hear footsteps but are disappointed to only find humans, BUMMER!
We hear knockings on the door but we think it’s only the change in pressure as people enter their rooms.
Staff appears friendly, we think they are human.

The bathroom was poorly lit, no iron or ironing board, the water pressure in the shower was terrible. I went to bring my luggage to my car in the morning and the front porch lights were not on. Overall, I would not suggest staying here.

A wonderful gem in Black Mountain. The hotel room was quaint and comfortable, almost a bed and breakfast feel. Small staff on hand due to the offseason, but they were absolutely the best. We truly enjoyed our visit that was originally unplanned. The hotel is wonderfully decorated, filled with local art. Also walking distance from downtown. We opted for the newer part of the hotel (the older is an original schoolhouse that’s been converted… no tvs/​stairs only). You still get the feeling of being in a classic house in the new wing. Your choices of places to stay in the Black Mountain area are limited to budget hotels or this amazing getaway that is clean, has great staff, and is right downtown.

I’m a bit shocked at the mixed reviews after staying here, but my guess is that it may have something to do with being marketed as a hotel and truly being a B&B.
The rooms are tiny — you have room for a bed, a dresser, and to walk around to the bathroom and windows. The closet holds 20 – 30 hangers, more than most of us need for short-​term accommodations, and the bathroom is «frugal» with space, but not tiny.
All of that said — it is quaint, immaculate, and the staff is friendly. There is a restaurant inside, one on the gorgeous back patio, and a full bar, in addition to the spacious sitting room with a fireplace that screams to be stuck in with 8 feet of snow outside. The staff was super helpful and kind and we enjoyed being within walking distance of the shops in Black Mountain.
I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this experience — it was great! Just remember, it’s a B&B, not the Marriott… and that made it twice as awesome!

Clean and friendly staff. However, the rooms were eh. For the price I at least expected some glasses or plastic cups in the rooms to use at the sink. There’s no hair dryer, fridge, or microwave in the rooms so that was kind of a disappointment since those would be nice commodities. No ice machine so just hope someone is awake to ask for some. They also ran out of the fruit and other breakfast items fairly fast in the morning so make sure you get to breakfast asap. Last but not least, they have the WORST shampoo I have ever put in my hair and I’m not a shampoo snob. I’m pretty sure dial dish soap would have been nicer. It made my hair squeaky clean but it for some reason made my hair so much harder to brush and very knotty. It made my hair so weird that I had trouble throwing it up into w pony tail because the texture was like rubber. Hair feels fine after drying. Very hard to explain but just bring your own or try to use the bar of soap maybe. Don’t use the shampoo.

Very small rooms. VERY small shower and bath. Large closet, why? Nice lobby. Nice breakfast. Ac did not work.

We had a wonderful experience at the Monte Vista Hotel. When we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome by the front desk attendant. It wasn’t that «I have to be here and be nice» kind of attitude you may get from chained hotels. Also, Tony the innkeeper, catered to our request promptly and made everything really great. I would definitely recommend this hotel to any of my friends who want a quaint stay with great service. I have read some of the previous reviews and must say pay no mind. These are the kind of people that go to a restaurant looking to complain for the most ridiculous reasons possible and then bash the place when the check isn’t comped and some other free stuff. Again, this place is wonderful.

Terrible experience! I am in town for business and wanted to stay somewhere other than a chain hotel. I prefer small, local owned B and B’s and Hotels. The staff was very unprofessional which caused me to check out after one night. When I walked in the door I was greeted by a gentleman who says to me, «what’s up?» When I respond with, «I’m sorry, what did you say,» the gentleman then says disingenuously, «I said good evening.» This is less than what expect from a hotel’s staff; maybe I expect too much.
The next morning, I drive my car to the front of the building in order to get some complimentary continental breakfast. I walk in the front door and look for the food and I don’t see it. I wait for the employee behind the front desk to finish a conversation with other guests and I ask where the continental breakfast was and she says, «it’s in that room (pointing) but it’s only for guests.» To say nothing about the fact that she assumed I that I was not a guest, when informed her that I was she blamed me for not introducing myself as a guest! I ate, promptly gathered my things in my room and proceeded to check out.
While checking out, I informed the employee the reason I was checking out early. She then said that I was, «thinking things about her that was not true.» She never apologized, but had the unmitigated gall to tell me what was in my mind!
PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Moving to Asheville to the Crowne Plaza Resort for better and more professional service.

Wedding? Rehearsal Dinner? LOOK ELSEWHERE. Let me just say, the groom is not always one to complain, but enough time has passed and I’m still angry at the way this awful party planner SPOKE TO MY MOTHER and my entire family. Made my mother cry over negotiating the rates of this COMPLETELY OVERPRICED menu. Do yourself a favor, don’t waste your time with the hateful service, terrible food options, awful wine choices, and a space that’s not worth the price.

Incredible accomodating! The owner met us personally and help create a menu specifically for us. Beautiful location in Black Mountain, restored historic hotel. The bar/​restaraunt/​lobby have a great feel to it. It reminds me of a bygone era. Love it.

The best part of any small hotel or inn stay is the conversation with the owner or innkeeper. Make sure that you seek out Sue when calling or visiting.

Very cool historic hotel. The rooms are nice and the staff was very kind and friendly. We ate at the restaurant too which had great prices good food.

This recently renovated hotel is nothing like a Holiday Inn, and that’s a good thing! For one thing, they have a resident cat who loves to curl up on your lap and purr. The rooms are comfortable, if a bit spartan: no tv, radio, clock, or phone. But the staff is great, and it’s fabulous sitting on the covered front porch, watching the world go by. We didn’t eat at the restaurant, so can’t comment on the food. But I will certainly stay there again when I’m in the area.

The Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain, North Carolina is the perfect mountain getaway. The hotel opened in 1919 and has a rich history that has progressed along with this quaint little town. It is located right on the outskirts of the downtown area and ranges from $ 125 to $ 200 a night. The rooms have a cozy feel and provide all the amenities needed for a short stay. The palate restaurant comes highly recommended as well. If you’re looking for accommodations in this area you should definitely check this place out!
