Arguably one of the best places for brunch in all of Blacksburg. Great atmosphere, friendly service, unique specials, and great food. They also support other local businesses!

To start off with gillies food is a 4. I love(d) getting the red earth for breakfast. Overall the food is pretty good. The problem is the service as I’ve seen in a few other reviews. Gillies does well because many of the workers are friendly and active community members, but there are some servers who are incredibly rude, I was yelled at outside for giving a 17% tip. I won’t be going back here, sad to say.

Gillie’s is my favorite place in the entire world to have breakfast. I graduated from VT almost two years ago and I still find myself dreaming of it, 300 miles away. Everything on their menu is fresh, delicious, healthy, and affordable. As my boyfriend liked to put it, everything tasted so good that you didn’t even care that it was vegetarian(he’s a carnivore). Something about their honey wheat toast was just indescribably tasty. I’m really not a fan of bread and pasta, but I could eat an entire plate of that. We usually would order anything on the breakfast menu that had potatoes, because let me tell you — those potatoes are to die for. They also offer a variety of fresh juices and interesting finds like grapefruit soda — yum! And the staff is incredibly nice. Everyone is down to earth, courteous, and attentive. I’ve searched high and low for another go-to place for breakfast, but nothing compares. I always find myself saying, «It’s good, but nothing like Gillie’s.»

I like this place. The service is good, there are a lot of tasty sounding vegetarian options, and the atmosphere is lovely. I’ve tried most of the breakfast menu and a few dinner items, and the food is pretty good and most of it is reasonably priced. They also tend to have good live music on the weekends.

Their brunch is delicious and the place is always packed for that time but it’s worth the wait. I love their french toast. However, after 2pm when brunch ends, the place is always dark and deserted. I think their vegetarian menu scares away customers after brunch. So go before 2pm!

Now this is our favorite place to eat, but we only go once in awhile. The food is delicious, and they will make it gluten free, as well as take great care of cross contamination. Oh how I wish all places were like this. The servers are always great too.

The food is filling and some days quite good. Unfortunately the food can not make up for the rude and often brusque staff. The place may continue to draw large crowds but I believe that I will choose other restaurants in the future. I am a person who will always tip over 20%, they were not able to get over 15% from me. I can only assume staff is paid a good hourly rate and does not need tips. In a nutshell; service =2 and food =4.

Love, love, love the brunch here. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, the food is great, the portion big, and the servers make you feel welcoming and at home. Not only that, but the food comes out fast and fresh and delicious, and they cater to vegetarians and vegans. Service is excellent and overall the experience will brighten your day.

Not completely vegetarian. More pescetarian. BUT, also, vegan. Unless you’re in the company of someone who hasn’t had a meal without killing a cow, everyone can be happy here. We were in Blacksburg for a week and had, both, dinner and breakfast here. We would be delighted to come again.

Excellent brunch! I would recommend their brunch to anybody and especially the Gillie’s special. Their potatoes and salsa are both delicious. I haven’t had a poor experience at Gillies. They must have changed their coffee provider recently though. When I was at vt ~2years ago, it was the best cup of coffee I’d ever had. I went back recently and it was underwhelming. Still a good cup of joe but nothing to rave about.

Excellent vegan brunch(not that I am vegan). Amazing pancakes, eggs, home fries, oatmeal, French toast and coffee. Be prepared to wait but it is worth it. Very friendly service too.

Thought the food was average. I had the catfish, very small portion, it was tasty though. They basically fill you up with sides. Wife thought her blackbean burger was good. Service was terrible. Had a new guy that was obviously turned loose WAY to soon. Can’t blame the server, we blame the owner /manager for lack of training.

Get their potatoes all the time! Two of my friends and I came in Saturday morning around 10am and it was packed. The hostess told us that it would be a 20 min wait for a table but had a few open bar seats. Hungry for breakfast we said yes! Phew what luck! Next to us on the bar were a pile of fresh looking loaves of bread. Already excited to order and we didn’t have to wait long to have our order taken despite the morning rush! As we waited for our food, I could peek into a bit of their kitchen where slices of bread were being dipped and grilled for their walnut banana french toast, eggs being cracked and sizzled, and potatoes tossing and turning in the frying pan! It took about 15 – 20 min to have our food arrive. One of my friends got the beautiful french toast, with a side of potatoes, my other friend got the poached eggs dish and I got the frittata. We all loved it! But in short, they have good service even when busy and have excellent potatoes!

Unlikely to find a better veggie brunch place in the country, let alone Blacksburg. I was a regular for 5 years. The Gillies special and the fresh juices are a must have

I came with high hopes for Gillie’s Cuisine, which was recommended both by Unilocal and by locals. I give them all credit for providing hearty fare that draws meat eaters to a vegetarian(ish) restaurant. Alas, though I came twice, I was disappointed each time. The first time, I got the Greek pasta salad. No composed salad here – just an undistinguished(and soggy) amalgam of penne, spinach, and a creamy sauce. Undeterred, I returned for a late breakfast, ordering the spinach florentine with smoked salmon. This was a thin bed of raw spinach, followed by a soggy slice of(beefsteak?) tomato, and then a thin slice of buttered toast topped with smoked salmon, then two poached eggs and a garlicky cream sauce. The sauce was good. The tomato was out of place and of a lesser quality than I would expect at this time of year. It was fine, and I’d probably come here regularly if I lived in Blacksburg. I just didn’t love it. Oh, well.

This is one of the better restaurants in Blacksburg. The brunch is outstanding — I especially like the banana walnut French toast and anything with potatoes. The fresh juices are great too. I always get a carrot Apple ginger juice for me and my son. At lunch, my favorite dishes are the tofu Reuben and blackened catfish sandwich. Both are really flavorful.

Solid down to earth food that has simple ingredients. No meat restaurant. Hipster for the two decades I have been eating here. Great biscuits and breads. Breakfast is best followed by dinner.

Got the south meets southwest catfish and goat cheese grits with a healthy dose of rocket. Add in the Devils backbone Azreal beer and i am delighted with the experience. Mu son had the Tofu reuben and it was inspired. I will say it was good enough that i forgot To take a picture until i was done…

I had lived in Blacksburg for about 4 years and I never once stepped inside of Gillie’s. Personally, the whole appeal of «vegetarian» cuisine just never sounded appealing. I’m a steak and potatoes kind of guy down to the core. However, after not being in Blacksburg for nearly 7 years, I had the opportunity to visit over this past weekend, and my fiancée really wanted to give Gille’s a shot for brunch, so we did. And I was really impressed. Although on the breakfast/brunch menu you won’t find your typical breakfast staples of bacon and eggs or eggs and sausage, there are some alternative dishes available, and all sounded pretty decent. I went with the Red Earth dish, which is their seasoned potatoes at the bottom, topped with scrambled egg(or tofu if you want to go that route) and then topped with salsa(I believe this is home made) with a side of a thick piece of homemade bread. The potatoes were seasoned awesome, the eggs were nice and fluffy, and the salsa really added a nice kick to the entire dish. Overall, super impressed with Gillie’s from my initial experience, and kind of kicking myself that I never enjoyed their offerings while I lived in Hokie Nation.
