A very cool rock Settler’s Rock is the Plymouth Rock of Block Island. It’s just a rock but one with a lot of history. It’s on all the Block Island maps and like Plymouth Rock many people are disappointed when they see it. Yep, that’s it. It’s just a rock. Not even as big as Plymouth Rock but Settler’s Rock does have the names of the first 16 families that settled The Block in 1661. Of course these are the names of the first European families. The Native Americans already living on Block Island might think of Settler’s Rock more as Invaders Rock. Just a rock, but in a real cool place at the end of Corn Neck Rd, the northern most part of the island. You go down a huge hill and the road suddenly stops. The rock is on the right. I seen some entertaining bike crashes at this spot because of the heavy sand, sudden end of the pavement and people on rented bikes they can’t ride. Assuming you survive the trip to the rock you will notice the ocean on both sides and a gorgeous lighthouse right in front of you. The sound, smell and sight of the water is fantastic. This is my favorite place on the whole island. Absolutely pristine and wild. Just a damn rock, but like Plymouth rock it’s the history and the great location that makes it special.
