I’d driven one years ago, and we gifted a snappy red cabriolet ‘fortwo’ last year to the youngest child of dear friends. Though most empty nesters seem to cheer such moments, our friends were melancholy about losing their last child to her first year at Oxford. Now with her smart fortwo, she could pop in more readily for a visit and keep them sated.
A recent trip back home brought this chummy little vehicle up close and personal once again. Those same friends thought the car adorable so added a few to their cache, using them primarily round the property as glorified golf carts. They also take them into town or to London, and guests can grab one for their use whilst visiting.
Aside from the usual concerns about safety and being too small, there’s little to dislike about this clever and pugnacious dynamo. Great miles per gallon, surprisingly roomier than anticipated, decent storage. Even cheekier when one is parking and can just slip into a spot between two cars at a perpendicular angle. It feels like getting away with something. Now they are available Stateside so it will be interesting to see how this takes off. Or not.
Test drive one today, if for no other reason than novelty.
