I’ve found my local home for a simple, traditional Chinese Buffet. Visited on a Fri night, and had the buffet. Staff was very welcoming and attentive. Food was was fresh, hot, and very tasty! Will definitely be back.

Total legit Chinese restaurant. In my book a proper Chinese restaurant should have white pepper in the table salt and pepper shakers. Hunan does! Started with a cup of Hot and Sour soup, right on point, rich and full of flavor. Next was egg rolls, I was happy to see these are hand made on premise not frozen, pre made crap you see more and more. Egg Rolls were right on point and you get 2 with an order. For the main course I had Mandarin chicken. Excellent flavor and made with high quality chicken. I will be back for sure.

Food is delicious and well priced. Also, some of the nicest people in the Twin Cities run this place. Try their lunch buffet — it never fails.

Friendly and efficient staff. Lunch buffet is the best I have been to in the twin cities. Nice variety and fresh. Variety of flavors to choose from and they have all items labeled.

This was terrible! Never been here and stumbled in based on reviews. It was a buffet so I debated on leaving because I’m not a fan of my food sitting out for long periods of time and people rummaging around in it. I should have left. Fried rice was black because of how much soy sauce was in it. Spicy shrimp tasted like ketchup. Sesame chicken was dry, mostly breading, and an indescribable odd taste. The pan fried dumplings could have come off the pan sooner and had less seasoning in the pork inside. The«something» delight not delightful. I don’t feel good(not because I ate too much unfortunately) and can’t get the taste of ketchup out of my mouth. The water was good though.

This place did an amazing job at satisfying my craving for Chinese food for the month. Was greeted by a very friendly waiter — he was probably happy to get some customer since the restaurant was completely empty as is tradition with Asian restaurants during off-hours. We ordered chicken dumplings as a starter and they were excellent. Their main entrees are HUGE, more than enough to share between two people — granted we are health freaks and like to watch our portions, if you like to pig out then you should probably go for one on your own. We got the sesame chicken and it was up to snuff. Very generous serving of steamed rise as well. Don’t forget to order the hot oil, as most Asian restaurants won’t serve it unless you ask for it.

Best Chinese restaurant I’ve been to in the cities. Their lunch buffet is great, and often frequented by my co-workers and I. Delicious! The favorites among our group are Sesame Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Cream Cheese Puffs, and the Stir Fry Green Beans. Just recently we had staff lunch plans go awry, and in 1 hour Hunan was able to make enough appetizers and entrees for 20 of us as a pick-up order. They are amazing! We apologized and promised we’d give them more notice next time :) But nonetheless, the staff are rock stars and completed our order perfectly! Thank you Hunan!

This place must have changed hands. I’ve been eating here for 8 years and never had a bad meal. I went in for lunch a few weeks ago and it wasn’t bad, but it surely was not what I’ve had for the last 8 years. They changed the lunch menu and no longer give you a crab cheese wonton, the eggrolls are not as good, and the sesame chicken is bland. Now I have to go to Alameda and Simms for decent Chinese food.

«Hunan» Restaurant apparently doesn’t have Hunan food. There may be something on the menu, hidden under the generic American names for dishes, but the classic Hunan dishes I asked for were nowhere to be found. The waiter seemed puzzled that I would even ask for Hunan food. And the Sichuan that was also advertised on the door? Also not available. I was specifically told they did not have Sichuan food. But if you want a standard Chinese buffet, it’s not bad. If you want something more, I’d look somewhere else.

All too often, someone will say: «Man, I just really need to find a good Chinese food Buffet.» To which I normally reply: «That is an oxymoron.» When we decided to go to this establishment, I found myself pleasantly surprised to find that I have been wrong all of this time. The Buffet food wasn’t stale from sitting too long and it actually tasted like someone cooked it. Not like it usually tastes — pre-made, frozen and reheated. The egg rolls were great, and the rice didn’t taste like rubber(which is pretty common in Chinese food buffets.) The staff was very courteous and attentive and the price was very reasonable. This was a great find for us, and you should make it a great find for you too!

This was our first visit. We had Seasame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Eggplant Beef Ribs served in a hotpot. All were served sizzling hot and were delicious. Our knowledgable server provided suggestions on Cantonese dishes. Drinks were continuously filled and almond cookies as well as fortune cookies were served with our check. Comparatively speaking the dishes we had here were better tasting, HOTHOTHOT(tempwise) and less expensive than other Chinese restaurants in the area. We will be back!

When I travel for work I tend to look to dine at either a Chinese or Japanese restaurant. This is the second time I’ve gone to Hunan on my travels through the Twin Cities area. It is convenient when I choose to stay at the Bloomington Embassy about a block away. For me, it’s a tell tale sign when I go to an ethnic restaurant and majority of the patrons are of that ethnicity. That was the case on the evening that I stopped in for my take-out order. There were 5 tables sat and all 5 were of Asian decent. I ordered two pint entrée orders and one app. I went with the Cantonese Egg Rolls to try something different for an appetizer. They were very yummy and definitely different that the typical egg roll. Extra crispy on the outside with almost a filo dough warp and had tons of flavor inside. I’m pretty sure I tasted some curry or something in the inside mixture. I also ordered the Szechuan Chicken and Mandarin Beef. I preferred the Chicken dish the most out of the two, however, I would recommend both. When I eat Chinese, I always avoid the deep fried chicken dishes and go for the slice chicken that is pan friend. The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly… to the point where they were still slightly crunchy. Overall, I would say that this is a high quality Chinese restaurant for the area. The service was quick… about 10 minutes from the time I placed my ordered… and the service was very friendly… they offered me a free beverage as I waited for my take-out order. Hunain’t gonna find anything better in Bloomington!

Where was the red pepper?! My General Tao’s chicken, while marked as spicy on the menu, was milder than a mild spring breeze. If you can’t stand spicy food, then this is probably the place for you. If you want properly seasoned(American) Chinese food, go somewhere else. The egg rolls were tasty, though. I’m giving them a whole extra star for those egg rolls.

When I walked into Hunan, I wondered if we’d made a tactical error in our choice of restaurant for the evening. I am happy to report that we did not. The place is not big, nor is it fancy. There are parts of the décor that kind of scream Chinese $ 7 lunch buffet. It’s a little on the dated side. But that’s pretty much the worst thing I can say about the place. The menu is large like most Chinese menus, but not overwhelming like some Chinese menus. Do NOT forget to look on the back, because that’s where all the noodle dishes are. We almost missed the fact that the back cover of the menu has options too. We ordered the pork fried dumplings, which we agreed are among the best dumplings we’ve ever had. They are filled with really good pork and some delicious seasonings — and it’s the type of pork that is good quality and not fatty. They are pan fried and delightfully crispy on one side but still soft and doughy on the other. Served with a great sauce complete with green onion, I really could have eaten a whole order of six myself. For entrees, we ordered the triple something tofu — sorry, I forget the name. But it’s on the second page of the menu at the bottom and is fried tofu with a bunch of vegetables and most notably THREE kinds of mushrooms. If you like mushrooms and tofu, this is a great dish. We also got the house fried noodles, which are pan fried noodles topped with carrots, snow peas and a few other veggies, plus three kinds of meats. I was surprised when our waiter told us the dish had shrimp, chicken AND pork. I actually thought he didn’t understand the question when we asked him what kind of meat was in the dish and had given us incorrect information. But sure enough, the dish came with all three meats, and they were all great. I really appreciated that all the meat in everything we ate was really high quality. Not low cut, fatty stuff that you get in some restaurants. Even the chicken was delicious and juicy. I felt like this was a real differentiator for Hunan. The meal finished with a plate of not only fortune cookies but almond cookies. A nice touch! Service was good but not pushy. Tea was hot and strong. Really great bite.

I love the hunan chicken here. So good! Lots of chicken, bamboo shoots, broccoli in a very savory spicy brown sauce. It didn’t have too many carrot slices, which I am a big fan of! I get their combination plate and the portions here are HUGE. Price is so reasonable. Their egg drop soup is also wonderful– it’s not too salty or too thick like many other places. And their«small» is a massive bowl. Quality and quantity of food is consistent every time. Service is consistent and very prompt. There’s free surface parking in a cute little strip-mall area.
