This place is great and the store owners couldn’t be nicer! I was first attracted by the smell of fall candles wafting out the door. When we entered I was surprised to see not only homemade jar and other types of candles but handmade wax sculptures. Sculptures are the best name I could give them, they are actually made of wax, with a coating on the outside so they don’t melt. There is a candle in it and when they are lit they glow so prettily. What’s great is that they are reusable, once the candle it comes with it is down you can put another votive in. What a great use of wax! There were so many designs and colors it was hard to choose from-you can get them custom made as well. Definitely a must see in Blowing Rock!

When we lived in Western NC, one of our fave day trips was to Blowing Rock, a picturesque mountain town along the twisty turnies of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Blowing Rock is located near what constitutes skiing in NC and what better way to decorate your ski cabin than with beautiful«homemade» candles from High Country Candles? Before one even enters the shop, one can smell the delightful aromas coming forth from within. Their unusual designs, such as refillable hand carved candles and combinations of scents(up to three!) is what sets this small family owned business apart. We were big fans of their Sage, Sandalwood & Patchouli jarred candles which would grace our mantle during the winter. They even make the candles there so if you are interested you can watch the process while experiencing the warm waxy smells. Yum. There are a lot of shops to visit in Blowing Rock, some worth your time, some perhaps not but HCC is definitely one of the must go to’s when in Blowing Rock.
