Im only giving 1 star because Unilocal does not have a «negative» star rating yet… this was one of the top 3 worst meals I’ve ever had. The restaurant itself is very old and cramped with plastic chairs that look as if they have never been touched with soap or water. Youre served tap water and if you want a soda there is nothing diet to choose from, only bottles of soda such as RC cola and rootbeer, Really??? Now for the food, what little bit you get. I ordered the fried chicken which actually tasted ok, but it wasnt much bigger than a chicken nugget! The side item was mac and cheese which was tasteless and greasy and 7 pieces of cubed potatoes. The biscuit was cold as if it was made yesterday, the butter didnt even melt on it. I dont know where the people giving this place 5 stars are comparing it to, but obviously they arent eating out much because this place makes the worst of the worst list. The waiter doesnt even have good things to say about the food when asking him for suggestions. Go here at your own risk, but dont say you werent warned!

When we first got there we thought was a old empty house but when we got in we loved the old style they had. The food was absolutely perfect. Very tasty and delicious. The waiter was very polite. Brock, I believe that’s his name, explained everything about the Restaurant and made our experience even better. Great staff. Great experience. Highly recommend.

Proper is hands down my favorite restaurant in Boone. They source from local farms and make the meals from scratch. If you want delicious home cooking this is your place! I ate with a group of 6 and they easily accommodated us. The menu has something for everyone and is overall pretty healthy. Also the sweet tea is amazing! I’ve always had good, quick service here. The only downside is the few parking spots available — but park on King Street and it’s a quick walk.

Awesome southern food! All are home-made perfections! We had the southern fried chicken, corn bread, sweet potato casserole & potato with pimento was superb! My husband had the pulled pork and it came perfect too! All food was served hot. Service was great! Definitely a must try when in Boone! :)

We were in Boone doing a visit to App State and I had originally bookmarked this place on my last visit in Unilocal but was not available to try it. THIS was a must try on my next visit so we took advantage. This is a cool spot near downtown that is in a old house they converted to a local restaurant. Just as a word of caution/advice parking is limited so you will need to look for a spot up the street or on the street if you can find it. They have a nice outside seating area as well as inside. The outside is covered in the winter with heaters so that is a nice treat where you can people watch in the winter while you enjoy your meal or beverage! My lunch visit I had the catfish, collards, & hush-puppies…yes I wanted to keep it southern for this visit. The portion was just the right amount. The cornmeal crusted catfish was excellent as well as the collards. The hush-puppies had a little too much lemon taste for me but were still very good. The desserts looked amazing but I was full and we needed to get back to AVL. Our waiter was very attentive and explained the daily specials to us as soon as we sat down. Our glasses were never empty and he made sure we had everythign we needed and checked on us frequently but not too frequently if you know what I mean(that annoying type of waiter:

Let’s get the not so great out of the way — it looks kinda like a haunted house outside and there was a lack of wait staff working. Okay. Now let’s move on to the fact that this place was awesome. We went recently while we were visiting Boone. It came highly recommended and for good reason. It is quaint and beautiful. From the screen door to the fire place to the exposed brick, it is lovely. The waiter took a while to get to us but he was nice. My boyfriend ordered his favorite food– fried chicken. His sides were mac & cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy. I am normally stuck up about mashed potatoes(because my mama makes the best mashed potatoes there are) but these were awesome! There were bits of red skin from the potatoes in there, along with some chunks of potato(aka– they are homemade for sure!). I started with an apricot cider that was refreshing. My boyfriend and I don’t normally order the same thing but the waiter recommended the fried chicken so I went with it. I had mac&cheese and a side salad with balsamic vinegrette. I enjoyed both but next time would go with the salad and mashed potatoes as my side because they were that good. Now for the star of the show– the fried chicken. It was hot, crispy and well seasoned boneless deliciousness. It was somewhat small but I found it filling. My boyfriend is normally a stickler for big portion sizes but said it was so good that he was going to order another piece of chicken(which he did). I’m gonna go ahead and say it — it was the tastiest fried chicken I have ever had. Any future trip to Boone will include a trip to Proper.

Went here at 2 on a Saturday afternoon expecting a bit of a wait but were in for a surprise when they turned us away stating they had run out of food. For a restaurant open until 9 it’s pretty outlandish they would run out of food that early, even on a busy day. So be sure to contact them before arriving to ensure this restaurant is selling food. Tl;dr-wasted our time parking to be turned away.

Proper is a favorite for Sunday Brunch. Thanks to the outdoor seating, I can bring my pups to join me. Their fried chicken is my favorite wether with slaw and Mac and cheese or as part of my chicken and waffles. It’s a nice boneless breast fried perfectly and always moist. During Sunday brunch they have some really great sweet, sweet bacon and biscuits and gravy. Though not regularly available I also recommend you try the delicious potato cakes or their pimento cheese.

Holy heck this place is off the chain. I came here with a friend while visiting her in Boone. She said it was southern/soul food but fancy. It is «fancy» in the sense that the food is plated nicely and the atmosphere is super cute. The nice part is the prices aren’t fancy and you can come dressed however you want, even in post jog clothes. The service is super friendly and everyone is welcoming. They have a nice outdoor patio and are situated in a house which I always love. They only serve certain entrée plates certain days of the week, so check out the menu ahead of time to make sure they will be dishing out what you crave. They have bottles of craft beer too if you are looking for some of that. We started out with the fried green tomato stack. A big stack of fried green tomatoes cemented one on top of the other with pimento cheese. Needless to say it was superb. Everything was cooked to perfection. My friend got her regular which is the catfish with Mac and cheese with cornbread. As usual she loved it. I got the fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy and a sides salad with blue cheese dressing. Literally best fried chicken I have ever had in my life. Even beats out the famous Prices Chicken Coop of Charlotte. Great mashed potatoes with a little bit of potato chunks like I love. Salad and dressing were awesome. Biscuits were great too. I wish I could’ve tried the sweet potato casserole but I needed to order a salad to feel kind of good about myself haha. Did I mention that $ 12 gets you your entrée, two sides and biscuits or cornbread. That’s a steal. Check this place out if you are in Boone or if you are in a thirty minute radius. It’s certainly worth a trip out of your way.
