Ok so warning, this place looks rough but don’t let that stop you from eating here! All we had were burgers and fries, but if it’s the only thing I can ever eat here I would be thrilled about it. Burgers are old school and unpretentious(which I can appreciate so much in an upwardly burger trendy time) and SO delicious. Food was affordable and staff was so friendly!

We were overnighting in Shreveport, headed east and couldn’t start the day without donuts. A map search showed us Southern Maid a short detour off the I20. It was an easy find with a small, visible sign heralding our arrival. This place is a dive. There’s no way around that fact. Old tape clung to the windows from historical signage and the only sugar and creamer available was the non-dairy foil envelope and plain white sugar variety. This Phoenix girl would settle for less than her normal raw sugar and cold half and half. But it added to the ambiance. The donuts were clearly hand cut and formed. Chocolate was slathered on the misshapen holes and cried out to me from behind the time worn plexiglas. The fritters were ingeniously assembled as well, apparently longing to take on the form of their southern cousins, the beignet. 3 perfectly fried dough layers reclined seductively on the bottom shelf. Cinnamon perfectly seasoned them with discernible apple chunks. These glazed, layered beauties caused a fuss in our vehicle when I foolishly chose to take 1⁄3 of the only purchased morsel. If you don’t mind mediocre coffee, the donuts completely overshadow the weathered and worn atmosphere of the physical real estate that is called Southern Maid.
