Maybe my favorite restaurant in JP. Why? Because Fillbelly’s serves the food you need. After wandering around Centre St being unimpressed by expensive sandwich and burrito options, I swung over to Washington St for some soul food. Fillbelly’s started out as a food truck, and in their bricks & mortar location, the menu is similarly limited. They serve about 10 items(check Facebook for a full list) that are made to order with care. The sampler plate is probably the best value in town — chicken & waffles, two types of mac n cheese, and a couple of empanada-like delights for $ 8. Wow. Get this the first time that you visit. I love the waffles — loaded with cinnamon and topped with powdered sugar, they’re fantastic paired with chicken and syrup. The mac n soul casserole is a great dressed up mac n cheese that seems vaguely healthy with its greens and yams. And the bosolitos rival any appetizer in town. The staff are extremely hospitable. I recommend getting takeout and taking your food home to have with a beer. Dining area setup is quick service, but clean and pleasant if you choose to eat there.

You don’t get a lot of delicious food for cheap anywhere these days. You can get a small amount of delicious food or a lot of crappy food for cheap, but not a lot of awesome food! What I’m saying is, this place is special. The sampler is $ 8.50 total and is more than enough for 2 people. We got: amazing crispy fried chicken with waffles, great mac and cheese and mac and soul, and four different bosilitos(veggie, pineapple chicken curry, delicious beef, and unbelievable pulled pork). Insane amounts of food for so little money! Obviously, the food is worth stepping over to the«other side of the tracks,» and it doesn’t hurt that the people behind the counter are super-friendly.

First and foremost, I don’t understand the other reviews here. You mean to tell me, you waited for hours at a packed event to get food from a truck, and it wasn’t good? Get outta here! Do you REALLY think you should review a place after trying it in such an awful atmosphere? You need to stop. Now for everyone else, hooray, Fillbelly’s is back! They have a restaurant now in Jamaica Plain on Washington Street! (I stalked this food truck forever around BU. I could never get the timing right… Either they wouldn’t be there, or I would pass by and not have cash on me.) The restaurant is very, very new and these guys are definitely still getting the hang of it I think. None the less, they should not be penalized for that. We split the chicken and waffles. It was enough for two people, and it cost $ 5. FIVEDOLLARS for a large portion of fried chicken and sugary goodness. You know your inner fat kid is excited for this! The people working there are as sweet as anything, and the food is phenomenal. They’re still working out some things like creating an identity and a feeling for their restaurant, but they’ll get there eventually… Welcome to JP, Fillbelly’s!

Twice I’ve had the ‘pleasure’ of experiencing the food from Fillbelly’s at the SoWa market and twice it was a fiasco and disappointment. The first time might not entirely be their fault, it was at the 1st annual food truck festival and they were slammed beyond belief. Erick H and I waited in line for 75 minutes before finally placing our order; at that point they ran out of almost everything, including their empanadas. The only thing left was their West Indies plate which was a few pieces of fried pork, plantains and some beans and rice. It was decent but not great. The pork was very dry as where the plantains which were in the oil too long and came out hard. What I I really wanted to try was their empanadas, which they call bosilitos, and which some people have raved about. This opportunity came last Sunday and I seized it, ordering two sets of chicken and two sets of BBQ pulled pork bosilitos. What they didn’t tell me was that I’d have to wait another 25 minutes before they were ready at the window. I wish I had been told that before I ordered them, especially since it was 90+ degrees outside and there was no shade in sight. Once they had arrived, I grabbed them all excited and bit my way right in. They were ok, not nearly as good as I had expected them to be. Definitely not worth it. So to sum things up, my first experience there, the pieces of pork were really dry and the beans and rice were decent, and then the second time, the bosilitos were overrated. The service isn’t very friendly, especially in comparison to other food truck’s I’ve been to and the wait is ridiculous. Twice was enough for me, I’m done.

Ugh. I hate giving 2 stars to a family biz, but this Sunday I stood in line for Fillbelly’s at the 1st annual food truck festival in the(fake wanna-be Soho) neighborhood of SoWa. I really don’t think some of these trucks, including Fillbelly’s was prepared at all for the kind of crowd that arrived for this event, which I think means there’s a demand for food trucks in one place in Boston on a more regular basis than once a year. Anyway, I’d heard good things about Fillbelly’s. So I stood in line for an hour and 45 minutes! YES! almost 2 hours! First, it took a while for the truck to start taking orders. Then 20 minutes into taking orders, they ran out of the chicken and waffles and mac & cheese! I should have left then, but I mean at that point I’d waited 45 minutes and there were only about 25 people in front of me. How much longer could it take?! UGH! Plus, the mac and soul casserole(mac & cheese and collard greens) sounded interesting and so did the West Indies platter(grilled pork, rice & beans, and friend plantains). Also I wanted to try the bosolitos. I really really really wanted to say that the food was worth the wait. But I was soooo disappointed. The pork was dry like rocks. The plantains were really hard. The mac and soul casserole was dried out and cold and almost flavorless. The only thing that was ok were the bosolitos which were kinda like empanadas. Maybe under less pressure and with a smaller line, Fillbelly’s would make me happy. Unfortunately, it was a very very sad experience.

Oh, what a cruel world. I fell in love with Fillbelly’s bosilitos(empanadas), and they haven’t been back to my neighborhood since then. Their Twitter feed has been pretty quiet these past weeks, aside from a few complaints about other vendors getting territorial. Please come back to the Copley area and feed me empanadas.(And please bring hotter hot sauce with you!) A more detailed review on my blog:
