This is a great little shop on the second floor above the household paint store. Johnson may not have a huge selection of supplies in comparison to the larger artist supply chains, but the staff is really nice and they certainly will have what you’re looking for at a fair price.

I LOVE Johnson’s – it’s staffed by experienced and helpful people who always have the answer to technical problems. No need to consult Studio Tips manuals – just ask Eduardo or Gabe. And downstairs in the paint department they carry a full range of pigments and glazes and obscure brushes for paint treatments. One day many years ago Eduardo caught up with me several blocks away, to return my forgotten credit card. I feel good just walking in the place – may they be around forever.

Wow, I can’t believe I’m the first one reviewing this. It further confirms my belief that no one knows they’re still in business.
The staff get 5 stars for being incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They carry a pretty narrow range of professional grade materials, mainly painting and drafting supplies. They may not have everything you need, but they’ll order it for you (see part about helpful staff). Their prices are higher than other places in Boston/​Cambridge, although technically they do offer a discount off retail.
