Landry’s Bicycles

I took my bike in to have a basket installed. Had to go twice to the store to pick it up as the attendant incorrectly told me the bike was ready when it wasn’t. Manager with an arrogant and lofty attitude, barely apologized for having me waste my time.
Service was pricey but not great. After having it installed, every now and then the basket comes loose.
Never coming back.

Super nice staff and quick, quality service! They won’t overcharge you for the small stuff, and are willing to do a quick fix no charge. I went in today with a few minor issues– they fixed everything within 20 minutes for free! I’ll definitely be taking my business here from now on.

I’m new to town and looking for my bike shop. I dropped off my wheel on Wednesday to have it trued and some spokes replaced. They said the wheel would be ready by Friday (2 days!). I told them that would work as long as the wheel was ready by 11am because I was catching a flight that Friday. They said it would be done by 10:30am. When I arrived at 12 noon, they hadn’t even started working on my wheel. They said they would make it the next job up, but it would take an hour. That wouldn’t work with my flight, and because of their hours (which have changed on Unilocal in the past week) and my work schedule, the next time I would have been able to pick up the tire would have been the following Thursday. Since this bike is my how I commute to work, that wasn’t an option.
Mark from Landry’s called and emailed me multiple times to find a way to make up for the mistake. When I finally had time to come in, they gave me a discount on a new tire (rather than just fixing the old one). The service guy even patched together something on my bike that he was worried was unsafe, for free. All in all, they certainly cared about fixing their mistake.

Took my bike there Wednesday evening with a loose seat post. They were very helpful and quickly diagnosed I need a thicker tube. Luckily they had one in stock. However they did not have the seat post bolt in stock. No worries, they’ll get it from their other location by Friday, it’ll be done by the end of the day.
I call them on Friday afternoon, the part didn’t arrive, so the repair is pushed out to Tuesday. (?!)
I call them Tuesday afternoon, they say it’ll be ready by the end of the day and they’ll give me a call. Well, it’s 6:03pm, no call received, and their phone line is on answering machine…
So far it’s been 6 days waiting for a part that a) should be on stock in any shop that calls itself a repair shop b) ships within 2 days from Amazon.
Edit: they followed up very professionally, and sincerely apologized. The bike was apparently done Tuesday evening but there was some miscommunication.

More than half of this space is storage and repair areas which means a cramped showroom. You’d also think the large amount of «backroom» space would mean a large selection and inventory. Nope. I needed new tires for my ’13 Trek DS 8.6 and wanted a Bonty or Specialized puncture-​resistant pair. One of the area’s largest Trek and Specialized dealers had neither, and the kid at the counter wasn’t a help. Enter the manager who knew the products and ordered them for me. She was very helpful and even had them shipped to the Braintree store which is easier for me to access.
I thought I’d check out new bikes while I was there. Once I was able to get the attention of a salesperson, I asked about the current model Trek DS 8.6. His response — only slightly paraphrased — «we don’t carry the high end models here» because their clientele, mainly college students, he purported, don’t buy them. 1. I venture a guess that many BU students have the resources to purchase a good bike; 2. This area also has a population that can afford to live in high-​priced Brookline; many with young families. My point is, it seems Landry’s doesn’t know the local demographic.
This location may work for some people, maybe even a majority of consumers, but my verdict is that they’re between «Meh, I’ve experienced better» and «A-​OK.» That’s too bad, because with more knowledgeable sales staff and better inventory of ready-​to-​test-​ride bikes, it could be great.

My bike got hit right outside of their store while it was raining, so out of convenience I went in to see what needed to be done to fix it. It wasn’t badly damaged, but they completely overcharged me for labor. What took them 30 minutes at most to fix cost me more than the bike is even worth. What bugs me the most is that I’m paying a fortune for «labor» and yet they didn’t even bother to look at the rest of it or take care of it well (i.e tune it up). The only positive thing I can say is that they allowed me to store it there for a few days while I was debating whether to go forth with the repair. Basically, if you can go anywhere else, do it. Your wallet will be pleased.

Bought a bike online and thought I was savvy enough to assemble it myself. When I popped into Landry’s for them to inspect it, they told me my fork was backwards. Oops! I felt so silly but not because of anything they said. They laughed with me and never made me feel stupid.
Less than 24-​hours later I have my bike bike, set up properly, and ready to ride.

Cannot recommend for repairs at all. I’ve had nice treatment at times, but our last two repairs were poor.
My wife brought in her bike for a rear flat tire and didn’t get it back for over a month. They broke the internally-​geared hub. While they eventually repaired it, they never apologized, instead implying that she didn’t know how to switch gears! (We’ve had IGHs for years.)
Then, during the long wait for that bike, we brought in another bike for two flat tire repairs. They upsold a brake tightening to a total of $ 100, quite pricey for what they did. The next day the tire was flat again.
At that point we took it to REI. For $ 17 they fixed the sharp rim which was responsible for the flats. Landry’s never looked for the cause of the flat.
They are the closest bike shop, but we won’t be back. I now understand why the reviews are quite mixed here.

I actually feel somewhat better about my lackluster experience after reading many of these reviews. I went to Landry’s Bicycles to 1) have my rear tire break adjusted and 2) have my rear tire re-​aligned. I happened to be away from my house and needed this done ASAP, otherwise I would have done this myself and it would have taken all of 10 minutes. I’ll cut to the chase and say that all though I did receive my bike in under an hour, contrary to claims that LB’s service is typically slow, I was grossly overcharged for what I consider to be minimal services. The entire job cost me $ 50, the price of a full tune-​up at most decent bike shops, although to be fair, I’ve just been informed that Laundry’s charges $ 100 for a full bike tune-​up. Basically, I would not recommend this bike shop for anyone concerned about reasonably priced service.

Still 1*. I brought my bike in for my 30 day free service a month ago. There was an obvious, easily fixable frayed brake wire. They didn’t do anything to fix it (just needed a wire cap). A staff member on the floor fixed it without hesitation once I asked him, but I can’t believe the original servicing crew overlooked something so obvious (again). Will never bring my bike here for servicing. Still a decent place to buy though.

Good bike selection. TERRIBLE service with extreme LACK OF DETAIL in servicing.
How I know? I bought a new bike from them recently as they were the closest vendor that had a model I wanted.
I pad for the bike, and the woman said I could walk out the door with the bike. I thought it strange she would just give me a bike off the rack, so I asked another sales guy if they did tune-​ups (like most bike shop do with new bike) and he was like «Oh, right. We do a new bike tune-​up.». Slightly peeved, I requested this tuneup. I also noted that one of the caps on the tires was missing.
They said I could pick up my bike in 3 days and they would call me when it was finished. On the 3^rd day I did not receive a call and called them. They said, «oh yes, it was done.»
I picked it up the next day and noticed the cap was still missing. Makes me wonder if anyone even looked at my bike for this «tune up»… if me, an amateur, notices a missing tire cap, how could a trained bike tuner miss that? Anyone who has filled air in a tire, be in car, bike, whatever, knows that putting the cap back on is like, the natural thing to do after filling it with air.
DO NOT BRING YOUR BIKE HERE FOR SERVICING. I AM CONVINCED THEY DO NOTHING.

I feel a little embarrassed that I wrote my review as promptly after my experience as I did. I thought I would forget about it and my experience would go unnoticed but in reality I should have left my angry letter in a drawer a few days.
Mark, a manager there, left me a voicemail the next day saying he had heard about my experience and wanted to rectify it. He followed up and called me again the next day and we got to talking. He not only apologized for the lapse in service but explained to me how and why what happened probably happened. He admitted to some flaws in their communication and sounded empathetic. I told him that his call was all I needed but he insisted on leaving a credit on my account there. Thank you for the call Mark.

Got a tune up for my bike two weeks ago. COST 100 $$$$$ for them to do not much. Takes them a week. When I left there was a clicking when I peddled so later that week I went back. They told me I could leave it for 3 – 4 days so they could do a ‘sound analysis’ then walked away from me while I stood there. I use my bike to get around town so 3 – 4 days is brutal. All I wanted for them to do was to look at it and see if it’s anything major. Without him looking at it they turned around and left me at the counter. On the way home my breaks started squealing. So much for a tune up. I am NEVER going back here and taking my business somewhere locally owned.

The staff is ultra friendly and rather than sell you they help you get the right part or bike. They email you a list of all repairs and their fitting service is a must for any serious rider.

Mark the manager was very helpful and my bike rides perfectly after next day visit. Thanks!

Refer to the post below that starts with «Fraud». I had a very similar experience. Money-​grubbers who don’t care about you or your bike. Look elsewhere for folks not just after your money.
I’ve been in there a few times for misc stuff and ignored the rudeness of the attendants mainly b/​c it’s a convenient spot. But recently I had to replace back tire that was stolen and after $ 200+ bucks I pick it up to find that the shifting now doesn’t work. I bring it back and they say «Oh yea, that chain’s no good with the new gears. Oh, and this wire for shifting is eroded so you’ll need that replaced too.»
Not going back there again. EMS down commonwealth has a couple good mechanics who actually seem to give a damn.

This review is a summary review of all my visits in the past two years. I have gone to landry’s Boston for two bikes, bike shoes, one helmet, one saddle, bike fit, tune up, bike advice (twice), these are all separate visits. I bought a saddle two years after I bought my long distance bike. and a disclaimer Landrys is like disneyland for me so I might be biased.
I have felt that people at Landrys try to make a huge effort to make a personal contact with you. My big surprise when I went in the second, third fourth time was that if the person I met before (like Greg or Andrew) they remembered my name, new which bike I was inquiring about, or later which bike I bought from them. I actually have made a few friends before of going to this place.
Every time I buy something no matter who is it, they don’t push stuff on you instead they give you the pros and cons of different brands and then let you decide. Sale people don’t hover either. They tell you every thing and then let you know that if you have any more questions you can ask, but walk away and give you time to play around, and decide first one you want. Or if you want it at all.
I recently got my new saddle (two years after I bought my Trek madone) and Trevor was so helpful in the whole process. I could see that they were swamped with customer that day so yeah I had to wait a bit but still Trevor answered all of my questions (I do tend to be a difficult customer some times) and helped me decide on a saddle and told me to try it out a few days. Guess what I love my saddle.
The basic tune up I have felt is a bit pricey though so after the first two times (my old bike the one that i bought some place else) and my madone that I have been using for two years, I just learnt how to do it myself.
I feel that the bike mechanics are extremely helpful, with my old bike I went in so many times just for advice and they knew that gave me the time and explained stuff to me quite well which corroborated with other more knowledgable and experienced cyclists.
Oh and if you want to want to fix some basic thing and just done have the tools at hand, go to Landrys they have the tools by the door and fix it yourself.

Dropped it off for a tune-​up — at the 66 Needham St, Newton location. Quickly told I needed a new chain and cassette based on me telling them sometimes the gears seem to ‘slip’. Ok, I didn’t argue since I do have over 4K miles on the bike.
I told them I think I have a slow leak in the front tube. They said they’d check it and replace the tube, if neceessary. They had the bike for 5 days.
When I picked it up the guy at the register said he had no idea about the slow leak. Like I was an idiot for even asking him.
Lousy customer service, in my opinion. Not to mention $ 90.00 for just the ‘fune-​up’. Then it is $ 10.00 or $ 20.00 to install any single item.
I miss International Bike. There is a reason I bought my bike there and not at Landry’s. Anyone can sell a bike. It it the long-​term service related relationship that really matter. Landry’s is a disappointment in this area.
I will not go back to Landry’s. I didn’t like the way I was treated at their Norwood store and Newton is no better.
I’ll go to Fenway Bike. Even though it is not convenient the people that work there really have a genuine interest in their customers.

I just had a great service experience. My bike crank was making a clunking noise on every revolution so I brought it in. I got there around 6:30 on a Tue. Dan test rode it. Then put it right on the stand. Checked and tightened a bunch of things. Had me test ride it. It was still doing it so he tried one more thing — tightened the bottom bracket. That did it. Everything feels great again. It was great that he fixed it while i waited and answered all my questions while he was at it.

I had such a great experience buying spin shoes here!!! Everyone was incredibly helpful and friendly during the entire process! Calvin really took his time making sure my shoes were the perfect fit and working on the placement of the clips. And wow does having your own shoes make such a difference!

What an airy and spacious showroom this is filled with bicycles and all the necessary (and some unnecessary) riding gear.
Given the cold temps and snow we’ve had lately, we’re a bit blue missing out on bike riding.
Even though we don’t need anything as we have bicycles and equipment galore at home, we stopped in here for a look.
Bicycles like everything else have gotten very high tech these days and for the very serious rider or racer this place will likely have a lot of eye candy for you to peruse.
There are a variety of price points including a super amazing bike coming in at just under $ 6,000. But there is truly something for most here at various price points including adorable tiny bikes for tots who are ready for their first two-​wheelers.
They had a bicycle tire pump that was very well designed and like nothing I’ve seen before. And there is plenty of bike-​wear from which to choose if you feel the need to go all «Tour de France“‘
I love the smell of the rubber tires, the gleam of new frames and the general ambiance of a full-​fledged bike shop.
They do repairs right on site which is handy but I am a believer in learning how to do some basic repairs on your own.
A flat tire can happen at any time and it’s best to be prepared to do your own patching so you’re not stranded.
I appreciated that other than one male staff person, the other 3 we saw were women. I do love a woman who knows her way around bikes and bike repair.
Although we didn’t buy anything we were grateful for the attentive service we received and knowledgeable answers to our questions.
While I love the winter, I long for some cleaner and clearer roads and ever so slightly warmer temperatures so that recreational bicycling is a possibility without as much discomfort.
It was nice to visit this lovely well-​appointed store and dream about flying down the road under pedal-​power.
