The Indian/Chinese restaurant Mumbai Spice on Mass Ave in Boston was a huge disappointment when my husband and I went there at 6pm on a Friday. Dreadful, dull, cafeteria-grade food. Too bad, I’d wanted to find out what Hakka Chinese food was like. After going, to Mumbai Spice, I think I still don’t know what the Indian take on Chinese cuisine is like. Lansing’s hot & sour soup wasn’t spicy, hot or sour, and was actually lukewarm in temperature to boot. Oddly it had uncooked cabbage and carrot in its viscous broth. Definitely too much cornstarch was used to thicken the soup. My dumpling soup seemed slightly better, but nothing special. I could have made the same thing at home in no time at all with bouillon and grocery store frozen gyoza dumplings. Worst were the entrees. Lansing ordered Kung Pao Chicken, that was also dull, not spicy and too viscous. This was weird because the waiter warned it would be very spicy hot, and Lansing said that was fine. My Singapore Noodles were ordered with chicken, but came with not one morsel of meat. The noodles were also incredibly bland. Worst meal we’ve had in years. We actually wondered if we were getting warmed over food that had been cooked earlier in the day, and toned down in seasoning for the American palette. Some restaurants only have a chef working during the day, and only serve warmed over food at night. That could have explained the poor food we were served, but at the prices Mumbai Spice charges, everything should be freshly cooked to order. We will never go there again. I would not be surprised if, like the Chinese Mirch Hakka restaurant that was previously at this location, Mumbai Spice goes out of business after a year. It certainly doesn’t seem like a professionally run restaurant, and deserves oblivion.

If you’re a student at Northastern/Berklee/live in the Back Bay area and are craving some good, decently priced Indian food then Mumbai Spice(formerly Chinese Mirch) is your spot. The new owners have definitely done amazing things to the space and the menu. First off, service is top notch. They are very attentive and responsive to customer needs throughout and also very helpful with the menu to those unfamiliar with Indian food. I love the addition of the«street» snacks to the menu like the bhel puri, pani puri, vada pav, etc. Decent portions and well cooked with rich flavor — the vada pav is a personal favorite! I’ve tried a variety of their dishes and they only serve halal meats(!!!). They excel at all the classics, aka the naans, paneer, kofta, chana. The Asian fusion dishes I’ve tried include the chili paneer and the mapo tofu which were also both very good! They also have a great pre-set lunch menu that is around $ 10 bucks(need to double check on this). They’ve expanded their bar from a pure wine bar to serving other hard liquors since the new owners came in. Bonus: if you’re a college student, make sure to ask for the student discount!

The food was absolutely delicious! We had the lamb chops, seekh kebab, Mumbai blazing prawns, samosa chaat and a vada pao for apps! For dinner we had butter chicken, saag chicken, mutton biryani and malabar shrimp curry with garlic naan. Everything was super tasty and the service was great. Ambiance was perfect for friends or family. I brought my 1 year old and the staff was very friendly with her and didn’t mind her running around.

I’m having mixed feelings about this place. It was surprisingly empty and felt pretty overly posh. I was disappointed with the samosas, they were small and with a heavy«crust». The rice was very plain, not cooked with spices as I am accustomed to and required sauces from the entrées. Staff was friendly and quite eager, so that was a plus. I was fond of the variety of food offerings, all of which are said to be halal(refreshing). Entrées were very flavorful and pleasant to all senses, but leaning towards the expensive side. I will be returning.

I decided to bring an old business associate who was visiting from Philadelphia for the weekend to Mumbai Spice. His father came with us as well. To start, the associate ordered the Blazing Mumbai Prawns and I got the Tandoori Chicken Tikka. The father ordered the Salt & Pepper Gobi. My appetizer was absolutely divine and the others seemed to enjoy theirs as well. I am told that the prawns were extremely tender and flavorful. For our entrees, I ordered the Dum Rogan Josh, my friend had the Ginger and Garlic Lobster, and his father had the Chicken Achaari. They all surpassed our appetizers which was a very difficult task to do! Overall, the service was very good. I highly recommend this place. –Mike

Deeply disappointed with the two Q’s — Quality and Quantity!!! The non-vegetarian entrees have 25% meat compared to 75% veggies. Felt as if i was cheated for the kind of prices that the restaurant charges. Also, do not order cocktails here. There is hardly any liquor in their cocktails felt like i was having ‘Mock’-tails!!! Only positive is the staff is super attentive amd friendly:)

5 stars for the food !! Food is very good. Indochinese is awesome(I had chili garlic noodles, very close to what u get in india). I also had the Karahi achari chicken(fantastic) and the Paneer makhani(yummy). 3 stars for the service. I had ordered for take out. I had to wait for an hour and a half before my order came. There was a lot of confusion with my order, apparently their system was acting weird. Secondly l don’t know what screwed up software they have for billing since the total of my bill was totally wrong, when I told that the total is wrong they replied that their is some problem with the printer(a printer that charges u more than the bill… Certainly weird!!!) I would give them a benefit of doubt since this was just my first time there. I hope they fix their software/printer and pay more attention to take out orders too. I would definitely visit there again since the food is really good. Far better than other indian restaurants around that area.

Food– 2.5 Stars I give 2.5 stars only for the north india food I ate. Not at all good for the Chinese food. Just bland and spicy. Bill– Cheaters They charged me $ 2.19 extra on my bill. When I came back home and added my bill on the items I ate I noticed the total coming up to $ 35.42 instead of $ 37.61 More over they charged me 5 and Above Auto Gratuity of $ 6.27 on which I was taxed. I never know any restaurant that charges tax on gratuity. Please check your bills before paying if you end up dining at this place.

From service to food, I would have to say this is one of my favorite places to go and eat. Everything I have tried so far has been absolutely amazing! From the Butter Chicken to the Hakka noodles, so happy this restaurant opened up in Boston!

The food is so amazing! The butter chicken is outrageous! And the lunch special is convenient and insane– so much food! Most of all, however, our server Mamta was the most friendly, attentive person ever and deserves all the praise. Go here! You won’t regret it !
