Onyx Hotel, a Kimpton Hotel

When traveling more than 40’weeks out of the year for business you tend to be very particular about where you spend your personal time. For us it’s always Kimpton hotels. It truly feels like coming home, this was our first trip to Boston and it was a pleasant surprise to see a familiar face from the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, hey Brad :)
The room perfect, and thank you for always making Maya’s stays when she is with me extra special the extra effort is noticed and appreciated

Great location close to everything. Front desk staff is consistently nice (to the point of remembering names when you come and go). Housekeeping was average. Hotel lobby is awkward. A large sheer curtain curves around to separate the restaurant /​bar and the lobby is more or less empty of all décor. Bikes are available and it’s a short walk to subway system. No additional frills like pool, etc., and rooms are smallish.
Would not recommend for a romantic getaway (someone mentioned honeymoon in another review — no way!) but this is a great option for business or to attend events at TD or tourist travel. Über ride to Cambridge and Harvard area was around $ 13. Much less to airport and tourist areas that are beyond walking distance.
A nice place to stay if your primary destination is the city and not just the hotel.

We stayed here the weekend of the Boston Marathon 2016. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Great location, short walk to the Haymarket T station and about a mile to Boston Common. The only negative was the $ 47 a night valet service for your car (we had a rental the first two nights). I would definitely stay here again, just not with a rental vehicle.

I was stayed in the hotel on the night of 3÷12÷16. I was extremely displeased with the service of the staff. Complete disregard for customer service. My friend and I sat at the bar and had one beer and were cut off by the bartender Tyler. He was extremely rude and disrespectful. We then spoke with the manager on duty and were given run-​around answers and were not being treated seriously. We proceeded to say that we would not like to stay in the hotel and we were not given a refund or anything to make our stay better. We were also not please with the staff because we were told our luggage could be brought up to the room. Not one employee stepped up and helped with the bags and it was completely ignored by the management at the front desk. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone based on the complete lack of customer service.

The best hotel in Boston! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming; they appreciate you as a guest (and friend if you stay here as often as I do). Anything you need, they’ve got it or will get it. Ruby Room is a great spot with delicious fare. Rooms are very stylish and comfortable. The hotel is hip, clean, and in a great location. Kimpton has a nice rewards program too! Also, the personal touch is really nice! If you’d like a photo of a loved one waiting for you in your room, done. Extra hangars, done. A blanket instead of comforter, done. They aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible, which is great for frequent travelers! Also, thank you to my friends at the Onyx for the bottle of wine this time! You all are the best!

What a great spot. Convenient, friendly and a very nice atmosphere overall.
They’ve really stepped up the game for a place around the Garden.

This was my first time staying at a kimpton hotel and it was fabulous! The minute we checked in, Alina at the front desk was so friendly and welcoming. I mentioned it was my birthday and she arranged a bottle of champagne and donuts to be in our room. Great location, comfy bed and just a really nice experience. Will definitely be back!!!

Great boutique hotel! I will definitely stay here again. Staff was awesome with suggestions/​directions and customer service. Can’t go wrong with a welcome glass of wine upon arrival. The décor was perfect! The beds and pillows felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. Can’t wait for my next return.

I will say in the hotel realm it is difficult for me to give out 5 stars. With that said the room was great with local personality and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier in helping me find good locals places to grab food, drinks, etc. Great value for anyone staying in the city.

Haven’t actually stayed here but I’m writing a review because this the only place by TD gardens that’s willing to print your tickets.

Small rooms and the walls creak.
Hip and trendy décor as expected for a Kimpton.
Valet sucks. They didn’t come out to greet us as we arrived. I had to walk in to tell tell the lady at the front desk, and she walked out to grab the keys from the ignition. Retrieving the car was absolutely obscene! It took over 45 min! WTH!
The convenience factor of it being so close to TD Garden is the only reason to stay here. I will likely not be returning.

Staff is pleasant, location is great if you are planning on going to a game at TD Garden, too… by all the bars, etc. A little walk from North End and Quincy Market/​Fanuiel Hall area… very nice rooms and not horribly overpriced.

Overall, this hotel is very nice. It is my first time coming to Boston, and the staff was friendly. I needed a place to stay for 2nights. There is a free wine hour from 5−6pm (), there is also a 24hour gym and you can rent their bicycle (which was complimentary)
So far I can’t complain.

Love this place — I’ve stayed here 5 different times while in town in business and am always very impressed. Super friendly staff, quiet and clean rooms and great location (my office is literally across the street so it couldn’t be better). They also would hold my luggage when I had later flights, lend me umbrellas when it rained and even started to remember my name (and my room service order) after a stays.
I think the best part is when they send you an email a few days before check in telling you to send a picture of a friend, family member, pet or anything you love. My first stay I sent a picture of my dog and came into my room to a huge picture of her blown up, two waters, some candy and a sweet note telling me to enjoy my stay. It was so sweet and made me feel at home and was exactly what I needed after my third city in 2 day and over 10 hours of combined flight delays.
When I came back a month later I got the same email and sent a picture of my dog again (naturally), my mom, my best friend and Matthew Fox and they actually printed them all off and put them on a poster board for me along with the a note, waters and candy. How sweet!
Will definitely stay here again the next time I’m in Boston (for business or pleasure). Highly recommend and can’t say enough good things. Thank you to the Onyx for making business travel a little less lonely, the city of Boston fun and inviting and giving me a super comfy bed to crash in at the end of a long day. Can’t wait to come back!

Love this hotel! We were attending a Celtics game and chose the Onyx due to the proximity to the Garden. Check in is at 3 and unfortunately tip off of the game was also at 3, so I called ahead to see if there was any possibility of early check in. They said they couldn’t guarantee anything, but come and they can at least hold our bags. We got there really early (around 11am) and they let us check in right away! It was great after our long drive to just relax in the room before the game. We really appreciated that! The rooms are a little small, but that was fine with us. Very cute décor and comfy beds. They do try to get you with the mini bar and wifi charges, so be careful. There was a small bottle of water on the desk; you think that would be complimentary but luckily my boyfriend noticed the $ 4 tag on it. It got to the point I was afraid to touch anything in the room with fear of being charged for something.
Overall the stay was great for our Boston getaway. The front desk staff was super friendly and helpful with any questions or inquiries we had. And you can’t beat the location!

Very clean, boutique hotel. What I loved was how clean the rooms felt and smelled. There was no cheap cleaning product smells or bleached smelling sheets. The bedding was silky soft with nice fluffy pillows. While the room is not large it was well appointed and had some nice design flairs that made it feel hip and it your ordinary standard issue hotel.
Seems to be dog friendly as well, the receptionist had his dog at the entrance. Staff were all nice and walkable to many downtown spots like the North End.
Recommended.

Traveling to Boston for the first time and we wanted to stay somewhere central to the North End. The Mrs. found a boutique hotel that was very swanky, if you ask this southern yokel. From the moment our cab rolled up to the moment we walked out to catch the «T» the staff was extremely helpful, courteous, and attentive. More than a handful of times Kenny at the front desk gave us recommendations that worked out beautifully. The staff has a good working knowledge of the area and was eager to help us personalize our Boston experience. Once we had our keys, we went up to the ninth floor overlooking the back of the hotel. The room was immaculate and was very cool. It had interesting artwork on the wall and a very comfortable bed. I could see if others have comments about the size of the room but to them, I say «Get out of your room and go outside to see the city». We didn’t choose the hotel to stay in all day. Just for resting and sleeping at night. So for us, the room was just fine in size. After all, it is a boutique hotel. The room has a minibar and an electronic safe to keep valuables when away-​very useful. Also there was a nice flat screen with decent channel selection. Downstairs there was free wine tasting in the evening every night it seemed. In the morning I think there was a breakfast served in the lobby/​restaurant area. We tried to eat in the city as much as possible so we never tried it. The bathroom had plenty of room and had a nice vanity and shower/​tub. I would recommend bringing your own soap and shampoo. They do provide some fancy «Bigelow» soap from NYC but they have the dispensers locked onto the wall of the shower and it takes «forever» to get what you need to pump out-​ours seemed to just dribble out a drop at a time. Hello 7 – 11 right down on the corner! Also our water is much softer in the south so I wasn’t accustomed to the hard water. The room service! We did order room service once as we wore ourselves down after a few days of walking all over Boston. We had a very good experience with room service. I ordered a couple of entrees and a drink and probably within 20 minutes I had my hot meal in my room. There is a gratuity charge that they place on the bill (which is very generous I must say) so keep that in mind when you sign for the bill. The Onyx is only a block away from the Gah-​den (where they play hockey and basketball) so we watched a Bruins game and had to walk only a block to get to the hotel. Nice. Numerous bars within a block which can be heard through your window at night. If bars are your thing, it won’t bother you because you’ll be the ones making the noise instead of the ones trying to get some shuteye. I’m getting older and I don’t know why I used to not want to take naps-​love some naps. This part of Boston you won’t see many commercial buildings-​except Dunkin’ Donuts. There’s one on every corner-​which was just fine by me.
Great stay in a neat hotel with an attentive staff!

We had book this a stay at this hotel for our honeymoon through Hotwire, My wife is a big review reader and thoroughly researches hotels prior to booking them and was very impressed with the reviews. Unfortunately when getting there we were not very satisfied and were extremely shocked.
Upon arrival we pulled up to the hotel and the valet greeted us and took our car as we checked in. We were greeted by the Jen’s who were very pleasant and checked us in quickly. Unfortunately at this time we also found out that the valet parking was $ 47/​Night and there really weren’t too many options. After coming back and looking at their website it does mention the cost for the valet under the FAQ sections but feel this is something that should be brought to your attention when booking.
After check in we proceeded up to our room on the 11^th floor (top floor), we entered the room and it looked exactly was shown in the pictures and they had also provided us with a complementary bottle of champagne. There wasn’t much of a view due to a parapet wall right out side of the window and we were disappointed with this.
After being in the room for a few minutes we began to hear a loud humming noise from above, we turned off our in room heater and the noise still continued. We then called down and they said they would have the building engineer come up and look at it. Roughly 30 minutes later still no sign of the engineer and the noise started driving us crazy so we went down to the front desk. The manager apologized for the delay and said it was probably something on the roof making the noise and offered us another room along with complementary valet for the stay.
She took us up to the room prior to the move so we could look at the room since it was slightly smaller but was pretty much the same room and had a better view which was fine with us. She then came up to the old room and helped us bring our belongings down to our new room and then we could finally settle in.
After getting ready we had called for our car to be pulled around, we were told about 15– 20 minutes, we proceeded down after 20 minutes and still no car. We waited an additional 15 minutes before our car was pulled around (we even went out to look to see if it was parked and the manager also had noticed us and checked on it). Upon getting into the car it had made a noise while driving away, for some reason they had turned emergency break? Which they never put on any other time the car was pulled around.
When returning that night the valet did not come out and we had to go in to give them our keys but he was extremely focused on his phone and didn’t even notice us coming in even after waiting a minute for him. We had to ask him if we just hand him the keys to get his attention.
The next morning while showering I had noticed some black mold in the shower between the tiles and was taken back by this again considering the reviews and cost of the stay. We went about our day and then decided to check out and go somewhere else since we just weren’t enjoying our selves. They refunded one nights stay after a big hassle through Hotwire, not the hotel.
In conclusion the hotel staff minus the valet were extremely helpful and delightful to deal with did everything they could. There is just a breaking point when your trying to enjoy your honeymoon.
A tip for first timers would be to either take taxi or walk to your destinations. We found it extremely difficult to drive around and find parking during the day. We had drove by 3 different breakfast spots but couldn’t find any parking in different parts of the city.

I selected this hotel because of previous Kimpton stays and it’s proximity to TD gardens. As expected it was overall a very enjoyable experience.
The room itself was a bit small, but very well appointed. Shortly after I checked in I was presented with a complimentary bottle of wine and bottles of water. I’m always greatly appreciated!
When I received my confirmation email they included a feature I’d never seen before. If I sent them a JPEG of the photo they would have it waiting in my room when I arrived. I did, but they did not. not sure how their process broke down but after taking the time to consider it which photo I would enjoy seeing on my arrival, I was disappointed that none were waiting at all.
As it was winter time I didn’t have an opportunity to try their complementary bicycles but hope to visit again when the weather is warmer and we can enjoy this amenity.

Cool hotel in a pretty accessible part of town. I was here for business and found the place to be everything I needed. I’ve stayed in a few other Kimpton properties so I kind of knew the layout and benefits.
This particular time was a first for me seeing the bicycle program in use which is pretty cool. The staff here were very friendly and the rooms were well maintained.
I would certainly choose this place again if traveling back into the area. Bonus is that there area few decent places right adjacent to this hotel if you wanted to branch out while in town.
