I’ve been putting off writing this review because it’s difficult to express how much I love this place. The only reason I ever come here is to fill up my CO2 tank but I always leave feeling enlightened and fulfilled in every expect of my life. When you come to Tolman you’re treated like family whether you own a big welding company or you’re just trying to gas up your kegerator so you can suck down some beers. When an employee says to me «that’ll be $ 19.95» I know he’s really saying, «everything is going to be alright, I’m here for you.»

I love this place. As a homebrewer, there is hands-​down no better place around to get CO2 refills, equipment, or repairs. The staff is very friendly and quite knowledgeable. And they carry a nice selection of other tools (like an extensive line of vice grips, or some decent telescoping inspection mirrors) as well as gags and jokes.

Place is great for getting your propane tanks filled or CO2 tank for local bars. The staff is friendly and always some cool tools and gear to check out while you wait. Great hidden gem in Southie

Went here to re-​fill a propane tank for the grill and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Very friendly and helpful, and luckily for me the location is about 3 blocks from home! MUCH better than the sketchy nearby UHAUL place I’ve gone to in the past… wished I knew about Tolman sooner: o)

This place is phenomenal if you need to quickly and cheaply get your propane tank filled. I’ve been going here for about 15 years. It’s so tough to find propane places that actually refill your tank (at least in Boston), but this place refills them for less than $ 17 and it takes only a few minutes. I’ve tried Uhaul and Neponset Car Wash, but both of these places are so overpriced (and Uhaul is just flat out rude). Even BJs charges about $ 18 or $ 19 for a refill if you’re a non-​member. Tolman sells new or used propane tanks, which you can buy if you want to get an extra tank around so that you don’t run out of gas if you’re having a BBQ party. Call me neurotic, but I always like to have a back-​up tank just in case.
The only problem I’ve found with this place is that they have construction hours so they open early and close early. By the time I get out of work, I usually don’t have time to make it over there before closing. Here’s a tip, though: They say they close at 4:30 during the week but I’ve walked in there at past 5pm and they’ve filled my tank for me. I tend to get my tank filled on Saturday morning, because that’s the most convenient time for me, but again you have to wake up early to make it there before them closing at noon. If you call after hours on any day and someone answers, usually you can try and get them to stay and fill up a tank if you tell them you’ll be there within a few minutes… I guess it just depends on who answers the phone.
I didn’t realize that they sold all sorts of gases, but they sell CO2 and helium… just about any gas you could need to throw a killer party. I used them for my friend’s birthday party. We brewed beer, BBQ-​ed and rented a helium tank and blew up about 100 balloons. Amazingly, this place has a balloon shop as well, so we did some fabulous one-​stop shopping with getting everything from propane to balloons and ribbon to gas for the keg. We rented a helium tank for $ 4/​month and paid for the helium and threw a phenomenal party. I couldn’t have asked for a more convenient and cost-​efficient experience.
