John has been doing our personal and small business (sole proprietorship) taxes for many years. We have to file in multiple states and he has been a master at dealing with all the intricacies. When there is an issue he takes the time to go back and provides the details (sometimes getting me to pull up old checks that were paid to an tax agency that seemed to have forgotten that they cashed them) leading to a reasonable result for us.
John and I use an online service (Basecamp) to securely exchange my data, his forms, and records; then he mails me all of the paperwork to sign and submit. They arrive at my home office with detailed instructions. We use GoToMeeting to discuss any questions either of us might have — and we can see the old records, forms, etc. in real time. By having these tools (that I pay for and use widely in my consulting practice) that John is familiar with I save time when I prepare and we review my tax material.
John is up to date technically and that makes him a very efficient accountant /​tax preparation person to work with. Many years ago he recommended AccountingEdge Software for my business record keeping. I can ship him a copy of the AccountingEdge files and he can generate the appropriate reports quickly and work with them — only asking questions when he needs to understand an entry I have made.
