When I attended WKU in the 80s, Smith stadium had only an east side which was little more than concrete and bleachers. Renovation began in 2006. A west side was built with a club level, concessions, and restrooms. The east side was also renovated. Smith Stadium now has a big screen, modern scoreboard and sound system which have come to be expected at sporting venues. The sound system needs to be tweaked as sometimes the referees’ voices are garbled like that of Charlie Brown’s teacher. The volume is more than adequate. The video vignettes of players on the big screen encouraging the crowd to make noise or get fired up are fun. I thought music should have been played less frequently via the sound system because it interfered with the sounds of the game, the cheerleaders, the crowd, and the band. On the other hand, music got the crowd going at certain points in the game. When the Hilltoppers score, celebratory fireworks rocket into the sky on the south side of the stadium. I’m not sure there’s a bad seat in the house, really. From what I could tell, everyone has a good sightline. We were upper deck, first row and had a great view of the field. We also enjoyed the view of the west side of campus. The incline of the stadium seems just about perfect. All in all, watching a game at Smith Stadium is a great experience and one I hope to repeat.(I live 8 hours away.) Unless you are club level, I’d encourage you to sit on the older, east side of the stadium on cool, sunny days. You will have sunshine all day which will mitigate cold air and any chill winds. On those warm Southern days early in the season, choose the west side of the stadium which is shaded. New to WKU? At any game watch for our beloved Big Red, the Hilltopper mascot. Big Red is pure entertainment!
