I go to the 14th st location here now and again… Comfort food is the gig at Salem’s… The service is fast and portions fairly big. Just beware of the grease, you’re going to need lots of napkins! The fish and chips are good filling soul food, but I recommend the tilapia over the bass… Tilapia being more flavorful and flakey. If you crave a full tummy and a happy heart, Salem’s can help!!!

Salem’s is okay — just okay. I am always in search of the best gyro. When I first tried Salem’s a year ago, I thought it was alright. But, I knew there had to be better. There was not much gyro meat in it and barely any sauce(I won’t even call their sauce tzatziki, because it isn’t really.) You know, it’s just fast food. Fast food is always going to be lacking in quality and flavor. Plus, I thought it was kind of expensive, too — for the relatively small gyro I received. Trust me — -if you want the BEST gyro(at least the best I have found in the past 30 years), head on over to the Olympic Café at 6408 Manatee in Bradenton. The owner(s) are Greek and the gyro is amazing! TONS of gyro meat, thinly sliced onions, tomatoes and REAL tzatziki sauce, too, all crammed into a soft pita! Add a side of fries(really good fries) and you have a perfect meal! Support small businesses, not chains!

I used to visit the location on Manatee Ave DELICIOUSFOOD with Flavor! I only order the Philly Cheese Steak with no mushrooms and a side of fries very flavorful the meat is seasoned perfectly but one afternoon I decided to order the same meal from THIS location and the steak meat was BLAND absolutely NO flavor so I had to ask to have it remade and asked the young lady at the counter to please season the meat and she looked at me as if I was speaking a foreign language I received my meal and the meat was heavily seasoned and salty i’ll never come back here again they really do need to train their cooks on how to prop;erly season food you can not just cook food and not season it you will not gather business this way

Our first time here and it was delicious. The grilled fish was cooked just right as was the fried chicken the wife had. They need to work on getting the entire order out at the same time. We will be back.

I ordered the Gyro and the calamari. The gyro is 6.99 sandwich only, the calamari 4.99. The gyro was ok, but not the best by any means! The sandwich was nowhere near as hot as it should be. Some of the onion-tomato type ingredients were room temperature. The meat also was so so warm, and the bread it was rolled in wasn’t warm at all. A good gyro in my opinion is served much warmer than what I got. The calamari? Just fair. deep fried but uninspiring. Typical fast food deep fry quality. The little cup of sauce to dip it in was too small. For the gyro if you wanted a little cup of tzatziki sauce its another 54c incl tax, so I got one. Where I normally eat gyros, which is not in Florida, its free, and much much better tasting. There was quite a wait, esp for the calamari. When leaving I noticed the drive through! Theres no way to say for sure, but its pretty standard when there is a drive through the lobby customers wait a lot longer. That’s how it is with so many other drive throughs. The lobby wasn’t busy, but the drive through was. The size of the gyro was good. Larger than average, but the price was larger than average too.

Visited twice in the same week during a recent vacation. Gyros were flavorful and generously portioned. Could use more sauce to go with large portion. Also had chicken wings that were crispy and smothered in wing sauce(excellent). Loved the combo of Gyros and chicken wings.

We really like their subs and fries. You should join their email club by clicking Deals on their website. Each week they email out a new coupon that is good all week. Last week it was $ 5 for 12″ philly cheese steak or chicken philly.

I love greek food with a passion but at Salem’s, it’s pretty bad. Think of the greasiest burgers and fries you have ever had and multiply that by 10. The Gyro I had was more of a meal of grease with a topping of gyro and fries. The service is bad as well, I stood there for 10 minutes waiting for the entire staff to get done with their break. They didn’t have the curtosy to hang the closed sign up during the break, instead they made me wait and to top it off, I was the only one there at 2am and it would have taken them 5 minutes to serve me, then they could have gone back to their«break.» It’s tempting to go again due to the fact that it’s so cheap and is open until 4am but I really would have to smack myself if I did.

With a recent second meal at Salem’s I feel the need to update my review downward. On this visit I had the Gyro and my wife a sub. The sub was unimpressive and on a blah roll. It was edible but certainly had nothing to recommend it. Actually, I think a 7 – 11 packaged sub is better. My Gyro had plenty of meat but just a small blob of Tzatziki sauce and too little of everything else. It had the appearance that it was thrown together by rushed kitchen help or someone that just didn’t care. The fries I bragged about in my first review went from golden brown with creamy centers to typical fries that had been held a bit too long. Lastly the place doesn’t look or feel clean. Every table needed to have crumbs brushed off from the top & seats. The customer clears their own table and it seems they consider that clean. That along with a couple of flies made for a less than pleasant dining experience. I don’t think we’ll be going back while memory of this last visit lingers. I’m disappointed.

It only took them about a month to raise this building from the Dunkin Donuts tomb that it used to be. Ever since the doors first opened a couple of weeks ago, they have been slammed with happy customers at the drive-thru and dine-in counters. Remember Miami Subs? Well, Salem’s is similar in menu, but better in many ways. They serve chicken wings, gyros, burgers, cheesesteaks, subs, and some damn good cajun fried seafood. The seafood is always tender and the batter has just the right amount of spice. I was very surprised that they have excellent calamari, with just the right cuts of tender squid in a great battered crust. Even served with their own«Calamari Sauce» which resembles chunky sriracha(Asian hot sauce) mixed with ketchup. The Gyros are overstuffed with meat and I always add feta for an additional $ 0.50 because it is totally worth it. My favorite combo is a Gyro with 5 hot wings. You cannot beat having hot wings instead of fries. I have not tried the cakes yet, but they do look good in the case. The shakes were not to my liking.
