Doc Popcorn is usually the reason I make my way to the South Shore Plaza. I always get sweet butter and cheesy cheddar mixed and it is perfection in a bag the best!

Upon recommendation of the rude teenage workers, we ordered two flavors to be mixed in one package. They put on one top of the other… I wanted to eat both together(sweet and salty, yum!) but it wasn’t possible since the flavors were stacked. I asked for another bag so I could mix the two flavors… And they refused! They smugly said it was against store policy??? Ridiculous. Apparently I made a unreasonable request. Worst customer service ever. Do not go here. With so many other delicious options, I will spend my snack money at Auntie Anne’s.

I’ve a sneaking suspicion that white-on-yellow logo will be, ahem, popping up in every usable space around the Hub. Why? Popcorn is a hot snack these days, especially when slapped with a hook: crazy flavors(Corn & Co), transparency and proprietary blends that are healthier than movie theater corn(here), unlimited refills(movie theaters). Move over pita chips(actually, don’t move anywhere). Our obsession with Sundays in Burlington took a detour this weekend, as we scoped out this Braintree alternative en route to Hingham Super Bowl escapades. It’s a kiosk, in a mall, with giant vats of freshly popped and flavored corn. They keep the menu simple: butter, sweet butter, salt & pepper, kettle, two kinds of cheesy, caramel and jalapeño, all with cutesy names. Small bag is $ 4 and change; large is also $ 4 and change, so upsize — 60cals a cup ain’t gonna kill ya. The test of all tests is the Chicago Mix aka Windy City Mix aka cheddar and caramel. Doc’s cheddar is pleasantly salty but without a heavy punch of queso — great for stain-free fingertips, but a big ol’ speed bump in the quest for Cheese/Caramel greatness. The sweet was not overly so, but lacked the tacky bitterness of a rich caramel, instead favoring a glazed snap akin to Corn Pops. Yes, the cereal. It ate like warm, dry cereal. Wouldn’t turn a future bag away and find myself curious about the jalapeño, but in the Great C+C Popcorn Race, the standings remain: Garrett’s for gold, Corn & Co to place, and Doc Popcorn swings third.

I stopped by today during a mall excursion, and was pleasantly surprised. The staff(a guy named Dan was running the place) was very nice. He was talkative, very pleasant, and offered various samples and recommended combinations. I grabbed a bag of the cheesy Cheddar, and it was fantastic. I grabbed a large, which was only $ 5. The bag looked small when I ordered, but Let me assure you that you get your money’s worth. I have been going at this thing for hours and I still have some left. I will be sure to stop by again. I will probably go with a small next time, though. I hope they stay around, that spot over by Sears can’t seem to keep the same place for too long.
